Thursday Night Modern 7/18/2019 —July 18, 2019

After a lengthy hiatus I'm back on Green Devotion. This is the first time I've been able to play since Modern Horizons came out, so 3-1 was a great way to break back into the format. 21 players tonight, which is a great improvement considering it almost didn't fire a month ago.

Round One: 0-2 L vs Esper Control

I feel like I made the correct decisions but he just had too much removal and both games locked me out with Narset, Parter of Veils + Geier Reach Sanitarium. I feel I'll need more direct answers to planeswalkers to fight control in the current meta.

Sb: 2 Surgical Extraction, 3 Blood Moon, Ruric Thar, the Unbowed, Thrun, the Last Troll. He Pathed Thar, Pushed Birds, Purged Moon, and Edicted Thrun; none of my anti-control threats stuck.

Round Two 2-0 W vs 8Rack

W G1: Big race to the bottom and I squeaked out a win after a mull to 5 with a timely Garruk Wildspeaker ult.

W G2: He didn't present any disruption or removal so I just stomped to a clear win.

Sb: 2 Fracturing Gust, 2 Creeping Corrosion, Ruric Thar, the Unbowed

Round Three 2-1 W vs Abzan Combo

L G1: Despite a fast start from me, he combo'd off quick.

W G2, G3: He couldn't draw his combo pieces fast enough as I played a fast aggro game with more Garruk Wildspeaker ultimates.

Sb: 2 Pyroclasm, 3 Blood Moon, Walking Ballista, 2 Surgical Extraction

Note: Saving Surgical Extraction here for Persist triggers is key.

Round Four 2-0 W vs Mono Black Vampires

W G1, G2: He played some Thoughtseize and Bloodghast but never threatened the board state. Had an insane turn2 of BTE-BTE-Nykthos-Garruk-Hornet Queen.

Sb: Didn't see much of his deck, so I sideboarded nothing.
