If r/TrebuchetMemes played EDH

This is a mid-budget Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph Battlecruiser deck focused on "tap: deal 1 damage to each opponent" creatures. AKA, "Trebuchets" (e.g. Brimstone Trebuchet, Lobber Crew, etc).

We use Ghyrson commander over Torbran, Thane of Red Fell mainly because the UR color identity allows us to generate extra value and damage. For example: untappers, Curiosity effects, commander-cloners, Sigil of Sleep, etc.

Also sometimes we get to go infinite with Niv-Mizzet :)

For the ultra-budget edition, click here.

Example turns:

With Vizier of Sands and Swiftfoot Boots in play, I cast a Trebuchet. I pay 1 to equip Swiftfoot Boots. I pay U to cast Curiosity on it.

(Opponents groan)

I tap the Trebuchet, use Vizier to untap it, tap it again to deal 2 damage to each opponent and draw 6 cards.

Late game I untap with two Trebuchets, a decent amount of mana, and Dramatic Reversal in hand. I recast Ghyrson Starn.

At an opportune moment, all at instant speed, I activate both Trbuchets and then cast dramatic Rebersal. I reactivate both Trebuchets. Ghyrson triggers on each activation, for a total of (1+2)*4=12 damage per person

Late game, with Impact Tremors and a single Trebuchet in play, I cast Ghyrson. He enters, opponents take 1+2=3. I cast Spark Double, cloning Ghyrson. Impact Tremors deals 1+2+2=5 more to each player. I tap the Trebuchet, dealing another 5 to each player (13 total this turn per person).

Total list of "Trebuchets" as of 2022 (please comment if I missed one!):

Trebuchets:

Semi-Trebuchets:

(honorable mention to both Flame Fusillade and the Niv-Mizzets, which while single-target often cause many, many, many activations)

Note that I expect that Wizards will keep printing new Trebuchets, given their recent fondness for the effect. As such, this deck should continue to become more and more consistent over time as I swap them in.

That said, we've already hit a critical mass, especially once you get creative with tutors:

Here's a list of broad strategies you can expand on:

  • Mass Ghyrson: Helm of the Host, Vesuvan Diplomacy
  • Hasty Trebuchets: Urabrask the Hidden, Fervor
  • More untappers / ability doublers
    • Many of these will trivially go infinite (we can already do so as is, but these make it significantly easier)
  • Big mana rocks (works great with untappers)
  • Tezzeret the Seeker for tutoring and additional shenanigans. This is especially fun if you immediately snag Rings of Brighthearth and manage to protect him for a turn:
    • add artifact lands / moxes for 'pay two mana: double ramp' each turn
    • add Mana Vault and Voltaic Key to effectively ramp 6 (using brighthearth to double untap)
    • add Expedition Map + optionally Welding Jar (to protect Rings of Brighthearth), along with Magosi, the Waterveil + Deserted Temple, for a stealthy + durable infinite-turn combo. (Or just Uraztron / Cloudposts if you're feeling slightly less Spikey.)
    • add Codex Shredder to loop Tezzeret (and, with e.g. Mana Vault, optionally the shreddder too) back to hand. Then turn 7 recast Tezzeret and immediately tutor out a game winning combo (e.g. basalt monolith / sensei's top as listed above, which gives infinite mana and card draw with Brighthearth out).
