Selvala, Explorer Returned cEDH (budget list)

Commander / EDH Combo Competitive GW (Selesnya) Primer

Nathan_of_the_Gilt_leaf

This list is a copy of my Selvala "Twiddlestorm Explorer" cEDH Primer, but built with a smaller budget in mind. The primary version of this deck is about $2100 USD, and this list has been budgeted to under $400 USD.

-Gaea's Cradle
-Savannah
-Prismatic Vista
-Cavern of Souls
-Horizon Canopy
-Reflecting Pool
-Mana Confluence
-Wooded Bastion
-all of the fetches (Windswept Heath, Flooded Strand, Arid Mesa, Marsh Flats, Verdant Catacombs, Wooded Foothills, and Misty Rainforest)
+7 Forest
+6 Plains
+Canopy Vista

None of the lands in this deck are very important to its gameplan, not even Gaea's Cradle. Like with any cEDH deck, a significant portion of the cost comes from the mana base, and a better mana base is ideal, but can almost always be modified to budget restrictions. This is just a starting point; feel free to modify the mana base further depending on your personal preferences.

-Staff of Domination
-Cloudstone Curio
+Sword of the Paruns
+Hyrax Tower Scout

Staff of Domination and Cloudstone Curio are the only combo pieces in this deck that demand a high price. Sword of the Paruns serves a similar purpose to Staff of Domination, basically being an additional (and much more mana intensive) Umbral Mantle. Cloustone Curio doesn't really have a good budget option- it's a very unique effect, but it's also not vital to the deck. Hyrax Tower Scout is another Village Bell-Ringer effect, being able to go infinite with Temur Sabertooth and a creature that can tap for at least 6 mana, making it a fine budget option.

-Mana Crypt
-Mox Diamond
-Chrome Mox
-Carpet of Flowers
+Copperhorn Scout
+Joraga Treespeaker

Just like most cEDH decks, a lot of the cost comes from Mana Crypt, Mox Diamond, and Chrome Mox (I don't even own Mana Crypt or Mox Diamond myself). The biggest downside to cutting these is that it makes it harder to cast Selvala on turn 2, so be prepared to have some slower games. Carpet of Flowers was more expensive than I initially thought, and since it's not even good at every meta, it could be cut for Copperhorn Scout (another way to activate Selvala an additional time each turn) or Joraga Treespeaker.

-Enlightened Tutor
-Worldly Tutor
-Stoneforge Mystic
+Open the Armory
+Steelshaper's Gift
+Congregation at Dawn

The original tutors have gotten fairly expensive, and since the banning of Paradox Engine, Enlightened Tutor is almost always just finding Umbral Mantle. Because of that, it can be budgeted to an Open the Armory. Wordly Tutor can become Congregation at Dawn, which is a little expensive (in terms of mana, not money), but is still a useful tutor, and is especially good at finding the Mirror Entity + Wirewood Symbiote combo. Stoneforge Mystic is a harder cut though. It's important because it allows many creature tutors to become equipment tutors, making Umbral Mantle combos much easier. I understand wanting to cut it due to its $40 price tag, so it can be a Steelshaper's Gift in a pinch. Keep in mind though that Stoneforge Mystic should be among the first upgrades to make.

-Sylvan Library
-Ranger-Captain of Eos
+Uba Mask
+Shamanic Revelation
+Eternal Witness
+Path to Exile
+Krosan Grip

Sylvan Library and Ranger-Captain of Eos were two more expensive cards that I felt could be cut for a smaller budget. Shamanic Revelation and Eternal Witness help make this list a little more consistent, and Uba Mask is another stax piece that helps break parity with Selvala (I'm even considering this for the non-budget list). I've also added Path to Exile and Krosan Grip as additional removal spells, but consider these to be flex slots that could really be any other removal spell you prefer, or really anything else you think you would rather play.

Updates Add

-Mana Confluence
-Wooded Bastion
-Sakura-Tribe Scout
-Mandate of Peace
-Lotus Petal
-Ranger-Captain of Eos
+Aven Mindcensor
+Deafening Silence
+Rest in Peace
+Uba Mask
+Kenrith's Transformation
+Hyrax Tower Scout

Most of the cards added to this list in this update are just newer additions from the primary list that hadn't been added into this one (Aven Mindcensor, Rest in Peace, Deafening Silence, and Kenrith's Transformation). Because of recent price changes, I've cut Mana Confluence, Wooded Bastion, and Ranger-Captain of Eos. Lotus Petal was a little expensive to begin with but also doesn't really do much for this deck, so I also cut that from the budget list. Finally, I added Hyrax Tower Scout as another combo piece and Uba Mask as another stax piece.
