This is my take on a Varolz Scavenger deck. Its been through a lot of iterations over the years and has gone from one of my weakest to one of my strongest decks.

The deck works through using low costed, high-power creatures that Varolz can use for fuel. The only caveat is that they need to be in the grave first. To accomplish this the deck is loaded with filter cards such as Satyr Wayfinder and Kruphix's Insight to send cards directly into the grave from the top of the library. Creatures can also be tutored into the grave with Buried Alive and Jarad's Orders . If a scavenge-creature is drawn, cards like Mind Rake and Putrid Imp can solve that.

There are 11 creatures dedicated to scavenging in this deck for their large powers in relation to their low costs . The trade-off for this value is that the cards have inherently bad stats or ridiculous downsides . The best cards for scavenging are Death's Shadow and Phyrexian Dreadnought because they have HUGE powers for only one mana a piece. They also go straight to the graveyard upon hitting the field so no discard is needed if they are drawn.

Cards like Treasured Find and Noxious Revival can return important cards from your graveyard that are incidentally milled. Riftsweeper is unique as it can return cards that have been scavenged back to your hand. My personal favorite card is Borderland Explorer as it grabs lands to fix mana, allows you to discard scavengers, and has high power so he can used post-mortem.

+1/+1 counters are a big theme in the deck through scavenge's mechanic, so cards such as Solidarity of Heroes and Hazardous Conditions provide incredible utility at relatively low costs. Kalonian Hydra is AMAZING as it provides a Solidarity of Heroes effect EACH turn! Increasing Savagery just puts counters on a creature for a not-so-cheap cost, but it does have flashback so it can still be used if it is milled. Death's Presence and Vastwood Hydra allow for counters to stick around even if the host is killed, however Vastwood only affects itself so it is a candidate to be scavenged onto. Corpsejack Menace and Hardened Scales allow for scavenged creatures to give even more value, and combo extremely well with Death's Presence and Varolz's ability to sack other creatures in order to move counters around and increase their numbers each time.

One of my favorite combo pieces is Torpor Orb to allow double value from scavenge-creatures so they can function as both creatures and fuel. It also hurts opponents as well as yourself with some cards, so play it responsibly. Another one is Ulvenwald Tracker for constant removal of most creatures on the field each turn for only 2 mana and one large creature (which is extremely easy to get in this deck).

This is a Voltron deck because of Varolz's anility to get HUGE fast. Some useful equipments that help him do his job more easily are Swiftfoot Boots , Darksteel Plate , Horned Helm , Loxodon Warhammer , and my personal favorite, Trepanation Blade (not because it is inherently amazing, but because it is so fun and evil). While Varolz is the creature that you want to scavenge onto 90% of the time because of commander damage, there are some other cards that are also included for extra value. These include Vastwood Hydra / Kalonian Hydra (mentioned above), Syr Faren, the Hengehammer (beacause he shares his power), Lotleth Troll (it's similar to Varolz ), and Spinebiter (because infect is fun and dumb).

All in all, this deck has changed a LOT since I first adapted it from Tiny Leaders after the format died, and I am finally proud of it. It is fast and effective, and loads of fun.
