Instant (2)

Creature (1)

Lately it seems I’ve had great luck crafting niche and extremely inexpensive decks, and I’m happy to present another in the same theme. Simple in execution and very easy on the wallet, this is something you can have a lot of fun playing between more serious matches. I hope you enjoy playing this as much as I did building it.

A turbo budget build, we save significant amounts of money by eschewing a costly mana base in favor of going back to basics. Simple Islands and Mountains here, with a play set of Evolving Wilds for good measure.

If you hadn’t noticed already, the inverse side of Spikefield Hazard   produces mana so we run a few for its versatility.

Thomas is hungry. Percy has become hypoglycemic. Gordon craves flesh. Let’s take all this coal just sitting in our hand in the form of Instants and Sorceries and start shoveling it into the graveyard, feeding our engines of destruction.

Lightning Bolt and Vapor Snag remove potential threats and cast for a single mana, perfect for our goals. When not in need of an additional land, Spikefield Hazard   is another one pip pop that can help finish off a 4 toughness creature in tandem with Lightning Bolt.

Izzet Charm and Cathartic Pyre both offer multiple choice selections, none of which we can go wrong in choosing. Gauge the situation and tuck these away in our graveyard as fuel for our engines.

Spell Pierce and Lazotep Plating are used in more specific applications, protecting our creatures in preparation for or in response to anything which may threaten them. Spell Pierce is singled out here as the M.V.C., as it can be held in reserve ready to be cast at a moment’s notice to counter anything targeting our graveyard. It is imperative spells like Relic of Progenitus or Nihil Spellbomb etc do not resolve, as that would seriously undermine our main strategy. Alas, Bojuka Bog will not be stopped by Spell Pierce but that’s to be expected.

Thrill of Possibility and Cathartic Reunion keep our momentum moving forward, filling our hand when it runs low. As long as we’re dumping an Instant or a Sorcery, the typical downside to these sorts of cards is turned into a positive.

Between the expected use cases of protection and removal, the replenishment of our hand through draw power, and the general low cost of the preceding cards, we can expect to rapidly sling numerous spells in quick succession. Let’s load up our graveyard while the fear mounts inside the heart of our beleaguered opponent.

Each of our 3 creatures has a variable Power rating, equal to the number of Instants and Sorceries housed within our graveyard. The more spells we dump into it, the stronger our creatures become. A bit of built in evasion in the form of Flying helps them stick around a bit longer, and that coupled with Trample will help ensure decisive damage is pushed through (for two out of three creatures, at least).

Just keep casting spells, filtering as many cards as possible into the graveyard, then attack with creatures more powerful than a speeding locomotive. That’s really all there is to it!

•Cast our three different, unique, identical creatures as often as possible.

•Keep the table nuisance free with fire-and-forget-it spells like Lightning Bolt and Vapor Snag. Counter that which cannot be bounced or broiled.

•Burn through our library using ‘draw card; discard card’ spells, all the while shoveling coal in the form of Instants and Sorceries into the boiler that is our graveyard.

•Protect our creatures with Lazotep Plating, then attack with massively pumped up locomotives for lethal damage.

Sometimes the train will stop after the first game, and some cards will disembark while others will board. It’s Mr. Conductor’s job—yes you, Ringo—to collect the tickets.

•A couple instances of Pithing Needle ensure that our opponent’s spicier plays don’t derail us.

Mana Leak is here because it’s easier to cast than Counterspell and covers a wider range of potential targets than Spell Pierce, should we find it necessary to switch countermagic after the first game.

Tormod's Crypt as some graveyard insurance of our own.

Apostle's Blessing is a great old standby for when you have a few key pieces you need extra protection for.

Raze the Effigy is a great card for a format glutted with Treasure Tokens and other miscellaneous artifacts, and could potentially also be used to buff one of our attacking trains.

”Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?”
