AFR Spoiler Season Recap —July 7, 2021

With all the new cards revealed I thought it would be a good idea to talk about the cards that were relevant for The Ur-Dragon. Considering the set is named Dungeons & DRAGONS, it's fitting that this is the set which has been the most generous to dragons since quite some time, in my opinion. There are 5 cards I think are almost always worth a slot, 3 of which I'm pretty sure will find their way in this deck. And 5 out of 99 for one set is quite a lot I think, especially since they're all legends!
- Tiamat is an obvious choice, I won't even comment why it's a relevant card. I just might not get one because of the prices I'm seeing.
- Iymrith, Desert Doom looks quite good. Like everyone mentioned, a bit of a Dragonlord Ojutai clone but I like this one better since the ceiling is higher. I like her and will personally swap it for Painful Truths (which I'm supposed to swap for Rhystic Study but the price is too high for now). Also plays nicely with Dragon Tempest.
- Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient looks amazing, himself a clone of Savage Ventmaw. If you're playing Aggravated Assault you don't want to make the swap but I know I will because again, the ceiling is higher, and in my particular deck, more safe to play I'm sure.
- Old Gnawbone is very straightforward, and I'm sure I don't have to comment why. However, I'm not interested in running her, for whatever reason, but she's undeniably good.
- Inferno of the Star Mounts is a big, really dumb dragon. I don't think it has a place in The Ur-Dragon, I'm sure you'd rather build around him or have him in your 99. That being said, why not, I can imagine an Ur deck running him

There's alot of talk about Tiamat being the new best dragon commander > The Ur-dragon.

Would you consider changing commanders or putting Tiamat in the deck as part of the 100?

Danwinzz2 So is Tiamat the best commander on power-level alone ? I can get behind that argument. However, I believe seeing a Tiamat in the command zone paints a huge target on your back, much more so than The Ur-Dragon . Personally, swapping The Ur-Dragon for her didn't even cross my mind. Every time she ETB the first time during every game you just pick the same 5 dragons ? She sounds very repetitive as a commander, not nearly as fun as The Ur-Dragon to me. That said, as part of the 100 ? Absolutely. Will it paint a huge target on your back if it ETB ? Absolutely.

Also Narrash, what would you remove from your current decklist to put in Tiamat or Scion of Draco

Danwinzz2 a difficult question but one I should answer before actually buying the card. Rationally speaking there are several candidates. I feel like the prime candidates would be Dragonlord Ojutai , Dragonlord Kolaghan and Dromoka, the Eternal . However, for my personal deck, I'm committed to playing all 10 dragon legends of Tarkir, so my choice would be very different. First one to go is definitely Golos, Tireless Pilgrim . I hear it, it's a great card, mana sink and ramp. But considering the commander, turn 5 is precisely the turn when you should be playing a dragon (6 drop thanks to Eminence, more thanks to ramp). The ramp is nice and we're always looking for more in this deck but the reason you should play Golos, Tireless Pilgrim is for the ability. But the very few times it managed to stay on the battlefield, I just found myself not using it because I'd rather cast something from my hand. Overall, I'm just not a fan of Golos, Tireless Pilgrim in my particular version of the deck. There goes the spot for Scion of Draco . For Tiamat , I'm thinking Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge or Hellkite Tyrant . I played Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge for the sole reason that it offers a turn 2 dragon defender (still playtesting it). Honestly, I just like the design, I think it's a fun little card, but of course the ceiling is quite low. Hellkite Tyrant on the other hand offers quite a higher ceiling. However, on all the games I've played, I never took more than 2 artifacts, mana rock at that, which this late in the game made no difference. I'm sure it must feel incredible to play it against an artifact deck but I don't have one in my meta and having one card being a silver bullet to a specific strategy in commander isn't how I want to play it. The more I think about it the more cutting Eladamri's Call for Tiamat makes some sense. I keep instants low because I don't want to leave a mana source untapped with this deck. It made for a good tutor but the only non-dragon creatures I'd ever want to tutor would be Xenagos, God of Revels and Sylvia Brightspear . Tiamat wouldn't be able to fetch Xenagos, God of Revels but it would serve the tutoring purpose better.

Interesting new dragon revealed today. Green Dragon

Perhaps could have him ETB, and when you play another dragon that does damage spread to different targets like Drakuseth, Maw of Flames or Dragonlord Atarka . Can do 1 damage to different targets and kill them all.
