This is a work in progress and my attempt to do a Renata EDH deck. This uncommon demigod has some characteristics that can make her a good leader (although much worse than other top-tier monogreen commanders like Yisan or Marwyn).

Renata has three characteristics that we can highlight and plan some strategies.

  • Renata is an enchantment. Green is the best color for enchantress permanents (enchantress is a "type" of card that benefits the player for casting enchantments or having enchantments on the battlefield). So I use an enchantress shell with cards like Argothian Enchantress and Enchantress's Presence .

  • Renata's power is based on our devotion to green. This deck tries to use permanents instead of instants an sorceries for some effects, like Omen of the Hunt instead of Kodama's Reach . Enchantments are cards that aren't too easy to remove (only green and white can do this with some efficiency and players often use artifact removal instead of enchantment removal in Commander), so our enchantments draws cards with the enchantment shell and generate devotion for Renata's power. Some cards will take benefit from this like Greater Good and Selvala, Heart of the Wilds .

  • All of our creatures enter the battlefield with an additional +1/+1 counter on them when Renata is on the battlefield. This and any sacrifice outlet that sacrifices creatures for zero mana makes an infinite combo with Persist creatures like Aerie Ouphes and Woodfall Primus , the only creatures that have Persist in green. Other creatures play Renata's role in this deck, like Melira, Sylvok Outcast and Metallic Mimic .

Deckbuilding decisions

This deck doesn't use many mana dorks in form of creatures Llanowar Elves or Elvish Mystic . Instead, this deck prioritizes Auras to enchant lands for generating more mana when tapped for mana. I've chosen this approach because of the enchantress shell of the deck and because enchantments are harder to remove (and welp, I don't have Gaea's Cradle). For generating even more mana with these lands, I've included creatures that untaps lands like Voyaging Satyr and Arbor Elf . The enchantments that fit these criteria are:

We can separate the cards of this deck in some groups:

  • Persist creature + counter + Rancor + enchantress + Phyrexian Altar : Sacrifice a creature with Rancor to generate green. Rancor will return to our hand and the creature with Persist will come back. Cast Rancor and draw a card from the enchantress. Repeat. Use this loop to grab other sacrifice outlet that wins the game like Altar of Dementia or Blasting Station .

  • Persist creature + counter provider or remover + Altar of Dementia (to deck out opponents) or Blasting Station to ping opponents.

  • With Cloudstone Curio and an enchantress on the battlefield, we can cast enchantments, draw cards, bounce enchantments on the field back to our hand, recast them... drawing a lot of cards in the process.

  • Ground Seal is a graveyard hate that helps us against reanimation strategies. Even though we can't target cards in graveyards, this card can help us protecting our combo from graveyard hate. When a creature with Persist hits the graveyard, the Persist ability will trigger, but before resolving, our opponents can exile the creature and it won't reanimate. Ground Seal helps us preventing that. Finally, it is an enchantment and draws a card when enters the battlefield, so using it won't go against the enchantress theme of this deck.

  • Despite being a monogreen deck, this deck has fetch lands. We can fetch a land to filter the deck, reducing the number of lands inside of it, increasing the chance of drawing nonland cards, and we can use the fetch effect to shuffle our library when Sensei's Divining Top reveals bad cards on top of the library and we are looking for better options.

  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx can become a Forest with Nylea's Presence or Dryad of the Ilysian Grove . If Nykthos become a forest, we can untap it with Arbor Elf .

  • Courser of Kruphix is an enchantment, fitting the enchantress theme of this deck, but with it we can also filter our deck playing lands from the top of our library. Oracle of Mul Daya , despite not being an enchantment, fits a similar role as a filter.

  • Destiny Spinner acts as an anti-counter creature. I think that its activated ability is kinda useless.

  • Scavenging Ooze is our graveyard hate piece. It is a creature, so we can tutor for it with our tutors.

  • We have few cards to deal with permanents in general, mainly creatures. Beast Within and Song of the Dryads are spot removals that deal with creatures, Reclamation Sage and Force of Vigor with enchantments and artifacts. We have only two boardwipes: All Is Dust for non-colorless permanents and Oblivion Stone for all nonland permanents. We have options to get them back from our graveyard in a pinch with Regrowth and Eternal Witness .

  • To protect our board from boardwipes, we only have Heroic Intervention , a great green card for this task.

  • Mana Bloom is inside the deck because we can cast it every turn, triggering our enchantress. In rare situations, we can use it as a ramp piece.

  • Exploration plays well with Courser of Kruphix or Oracle of Mul Daya , even more when combined with Sensei's Divining Top , fetches, Sylvan Library and Mirri's Guile .

  • Rancor is a recurrable enchantment and we can use it to hit hard with Renata if our devotion is sufficiently high.

  • Our tutors can only get creatures (and in Crop Rotation case, lands). So, we priorite essential tasks on EDH games (graveyard hate, removals, etc) inside creatures (e.g. Reclamation Sage to deal with artifacts and enchantments, Scavenging Ooze to exile cards from graveyards). When we need creatures to combo, we can use tutors to get them.
