Maybeboard

Blue makes a very small appearance in the very effective Modern Izzet Prowess lists, so I'm reviving my ancient Standard Gruul version with Modern tech. Other versions of modern Gruul "Prowess" have already seen multiple top 8's, but the old standard version was pretty intimidating even without Dreadhorde Arcanist.

Replacing blue with green gives us access to the modern Infect package and lots of other fun things to try. Atarka's Command was an absolute powerhouse in the old standard version of this deck, adding up to 7 damage to 2 prowess creatures and scaling very well, while supplying mainboard versatility. Sprite Dragon and Stormwing Entity are replaced by Fire Urchin and Dreadhorde Arcanist, trading flying for trample and card advantage. Dreadhorde Arcanist can replay Atarka's Command or Become Immense in the same turn, adding massive power to the board. Other options include Prey's Vengeance, Rancor, Viridescent Wisps, Blossoming Defense or even Wild Defiance, which I'll be testing for both competitive and casual play. Utopia Sprawl might get tested as well.

The gameplan stays the same, prowess beatdown that can go lethal as early as turn 3. Since flying is nullified vs flying anyways, trample will be the evasion of choice, and first strike will also make an appearance in Coordinated Assault. We'll see how it goes...

Some gameplay tips for those unfamiliar:

  • Getting 2 creatures on the board first is usually preferable to dumping spells on your 1st creature.
  • Hold on to most instants until they've declared blockers, then unleash furious surprise hellfire.
  • Count the damage before you attack, lethal might be easier/harder than you think.
  • If you're out of gas, attacking with untapped land and cards in hand is still very intimidating.
  • Give Become Immense to Dreadhorde Arcanist, and he's big enough to recast it on another creature.
  • Dreadhorde Arcanist can also replay an Atarka's Command for devastating effects.
  • Soul-Scar Mage's wither effect is very important against big aggro like Tron.

I'm very interested in this community's always creative suggestions, both for competitive refinement and for zany casual possibilities. Gruul combat tricks are my absolute favorite, help me make it great again!
