Experimental update —Feb. 14, 2018

Out:

JVP,

Winter Orb

In:

Pull from tomorrow

Vedalken Shackles

Winter Orb is pretty mediocre in the current metagame and JVP is often dead to our own cursed totem. This update moves the deck more towards control and further from self nonbos

Very thorough. I personally have a higher CMC because there are certain counterspells that I prefer, and I'm a sucker for Memnarch, but I think this list is easily the most streamlined. In your opinion, how does this deck stack up against Animar? I personally consider it top tier, but I suppose it could be in Tier 1.5 depending on which other decks are at the table.

I can't say I have a lot of experience playing against Animar, but as far as I know it's not a deck that has been relevant in the post-paris mulligan cEDH metagame.

The deck should be fairly easy to disrupt, and out hate pieces such as Cursed Totem, Torpor Orb, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale and Overburden will hurt Animar a lot.

superstepa - first of all thanks for this amazing primer. I got a question, though. I've already talked with Neunviertel but I'd like to hear your opinion too. I want to give Teferi a try and I own all but two cards from your list which are Tabernacle and Workshop. Which should be the first one I purchase? I feel like Workshop helps a lot with explosive openings but my meta is quite heavy on creatures (decks like yisan toolbox, boonweaver karador, meren stax are quite common). On the other hand Workshop is quite cheaper :P. I'll probably get both of them but which one is more crucial for you?

The other thing is the issue of expedition map. Without tabernacle and workshop I feel like it's a free spot. What card you'd put in its place? I was thinking about engulf the shore (because without tabernacle I lack mass removal). What's your opinon on that :)?

In that meta The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale seems like the much better choice.

Engulf the Shore would probably be good enough as a sweeper. I personally really like Vedalken Shackles against general-reliant decks like Yisan because they knock those decks out of the game.

Superstepa I have noticed no mention of Tolaria West. It might be another good uncounterable tutor option.

Or perhaps Stifle to use as a 1 mana stop triggered & activated abilities. I wouldn't know where to make the cuts but something to consider.

Tolaria west isn't great. Expedition map fills the same slot better for tutoring lands because its cost can be split over multiple turns and it's an artifact so you can tutor it out with trinket mage and it activates metalcraft. Tutoring out pact can be relevant, but it's not something I would want to spend 3 mana with UU on. I also wouldn't want it to occupy a land slot because High Tide is very important.

Stifle is spicy but it has the problem of not actually stopping most of the things you want it to stop. A lot of the combos that rely on triggered/activated abilities can often just ignore the effect and win either way. If I really wanted something similar I'd rather play Trickbind or Interdict but those effects are pretty lackluster for 2 mana.

Valid points on both counts

How does the Teferi States deck fair against something like this

It should be a pretty favored matchup. That deck looks a lot like Sidisi, but a bit slower and with more protection.

I think the main strength of sidisi AN is being able to power the win out before other decks develop, not having a tutor in the command zone should give decks like Teferi a bit of breathing time to either develop a lock on the board, or gather enough interaction to interrupt naus when it gets cast.

superstepa What do you think about Manifold Insights? I found it to be meh most of the time and replaced it with Mana Web.

I think it's an alright gas spell, but it's probably the most cuttable spell in the whole deck. If you find that you are playing a lot of long games where you are running low on answers I'd run it. If there is a stax piece or an interaction spell extremely relevant to your metagame, I'd run something else over it

Hey, what are your suggestions regarding the more creature-heavy stax metas? What would you take out for stuff like Pongify, Static Orb, Tangle Wire etc. that I've seen floating around.

neosloth says... #14

You would just take out your least relevant stax piece. If those decks aren't reanimator decks then graveyard hate like Tormod's Crypt can probably be replaced with a pongify, or (if there really are a lot of creature decks) Remove Soul.

Static Orb hurts our deck a fair bit so I wouldn't run it, however Tangle Wire is really good if the decks you play against don't go wide.

Hi superstepa, what do you think aboutSearch for Azcanta  Flip , thank you!!!!

The back side of it is really strong but I don't think this deck can reliably flip it in time. The filter ability on the front side can be relevant but I think it makes the deck commit to the grindy hard control style of play, and I like my cards to be useful regardless of which game plan I choose to follow.

With all that said the card is hard evaluate without playing it, and I think Sigi/Lobster is going to give the card a try in his build. I'm looking forward to hearing his findings

Does timetwister make or break the deck for cEDH? I have majority on paper except timetwister. :/

It does not, you just have to replace Stroke of Genius with Blue Sun's Zenith and the deck functions pretty much the same. It's the card for the last 0.1% optimization
