Based off the Commander's Quarters Kambal budget Deck. (https://youtu.be/FTyh7ZMhEMA) This Deck is also inspired by chowabbajack's Obzedat Decklist (https://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/commander-edh/multiplayer-commander-decklists/611582-obzedat-ghost-council-of-valuetown)

"Since I grew tired of the chase

And search, I learned to find;

And since the wind blows in my face,

I sail with every wind."

–Friedrich Nietzsche translated by Walter Kaufmann

This deck is designed to slow the game to a crawl. To create board wide effects that at best punish everyone for casting any kind of spells and at worst make such casts impossible. It's designed to create suffering, but that's alright, because we can feed off such suffering with cards that render effects one sided or beneficial for us. With the help of the Obzedat council itself, we'll sail with every wind as our opponents struggle to find their footing.

"You need some rust; sharpness does not suffice: Else you will seem too young and too precise" Rust

An optimal opening consists of several movements. First is establishing an early denial effect to shutdown early powerplays/ramping from our opponents. Cards like, Blind Obedience , Aura of Silence , Damping Sphere , Tithe Taker , Grand Abolisher , and Eidolon of Rhetoric can strangle the board pretty well but will typically eat removal of some kind by turn 5.

Also we want to begin establishing early tax effects to punish players who get around those previous cards. Kambal, Consul of Allocation , Suture Priest punish players for getting permanents onto the field. Ghostly Prison , and Norn's Annex insulate us from attacks while creatures such as Falkenrath Noble can punish attacks with lifeloss or permanent destruction.

The idea is to establish a proper basis for the midgame.

"I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth!" Aphorism 276

Going into the midgame we want to develop card draw off of Well of Lost Dreams , Bolas's Citadel , Greed , Phyrexian Arena , or Arguel's Blood Fast  . At this point more oppressive stax effects can come into play. Effects such as Winter Orb , Hokori, Dust Drinker , Smokestack , Tangle Wire and Static Orb can create serious locks on the table that we can generally escape from with Smothering Tithe and Cabal Coffers in addition to our manarocks. If we can build up a large mana base in the form of artifacts and nuke the board with Armageddon the advantage will usually be insurmountable for our opponents.

Staying under the radar after such plays is going to be difficult and Obzedat will become public enemy of the table. Many of our opponents creatures and other permanents will now require direct removal. Thankfully Orzhova has been very generous and our color pair offers great spot removal in the form of Mortify , Utter End , Despark , Unmake , Swords to Plowshares , and Revoke Existence . We can also remove the whole smash with Fumigate , Wrath of God , Day of Judgment , Kaya's Wrath , and Merciless Eviction , the best boardwipe in the game.

At this point our commander really shines. Obzedat flourishes in a locked down environment since they can flicker in at our upkeep, ping a target player while gaining us life and then flicker out. Oppoents have to deal with this commander at instant speed on our turn. Even if our effects have drowned the board, Obzedat can still land the killing blow.

Behind all of this as well is a ton of life gain than can be weaponized with Cliffhaven Vampire , Sanguine Bond , Vizkopa Guildmage , and finally with Aetherflux Reservoir .

"What is the seal of Liberation? To no longer be ashamed before oneself." Aphorism 275

Having stalled out the game and weighed down our opponents victory we can either draw into or tutor for one of our wincons.

==Combos== We run two combos in the form of the usual Exquisite Blood and Sanguine Bond combo. With Aetherflux Reservoir on the field we can bounce Leshrac's Sigil to hand and back for free (as long as we have enough life) with K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth for infinite life then blast them with Aetherflux Reservoir .

==Alternate Wincons== We can also dump mana into a huge Debt to the Deathless or Exsanguinate to finish off the table or lean on our planeswalkers Liliana, Dreadhorde General or Sorin Markov who can finish off the table with their abilities.

Finally, we always have the option of grinding everyone down with Obzedat.

Pros

  • As with other Stax decks, this can counter or at least greatly slow otherwise fast storm decks, artifact decks, and big stompy decks among other things
  • Obzedat is a beefy commander that can provide free damage and lifegain at upkeep which has to be countered at instant speed on our turn
  • Playing Aetherflux and Bolas' Citadel is as close as I'll get to unlimited power in this life

Cons

  • This deck involves a lot of triggers that can be easy to miss
  • Understanding how our effects interact with the opponent's board states and the ways their strats can get around them is critical, you have to have an understanding of how your opponent's decks function
  • This deck has no counter magic and few instant speed answers, we should be tapping out every turn as we dig for a wincon on borrowed time from the stax peices

The deck still needs work and there is much room for improvements. Let me know if you have any suggestions/changes/critiques!
