Throne of Eldraine update —Sept. 22, 2019

-Sylvan Safekeeper
+Ranger-Captain of Eos

No cards from Throne of Eldraine really interested me for this deck. Deafening Silence is definitely good in a stax version of this deck, and Kenrith's Transformation might be playable if your meta has way too many obnoxious creatures (Notion Thief and Linvala mostly), but nothing really seems playable enough for my version of this deck.

And no, I don't want to play Arcane Signet, for the same reason I'm not playing Selesnya Signet or Talisman of Unity- this deck doesn't need 2 mana ramp spells.

I did, however, decide that Ranger-Captain of Eos is much better than I originally thought, and has proven to be better protection most of the time than Sylvan Safekeeper, in addition to being able to find Wirewood Symbiote or Quirion Ranger to draw more cards with Selvala.

I also only now realize that I never posted a Modern Horizons update; sorry about that. If you care, other than Ranger-Captain of Eos, the cards from Modern Horizons put into this deck were Force of Vigor and Prismatic Vista, with Generous Gift and Collector Ouphe being playable in the right metas.

I like the idea of seedtime but rarely have the mana to cast it after something was countered

I was going to mention Mandate of Peace but seen you had added it in your recent deck update. The card is working wonders for me, not only against strong combat decks, but also whenever i want to win i go to combat and cast it ending combat.

May i ask though, why Selvala, Heart of the Wilds isn't in the deck? All you do is put umbral mantle on her, and she goes infinite immediately with just her. I recently took Wirewood Channeler out just for her

Marwyn, the Nurturer already goes infinite alone with Umbral Mantle , but unlike the other Selvala, has other uses in this deck.

Yeah i run both for that reason alone, may i ask what other uses you have found for her? My deck is very different so its enjoyable speaking to other selvala players lol. My meta features ALOT of creature removal/exile so i need as mana infinite mana dorks as possible. In fact my friend had posted a deck tech of my selvala on youtube id appreciate a view/like his channel name is commandergoose

Marwyn can still contribute well to the other infinite mana combos in the deck, unlike other Selvala, because it taps for more mana the more elves you play

... the other selvala taps for more than one mana (= greatest power-1) still can go inf

SP3CTR3_chelts i get what he's saying. The creatures aren't big enough to benefit from the other selvala, so selvala is a one trick pony with Umbral Mantle where marwyn has more uses then just taht

This deck is incredibly brilliant. However... Your main way to win is easily countered by cards such as Underrealm Lich , Omen Machine , Dredge comboed off with Lotleth Troll , and those darn players who run Jace, Wielder of Mysteries / Laboratory Maniac . All of which, I do.

But I guess that's the rule of thumb in EDH. Whatever you do, someone else can counter.

No it isn't. If I'm drawing my entire deck, I can use removal spells to get rid of the permanents you described, so they aren't a problem. Even if somehow there is a permanent I can't deal with, I can always just win through the combat step with Mirror Entity , Leyline of Abundance , or Finale of Devastation . If you haven't played with or against this deck before, you might be surprised by how resilient the combo is while still being compact.

Seraphim7 Not to mention he can use Staff of Domination to draw his entire deck while nobody else draws.

Cool deck, Selvala has been a pet deck of mine for years and one I always go back to. I don't know that it'll ever break that barrier of being on the fringe of the better decks but that's not the end of the world. Curious what you think of Cloudstone Curio in here? I've actually run it for awhile but it never ends up on the field since if I do have a tutor I'm usually looking for something else.

My deck is purposefully less streamlined in order to play with more of a midrange strategy so I've dumped a few of the dorks for heavier cards like ( Alhammarret's Archive Akroma's Memorial and Mana Reflection . I still feel like I've nearly always had a turn 2 Selvala play, and fairly often can ramp into one of those bombs right off the bat.

One recent add I've made that you might want to test with is Ranger-Captain of Eos . Tutoring for Quirion Ranger or Symbiote is great, and then you have that Silence effect rattlesnake on the board. Another card that just over-performs all the time for me is the classic Storm Seeker . In a competitive meta when someone goes Ad Naus at the end step, responding with an instant speed direct damage spell in green gets a great laugh at the table.

Another interaction you might want to play with is Penance or any other similar effect. If you have a way to tap/untap Selvala and you have Penance on the table, you can mill out your opponents and win without giving up priority.

Lastly, since you are referring to a comp meta, any reason you're not running Sylvan Library? It's a slam dunk to draw you three every turn when you're gaining tons of life with Selvala.

Anyway - great deck!

Cloudstone Curio isn't there as a tutor target (although it can be if it wins the game), especially since only one card in the deck can tutor for it ( Enlightened Tutor ), but rather because it has just as many combo applications as Temur Sabertooth , so it's one card that offers many more potential combos.

I was probably going to try Ranger-Captain of Eos soon anyway, so it's good to know that you've had success with it.

While Storm Seeker sounds funny, I can't think of a single scenario in which I would want it, so I don't ever see myself playing it.

Penance seems like too cute of an interaction with Selvala and not nearly enough upside. a) It doesn't let you win without passing priority, because you still need to untap Selvala somehow, and that would require passing priority, and b) if your opponents receive priority, they almost always will have a way to stop you (because they are drawing their entire deck.

I'm not entirely sure why I'm not running Sylvan Library , I guess it just never made it's way into my deck. I'll probably throw it in sometime.

Thanks for the suggestions!

yall need some Shared Summons in your life

September 17, 2019 11:30 a.m.

shadowmage I've been trying it out, but I honestly like Congregation at Dawn better. It turns out 5 mana is a lot.

FroggyTroller the advantage of shared over congregation is that it puts the cards into your hand especially if you don’t have Selvala in play or a way to draw into your deck at the time. Congregation is def a good card also but it doesn’t let you just “go off” like shared summons does where you get the cards and play them out immediately

September 18, 2019 9:34 a.m.

shadowmage I completely agree that Shared Summons is better than Congregation at Dawn when Selvala isn't in play, however, there aren't many scenarios where I would rather tutor than recast Selvala. Also, I've found that Congregation at Dawn often is enough to "go off," as the Mirror Entity + Wirewood Symbiote combo is really easy to assemble.
