Casual Frontier Tournament —Jan. 28, 2017

Today was a learning experience about the format.

My deck went 3-0 (despite substituting Walking Ballistas with Scrounging Bandars and Managorger Hydras

My victories were likely based on good draws and unprepared opponents, but I do have hope for the future of this deck!

Round 1: 2-0 vs. B/G Eldrazi Cryptolith Rites.

Round 2: 2-1 vs. Red Burn

Round 3: 2-1 vs. Abzan midrange

I like the way you made this build! I just notice that you don't have Scrounging Bandar. My list does not use lead by example, but rather uses Bandar to spread counters, trigger revolt, in order to play frontier's Goyf, Greenwheel Liberator. Also splashes white in addition to black for Oath of Ajani, Just throwing some ideas around. Also, removal-wise, I run 2x Fatal Push and 2x Grasp of Darkness As my deck wants affordable removal with my 2 mana curve. Just some maybe helpful suggestions! Regards to Hardened Scales Return!!

PureIce22 Thank you so much! It's funny you should mention Scrounging Bandar. I actually just cut a playset after doing some testing. I LOVE the card, and it does interact quite well with Hangarback Walker and others. My problem with it was that it...didn't do much right when it hit. I'm concerned that Frontier may be a more interactive format, and so having the equivalent of a 2-mana vanilla 2/2 or 3/3 in my deck wasn't as appealing. He's definitely still an option. Also, as strong as Greenwheel Liberator may end up being, she's STILL just a vanilla creature. I'm a sucker for grindy decks! =D

Thanks for the removal options. I'm just bad about putting removal in my decks in general, but it's good to have more ideas!

My build: Frontier Scales is Busted. I am bonkers over Blossoming Defense in this deck because not letting Managorger die, or Snake, or whatever your best thing is, just wins the game so often.

If you add white, Abzan Falconer is the card you want, especially against decks like Rally. I would like Greenwheel Liberator only if there were a good way to trigger revolt, but the deck really doesn't aim to remove its own things much.

I probably should find a spot for Rishkar. The mana help isn't needed (though Ballista won't object to using it), but 2 counters on 2 things is great.

jubale Thank you for the advice! I do want to give Blossoming Defense a whirl.

I may try adding white some time, however I just am too used to my speed-via-mana-consistency plan. Also, I am jealous of you being able to fit Managorger Hydra into your build! I love him, but he doesn't quite interact as well in this build. Maybe in another version.

I agree white is not wanted. Maybe you can rig a fetchland system that lets you get white without slowing down the mana too much. (GW and GR and RB fetches maybe, but I won't.)

In all honesty, Managorger is the single best card here. I would always go 4 Scales, 4 Snake, 4 Managorger, 20 land, and THEN figure out the other 28 cards. If Gorger lives, the game is won. Only Crackling Doom is a serious obstacle.

jubale very good point. I wasn't sure what the removal is like in Frontier, but maybe I'll see if I can fit him in. Thanks!
