LftL discussion expanded —March 28, 2018

After multiple questions regarding the purpose of Life from the Loam. I have added additional discussion regarding its purpose and how it can help solve some issues that the deck runs into. This can be found under Deck Strategy > Life from the Loam.

Just dropping by to say I love the primer update. It was good before, but now with more writeup and more options for both cEDH and "regular" EDH it truly assists in building one from ground up.

Keep up the good work!

buildingadeck - while you had recommended this, I had been in process of updating the primer with that card added as an option in the meta specfic choices. :)

JohnnyCRO - Thanks! I worked hard to make the primer very general and broad while still providing valuable detailed info. There is a lot of options to build a deck from and due to the reactive nature of the deck, there isn't a correct choice as each local meta and play style will be different.

Hey Cameron, minor question but what purpose does Elves of Deep Shadow serve? It only produces black mana which does not help activate Tasigur's ability. Just curious as I am currently building Tasigur and working out the mana rock/dork situation.

"There is a lot of options to build a deck from and due to the reactive nature of the deck, there isn't a correct choice as each local meta and play style will be different."

The definition of what it takes to build a good control deck, especially in EDH. I'm glad we're on the same page.

If you don't mind me asking, is there a particular reason why you opted to play just black and green cycle lands? My guess is that you want to save up your early blue mana for counterspells so that you can both keep up the cycling engine and counter crucial spells. But I don't want to assume too much.

Also, as I previously mentioned, I'm currently building a Tasigur control from the ground up for a 75%-ish environment. After I'm done, would you mind it if I posted it here for you, and the others that might be interested, to take a quick look? I will have to fine tune it myself, I would just like to hear if I missed something important.

@BolasFucks - I'm obviously not the OP, but in a 3c deck a dork played for that produces just green mana is just ramp, not mana fixing. The fact that one can play a dork means that green is already available. Opening another color while ramping makes it better thatn Elvish mystic and others even with the pain aspect taken into account.

BolasFucks - The big thing this has over Llanowar Elves/Elvish Mystic is that it mana fixes you. It is Ramp and Diversification of mana. Getting a mana source to help you produce more of the same isn't as useful as it is helping you move to other colors when you need it.

JohnnyCRO - The idea behind not running the blue cycling land is based on analyzing its use case. Specifically looking at what mana you would most likely have available when you want to cycle those lands. For interaction, blue mana is our most important. Which means that either we want to conserve it when we cycle lands main phase or we have potentially used it and it is not available when we cycle lands at end step before our turn. Blue is our most valuable mana and we want to put less strain on it when we can.

Hay, have you considered soldevi excavations. I know it's weak to strip mine and the sorts but what about in a meta light on land destruction? Also what's your option on pieces of the puzzle?

Thanks.

Omnomtree - based on the manabase, we'd very rarely have a basic island in play. This means we are sacrificing mana fixing for scry. I am not a fan of that aspect of Excavations in regards to Tasigur.

Can someone please explain the importance of Life from the Loam

One obvious thing is that its dredge keyword fills the graveyard nicely which is obviously important for Tasigur recasting and its own function in here (dumping lands it can bring back if the pilot choses to). But there is additional utility.

Tasigur's ability doesn't sit well with cantrips. Even if the pilot can make it so that they get the card they need, having a practically dead card in the grave isn't nice. Cycle lands on the other hand, can be cycled instant speed to draw cards, which makes them kind of like cantrips, but they can't be forcefully brought back by tasigur's ability.

Now let's evaluate Life from the loam in this aspect; not only can it recycle fetchlands, milled lands, strip mine and what not, it can recycle the deck's cantrips, making it not only a grave recursion card, but draw engine enabler which is needed in here to maintain a strong hand without relying too much on Tasigur's recursion which isn't cheap enough to be used to keep the hand full.

is scepter+reversal is only infinite mana combo for now? is it best one? im know that it is low cost combo but it is not resilent (if someone destroy scepter, we cant return combo, cause reversal is exiled) and need some suport with manarocks. So is it enought ? why you use Phantasmal Image if you not use Palinchron?

And about replacements, im have almost all cards, but Chains of Mephistopheles and Timetwister not in my budget, so if im need replace only this two, that better replacements you can recommend to me?

For the dramatic scepter combo, wouldn't Krosan Restorer work very well with it? Threshold is super easy to hit and with her on board, you wouldn't even need a mana rock to go infinite if you had assembled the scepter combo with colored mana. I understand the CMC cost is a little higher but it doesn't seem massively prohibitive. Sub-threshold she can at least untap your Coffers to give you infinite black mana. Thoughts?

March 23, 2018 12:03 p.m.

simakover - Chains -> Notion Thief. Timetwister -> Memory's Journey/Windfall depending on if you need recursion or card draw more.

Syncharmony - Using a higher cmc creature is not ideal. You are dealing with a higher cost, the requirement of threshold and needing to wait a turn to use the creature. Multiple cheaper, preferably 1 cmc, mana creatures can do this much better. Most of the time that the Dramatic Scepter combo goes off, there is a mix of creatures and mana rocks that are being used for mana generation.

thanks, and why you use Phantasmal Image with pali? and scepter+reversal is enought for mana combo?
