This is my first Commander deck ever. I'm trying to get into the format and after getting Rivaz of the Claw for another of my decks, I thought it would be a great commander to start with, especially since who doesn't love Dragons right?
Introduction:
As Rivaz of the Claw traveled the world, he found it lacking. He dreamed of the peerless glory, terror and might of his winged ancestors. The days of reveling in fire and death were long gone, ever since dragonkind almost faced Damnation by the hand of Gods
Long ago, in fear of their growing power, dark wisdom and burning ambition, a group of Gods devised a way to end the Dragon bloodline, in an event known as the Crux of Fate. Only lesser beings like the ones that would later evolve into the Viashino escaped the treacherous extermination that claimed their vastly superior ancestry. This was due to the intervention of another of the Gods, and legend says that he was locked away by his peers in the harshest, most deadly volcanic mountain range in the world for his defiance
One day, while crossing some Sulfurous Springs, Rivaz found a mysterious egg-shaped rock resting in a bubbling pool. As Rivaz examined the curious object, he discovered that it was an actual dormant dragon egg, long encased in the ground. The egg was restored back to a living state by a mere touch. Surprised but very pleased, he took it as a sign that his time had come to bring about the Draconic Age once more. Embracing his fate as the Dragon Prophet, the harbinger of Flame and Shadow, he took the egg and raised the hatchling dilligently
For some years, together with his now full-grown beast, known as Tyrant's Familiar by its countless victims, he honed his dark skills to the fullest while assembling a small but cunning cult of beings that desired the return of their Dragon overlords. Dragonspeaker Shamans descended from the secluded mountains and the infamous Nogi, Draco-Zealot
and his band of Dragonlord's Servants emerged from the fathomless caves
After that, Rivaz and his Familiar released the ancient volcanic God Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded from his fiery prison and through this act caught the attention of the legendary Planeswalker Sarkhan, Fireblood, who scoured the planes of existence for draconic power. Now, Rivaz has the means to fulfill his destiny as the Dragon Prophet, and unleash great beings of primal, merciless and cunning power upon the multiverse once again
Rivaz has the favor of many powerful dragon spirits:
- Ancient Brass Dragon steals slain enemy creatures or reanimates dragons
- Ancient Copper Dragon creates plenty of Treasure
- Atsushi, the Blazing Sky can speed up plays or create more Treasure
- Backdraft Hellkite gives the chance to recast used instants and sorceries
- Balefire Dragon wipes the opposing board on successful hits
- Bladewing the Risen reanimates another Dragon upon entry and has a decent mana sink ability
- Boneyard Scourge can attack and block recklessly because it can reanimate itself
- Cavern-Hoard Dragon takes advantage of enemy artifacts to both reduce its cost and create Treasure
- Dragonlord Kolaghan grants Haste to all my creatures
- Drakuseth, Maw of Flames bombards opposing creatures or players when attacking
- Goldspan Dragon not only creates more Treasure, it doubles its value
- Hellkite Tyrant steals enemy artifacts, like their mana rocks, and provides an alternate win-con
- Junji, the Midnight Sky is a menacing, vindictive dragon that punishes removal
- Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury bypasses Rivaz's reanimation clause with Dash and brings more power
- Kokusho, the Evening Star deploys a Life draining bomb if killed
- Lathliss, Dragon Queen delivers dragon tokens and more mass power ups
- Manaform Hellkite creates disposable attackers whenever I play a non-creature spell
- Scourge of Valkas makes dragons deal increasing damage when they enter the board
- Terror of the Peaks nukes targets whenever any dragon enters the field, and it hurts to remove
- Tyrant's Familiar is Rivaz's faithful and deadly Lieutenant, with instant pressure on the field
- Utvara Hellkite creates an overpowering dragon army
Rivaz has access to great relics and knowledge of the dragons:
- Crucible of Fire is a mass stat boost
- Dragon Tempest gives Haste to the dragons and has a Scourge of Valkas-like effect
- Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots speed up a creature and protect it from interactions
- Roaming Throne counts as a dragon and doubles triggered effects
Rivaz and his cult are well versed in forbidden secrets and rituals to fuel their plans
- Corrupted Conviction, Deadly Dispute and Plumb the Forbidden recycle dying creatures for cards
- Demand Answers and Thrill of Possibility draw cards and set up dragons for reanimation
- Phyrexian Arena provides a steady flow of extra cards
- Entomb and Buried Alive search for dragons to be reanimated by Rivaz
- Diabolic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor are format staple tutor spells
- Sarkhan's Triumph is a special tutor for Dragons
Rivaz needs plenty of resources to summon his dragon masters:
- Arcane Signet, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Dark Ritual and Rite of Flame are staple format ramp
- Dockside Extortionist again relies on enemy non-creature threats to produce Treasure
- Dragonlord's Servant reduces dragon costs by 1
- Dragonspeaker Shaman reduces dragon costs by 2
- Nogi, Draco-Zealot reduces dragon costs by 1 and can turn into a dragon himself
- Orb of Dragonkind ramps and later digs for more dragons
- Ruby Medallion reduces any Red spell cost by 1
- Talisman of Indulgence and Rakdos Signet are staple Rakdos mana rocks
- Urza's Incubator is another 2 mana cost reduction card
Rivaz is an accomplished warlock and uses shadowflame magic to destroy his foes:
- Bedevil destroys a creature, artifact or planeswalker
- Crux of Fate is a secret weapon that delivers the board to the Dragonlords
- Damnation is a classic Black boardwipe with no strings attached
- Deadly Rollick is a great nuke in the format
- Feed the Swarm is one of the very few ways to get rid of enchantments in these colors
- Molten Collapse destroys a creature and/or a cheap artifact or enchantment
- Dreadbore and Terminate are simple but effective removal
Rivaz has many tricks up his sleeve to ensure draconic domination
- Black Market Connections can either create treasure, more "dragons" or draw cards
- Palantir of Orthanc fixes the deck and either draws cards or deals more damage to the enemy
- Phyrexian Reclamation is another way to reclaim lost dragons
- Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded is an indestructible body that gives Haste and can cheat dragons into play
- Sarkhan, Fireblood provides either card advantage or more ramp. Can also summon dragons later on
- Sneak Attack is an iconic cheat-into-play engine
