Second and Third Test —Aug. 22, 2016

Just recently bought Omniscience and Smokestack and my buddy got quite a few cards, with a Blasting Furnace loop. He asked me to not go too hard on the first game so he can figure his stuff out. Played Magister Sphinx and got him to 10 with no blockers but didn't attack so he could do his thing. 3 turns later he got his loop going and we finished. As for the second game, we were playing for quite a while, he got his Blasting furnace loop but thankfully I was able to get Glacial Chasm. I then top decked Omniscience, he was tapped out, played it, then played Tezzeret the Seeker, did his -2 for Winter Orb and he forfeited.

Path to Exile

Swords to Plowshares

I'd add those cards to the list

Yeah, I definitely plan on sticking those in the deck, just have to get my hands on them. Thankfully swords is under $5. Will probably pick them up next week or so.

Karlov of the Ghost Council would be a very nice beater and control tool in this deck, in fact i run a karlov deck that might have a few things you might like in you W/B slots: That which is dead will kill you quickly (Karlov)

I would switch out the guildgates for some of the scry lands, like Temple of Silence

Dark Petition can be a pseudo Demonic Tutor for a much lower cost (if you can I'd get both)

Demonic Collusion can allow you to sculpt you hand to your liking, pitching dead cards to be able to find your bombs

Blind Obedience Can seriously slow down your opponents and well as giving extort

Norn's Annex Will cause any non white player to slowly kill themselves as they try to chip away at your life total

Sun Titan can reccur your pillowfort after an opp destroys it, cycled/destroyed lands, any many others. side note: you can Pitch stuff to Demonic Collusion and the use the titan to get them on the battlefeild

Nullify could switch out for Dissolve

Sorin, Grim Nemesis is a draw engine, can ping off enemy walkers and creatures, and has a very powerful lifetotal based ult

I'd switch out Staff of Nin for Phyrexian Arena

If you can, switch out Scour from Existence for Vindicate

sorry for the long comment, hope any of my suggestions help

That's okay, the more suggestions the better the deck. I kind of like having Staff of Nin because it's a hell of a combo with Humility, but I'll try it out. I've been meaning to pick up Karlov of the Ghost Council, it's just a perfect card with Oloro. As far as the guildgates go, I will have to pick up the scrylands, I've been trying to build up enough hype to order some shocklands but it's a lot of money. What would you recommend I take out for the likes of all the tutors?

Torpor Orb has a bit of negative synnergy with your creatures, and unless you know that it will be impact against your local meta, I'd cut that

from my personal testing Chalice of Life  Flip hardly ever will gain you more than 2 life, if that, and the flip is not that great in a 40 life format.

Negate Nullify and Dispel can all be replaced with less restrictive counters, or anything else really

Learn from the Past and Quest for Ancient Secrets makes it sound like you have a graveyard deck in your group, switch these for the tutors and add a Bojuka Bog, that is, as long as you dont need the instant speed graveyard hate.

other cards that i could see being cut: Well of Lost Dreams, Darksteel Ingot, Pristine Talisman, Fated Retribution, Planar Cleansing, Jace, Memory Adept, Drana's Emissary, Sigiled Starfish, Shorecrasher Elemental

you could also handle running a few less lands, but i wouldn't go below 36-35

additionally, Supreme Verdict would be a good consideration if you feel that you need more board wipes

Torpor Orb is a must in my meta as one of them plays a Karador deck with all of the EtB effects, as well as all of the graveyard shuffles. One of the players is a huge milling fan and that's how he usually gets me when he wins. As far as the Negate, Nullify, and Dispel I definitely need to replace those with different counters, those are just the ones I had laying around at the time of assembly. I definitely will need to replace Jace, Memory Adept as milling isn't my goal in this deck. Planar Cleansing will have to go as I don't want to bomb my own stuff. As far as Pristine Talisman goes, I'd like to keep that in the deck as when I have my commander out, all I have to do is tap it and I get a card. I'll put in Supreme Verdict as a direct replacement for Planar Cleansing. Again, thanks for all of the suggestions.

Will have to replace Fate Forgotten with Revoke Existence, direct upgrade. Plus have to get Anguished Unmaking over Vindicate, a lot cheaper. Necropotence would make for an excellent draw engine, will have to replace Well of Lost Dreams with it. As for Wrath of God I have been wanting to get one to match my Damnation and is an upgrade from Fated Retribution. Thanks for the suggestions.

SeaSevedge, if the graveyard shuffles are defensive, elixir of immortality should be enough if you switch those cards for tutors. not only can they find elixir or a sun titan to recur it, but also any other card in your deck.

August 5, 2016 5:28 p.m.

SeaSevedge says... #10

Would only one shuffle effect be enough? I mean if Sun Titan and Elixir of Immortality get milled, I wouldn't have a way to get them back as I'm not running a lot of recursion.

