C19 Updates and Primer Updated —Aug. 12, 2019

First, the list updates:
Out:
- Dryad Arbor
- Song of the Dryads
- Might of Old Krosa
- Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip
In:
- Homeward Path
- Primal Command
- Scale Up
- Voice of Many

Dryad Arbor is on the lackluster side when drawn in the opener, though it has gotten better with the mulligan rule changes, since you can bottom it on your second mull. You can run it if you want to - it still turns Green Sun's Zenith into an extra turn 1 ramp option. Homeward Path is coming in its place to respect the general increase in the presence of Gilded Drake and Legacy's Allure. Don't forget that you can also go for one of the backup big mana producers as well if Selvala gets stolen.

Song of the Dryads feels just a bit too slow for what it is. Notable comparison is Somberwald Stag, but the tutorability of Stag helps save it. Primal Command is coming back in as a backup loop outlet/removal spell/tutor.

Might of Old Krosa and Scale Up are somewhat interchangeable, but I've felt that Scale Up is slightly better since it let's you utilize the sac-draw spells more effectively (Momentous Fall, Life's Legacy, Greater Good). This is really a personal preference decision, and you can run both as well if you like being higher on pump spells.

With the banning of Paradox Engine, Duskwatch Recruiter has lost a bit more of its niche. While it can still serve as a tutorable outlet, usually fetching Eternal Witness or Woodland Bellower for Fierce Empath for Regal Force is sufficient. Voice of Many is coming in its place, kind of as something worth testing. I've liked Harmonize well enough, and this is pretty close between its EtB effect and possibly triggering Selvala's EtB. Mid combo, it's likely to be a draw three. If you don't like this card, there are a ton of options in the Maybeboard to choose from.

The primer itself has had a long overdue update, with updated win loops, a new play line for Shared Summons, and some minor touchups around the document. The budget list linked at the top of the primer has also been updated.

Would it be worth adding Instill Energy type enchantments into the deck if we were replacing Engine with Curio?

Yes those are fine. That’s what we were running before together with cloudstone.

Titus78 not a fan of lotus cobra, ballista. I’d try to add natural order and eldritch evolution if you can afford them. Cloudstone was cut to make space. The deck can run more combo pieces but I generally find adding more doesn’t help or hurt much since the core of the deck is fattie -> draw spell. I like umbral and staff since they basically just win on the spot.

asm Why not ballista?

You can run ballista if you want. I'm not a fan because the deck already has enough wincons, and ballista is on the weakside for removal (very expensive to kill anything above 2 toughness) while also not being able to kill linvala.

Hello. I finally finished building this list. I have a mana crypt, but it is a card I believe to be volatile and would like to sell it. What would you suggest as the best replacement? I was thinking Elvish Spirit Guide. Thoughts? Thank you.

Is memory jar not viable?

Hi, wanted to ask if Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is viable in the deck, as I remember seeing it in Slowvala decklists. Maybe as replacement for Ghalta? Also, is Aluren maindeckable, as I almost always find Selvala getting countered/removed and casting the commander again is difficult.

Another thing is, I have seen the cEDH decklist database. Yisan is listed on the main page, but Selvala is on the Fringe decklist. Why is that so? Granted, both have different playstyles...but why is Selvala still Fringe in your opinion?

Thanks.

Edit: Ghalta, Primal Hunger is good and worth it in maindeck, found out after much playtesting. Apologies for my ignorance in earlier post.

I am running Homeward Path in place of Dryad Arbor in view of much Gilded Drake effects in my meta, still deciding if I should keep Dryad and take out a basic forest instead for Homeward Path

Would you mind posting an updated wincon guide :) personally I've kept concordant crossroads in for the hasty kills. Are you just blowing up the board then passing to their empty board? Is there a plan b to play though hate with this method?

lynden no worries, i was skeptical of ghalta for a while but its been pretty nice midcombo. Homeward path is a fine swap for dryad arbor. My general plan for getting selvala stolen is to tutor out priest of titania or karametra’s acolyte and going off with either of those.

AztekSnowman yea it’s something I should do. The primary wincon in this list is finale of devastation for very large X, which functions similarly to crossroads by giving you very large hasty board. Secondary is beast within loops to blow up the board and pass with infinite beasts.

How about Scroll Rack in place of Sensei's Divining Top ? Scroll costs 1 more but its activation allows us to see more cards with the shuffle effect. Wouldn't it be better with the fetchlands?

Thanks!

I used to run rack, but I personally like top better. I find it to fit into the curve better if you need it for selection precombo, but you are welcome to run rack as well.
