After watching Nizzahon Magic's MTG Top 10: WORST Gruul Cards I saw the innocuous Fossil Find ranked at number 1. This struck me as mighty unfair, as it actually has quite a lot of application! This deck is my attempt to abuse it.

The main combo is Runaway Steam-Kin / Birgi, God of Storytelling   + 2 Fossil Finds, allowing you to infinitely cycle them, triggering prowess and damage effects to your heart's content. Outside of this, however, Fossil Find is ruddy convenient. It allows the rapid recasting of cheap spells, allowing you to Lightning Bolt face without repercussions, and grabs back key lost pieces.

The fastest possible win is on turn 2:

1. Mountain, Wild Cantor
2. Mountain, Sacrifice Wild Cantor for {R}, Birgi, God of Storytelling  , Gutshot, Monastery Swiftspear, Fossil Find infinitely, attack for lethal with Monastery Swiftspear.

The other cards in the deck facilitate draw and interaction with the graveyard for quick combo resolution.

This is my first real Modern deck, so I'm bound to miss some stellar cards that'd slot right in. Any advice and feedback is appreciated!

Cards in Deck

• Abbot of Keral Keep keeps the engine ticking, and is a decent Prowess body.

• Birgi, God of Storytelling   is the best combo piece - playing her on turn 2 is always stunning.

• Crash Through is extra draw, and makes sure your Prowess creatures hit through when they need to.

• Fossil Find is the decks’s centrepiece - don’t hesitate to cast it early on if you want one particular card back.

• Grim Lavamancer is a great way of burning through your graveyard, as well as low-key removal and extra face damage.

• Gut Shot is a fantastic all-rounder. Enables Light Up the Stage, and nets you more mana with Birgi, God of Storytelling   and Runaway Steam-Kin.

• Light Up the Stage is the best cheap draw without chucking loads in the graveyard - make sure, if you’re planning to cast this anyway, to play it before your land drop, so you can play a land from it before it’s lost to exile!

• Lightning Bolt - does what it says on the tin. Cast turn one, and follow with a turn two Fossil Find and then recast it!

• Manamorphose nets you extra mana with Birgi, God of Storytelling   and Runaway Steam-Kin, and is very convenient draw.

• March of Reckless Joy lets you draw big on turns with excess mana - will often win you the game in such instances, if you've a Birgi or Steam-Kin.

• Monastery Swiftspear should be played first - all-around great, and activates Light Up the Stage nicely.

• Runaway Steam-Kin isn’t quite as useful as Birgi, God of Storytelling  , but it comes in a turn earlier.

• Wild Cantor is very helpful ramp.

Tournament Results

- Dark Sphere Shepherd’s Bush, 08/03/22, 2W/2L/0D: Was surprised how well this performed; Electrostatic Field was absolutely the star player, am mainboarding in place of Abbot of Keral Keep. Definitely need to look at Grim Lavamancer again, and something to replace Harvest Pyre. Overall, pretty decent!