The way I see it, if you know an opp is playing mill, elixir is the first tutor, granted, you don't draw it naturally. if nothing else, Learn from the Past is very low power in terms of anti-mill tech, Psychic Spiral would be a nice way to turn the tables on a mill player, however.

side note: Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is the best option to counter mill, albeit a bit pricey.

also don't forget about Buried Ruin

August 5, 2016 6:09 p.m.

SeaSevedge says... #13

Oh my god. I'm going to have to put Psychic Spiral in there. It'll definitely replace Learn from the Past. I'll grab a couple more tutors and I should be good then. If I'm still having a lot of troubles with being milled, I'll consider picking up Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. And Buried Ruin will be there for insurance. Thank you!

Drana's Emissary, Cancel, Nullify and Quest for Ancient Secrets are not very good cards. Also, i don't see how this deck profits from land destruction / mana denial in form of Winter Orb and Armageddon. It seems very mana hungry itself and despite having a couple mana producing artifacts, it really needs access to its lands.
Why not run Tezzeret the Seeker , Rhystic Study, Decree of Pain, Exclude, Swan Song, Murderous Cut, Dig Through Time? All of those are really good.
Tezzeret the Seeker is particularly good against mill, since he can repeatedly get Elixir of Immortality from your deck.
As for the Eldrazi titans, they are great against mill, but i think Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre is better here than Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. You already have great card draw engines, but the option to remove a permanent seems attractive, and Ulamog is harder to get rid of.

Yeah, some of the cards I just had laying around and need to find better replacements for. As for the land hate, I'm going to eventually be getting Crucible of Worlds and have put Sun Titan in the deck, just need to update it again. I can almost always get three of the mana rocks, so I think the land hate is a nice addition. And I'm going to have to definitely pick up a Tezzeret the Seeker to replace Jace, Memory Adept. As far as the other cards you mentioned, I have been planning to pick those up as well, especially Swan Song and Rhystic Study.

August 6, 2016 2:26 p.m.

You cannot run Temple of Plenty, as it produces green mana, which is out of your color identity.

LostenVortimer Ah, yes. Don't know why I added Temple of Plenty, it's not the one I ordered. Will correct that, thank you.

Luferreiras, Will pick that up next time I'm at the shop, thank you.

Has Archangel of Thune been mentioned yet? That's my favorite likes-lifegain card. Karlov of the Ghost Council is fun, too.

With all those planeswalkwers, you might like Peacekeeper (works nicely with Sun Titan).

Academy Rector makes Damnation a lot more fun.

You're in the colors for Zur the Enchanter and already have five targets for him (six if you change the starfish to Thassa, God of the Sea).

I'm a fan of Righteous Aura; it makes your lifegain relevant against damage from commanders.

Hinder and Spell Crumple are good counterspells to use against commanders. Void Shatter and Dissipate are nice against other spells.

Emzed says... #20

The tuck rule has been changed a while back, Hinder and Spell Crumple are just Cancel against generals nowadays. Paying 3 mana for a counter with marginal upside doesn't seem like a great plan, i would rather have a really cheap one like Swan Song with a marginal drawback, or a really powerful one like Mystic Confluence that is worth tapping out for.

Aneximines, I kind of only want creatures to be utility rather than use them for swinging. That being said, I think of the ones you mentioned, I'll have to put in Karlov of the Ghost Council to replace Divinity of Pride, Academy Rector to replace Shorecrasher Elemental, Zur the Enchanter to replace Drana's Emissary, and will have to switch out scryfish for Thassa, God of the Sea. And Righteous Aura would be good if our meta played with commander damage, but they don't (part of the reason why I'm building this deck). As for the counterspells, I'll have to put those in to replace the current ones I have like Nullify and Dispel. Thank you for the suggestions.

exsanguinate is super good

August 8, 2016 6:18 p.m.

Night of Souls' Betrayal works really well with Humility.

Phyrexian Arena is a great card, and it is even better in Oloro decks. Necropotence is amazing in a build with more lifegain, but it could still work wonders in your version of Oloro.

Lim-Dul's Vault is a pretty big wall-of-text, but it can give you great card advantage and can even act as a tutor if you need it to.

Karmic Justice makes your opponents think twice about destroying your stuff, and since your deck has very few creatures, it is even better.

These are the big suggestions I would make, since they work in pretty much every style of Oloro deck. My deck is a mix of a lot of different strategies (Pillow Fort, Lifegain, Control), and so feel free to look it over for some other great Oloro cards.

TheMagicalNerd, thank you for the suggestions. I will have to get, well, all of the cards you suggested haha. They all will be an awesome addition in my deck. My mouth is already manically grinning at the thought of Night of Souls' Betrayal and Humility being out.
