Plot Twist! —April 11, 2014

I've changed my mind after seeing Pheres-Band Warchief We are now in Centaur town.

I'm currently deciding between running Experiment One or Elvish Mystic. I really like the smoothness that Elvish Mystic gives to my curve, but I understand how good EO is in an aggro deck like this. Thoughts?

Hmmmm after more play testing I think what I said was quite wrong. Just do what ya do man.

RedSoxFanKy: lol well you've corrected most of your comments thus far so I have little to say, but I will say that this deck runs SUPER smoothly at the moment and I would have a hard time changing anything about it apart from sideboard options. Even adding Kruphix (should he be applicable) is going to be hard for me haha. But yeah, I've found that even without a plethora of super early threats I can still be just as aggressive as I must be against most decks. I'm sure my matchup against control isn't very amazing, but honestly I've just given up on making a deck that is good against control in these colors. It'll work sometimes and it won't others. And that's how control matches will be for me until rotation lol.

psones1: Thank you!

If your match-up vs control isn't great then you're doing something wrong.

aggro > control

Storm Crow > all

The only reason my matchup may not be incredible against control is that I'm a bit more "midrange" or slower than aggro decks that are typically good against control. If I had a playset of Experiment One in here, for example, I'd feel much safer than I currently do.

Or a playset of Storm Crow . Control can't deal with a 20 turn clock that stupid Elspeth, Sun's Champion tokens can't block.

On a serious note, I was playtesting this deck and I always had something I would rather play than Courser of Kruphix in my hand. It got to the point where in multiple games I had one card in hand left and it was Courser of Kruphix and it wouldn't help me at all. I don't know what to replace it with but it was just really disappointing. I also was often not able to cast Prime Speaker Zegana and when I was it was "only" drawing 3 or 4 cards. Just something to think about.

Having 4 Courser of Kruphix is probably 1 or 2 too many for this deck, I agree. Possible replacements so far include Scavenging Ooze , Nylea's Disciple , and Arbor Colossus for now. Though I do really like having courser in here for several reasons. First, it is one of the best creatures for evolving Shambleshark . Second, it helps to sift through my deck so that I don't flood out. And third, it's amazing against aggro. Really amazing. I'm going to try going to 2-3 and replacing those removed with Nylea's Disciple . I really like that card -- even if it isn't a game winner.

I'm wondering why you've had issues with Zegana. I typically don't have a lot of trouble getting her out if I have a Courser of Kruphix to help make my land drops. And Nykthos helps me a bunch too. Also, I would gladly play a 6-drop 4/4 that drew four cards. Honestly, while I could be drawing 5-6 cards with this deck using her, I'm perfectly fine with putting another threat on the board and having it restock my hand a small amount.

I'd go Scooze over Nylea's Disciple because in a lot of match-ups in the current standard (MBD, Control, G/R Monsters) the lifegain is irrelevant because they are either going to grind the game to a halt and have as much time as they need to kill you or their creatures are bigger than yours. And your only 2 drop creature is Shambleshark and you could really use another one, and Scooze evolves the Fish Crab the first time. And against control and MBD Scooze can make use of your dead creatures while giving you an efficient beater. While randomly hosing dredge as well.

I respect the choice of scooze for all of those various reasons. I may go with one of those and one Mistcutter Hydra . I just did some testing with a single one main board (the hydra) and my lord did it do amazing things. It really doesn't matter if it can be countered or if they have blue or whatever. It's just a Fireball that no one expects in Game 1. I love it.

I'll need to do testing with scooze to see if he is better as a one-of in the main or if it's just better to have the second hydra there.

What makes it even better is that it can't be countered and gets past those annoying blue creatures/blue removal. Pro Detention Sphere is pretty nice too. I think that's a smart choice.

I feel like my deck here is so tempo-dependent that even having a single one in the main can threaten death at any point and very early. I love how it has haste and I really wish there were more hasty green guys in standard. Shambleshark , and Boon Satyr sort of emulate haste in their own ways, but nothing beats the times when your opponent does what they can for their turn and you EoT rift their blocker into a 6/6 hydra for a blowout victory. it's beautiful.
