Rashmi, Eternities Crafter: Experimental Elves

Commander / EDH Combo Elves GU (Simic)

Forkbeard

Please note that I've decided to retire this deck - I'm going to keep the deck here for posterity but won't be updating this list.

A classic Simic elfball suite that is greatly enhanced by Rashmi, their new exotic queen of value. In order to maximise Rashmi's glorious cascade-lite, we want to do a couple of things:

  1. Cast cards at instant speed to take advantage of Rashmi's 'each turn' factor.

  2. Awareness of the top card of your library to ensure we're cashing in on Rashmi's free casts.

Flash!
So unless you pack the deck full of instants (another viable Rashmi strategy!), the other option is to give your cards flash and I've chosen a few tools to help do just that:

  • Alchemist's Refuge
  • Aluren
  • Leyline of Anticipation
  • Vedalken Orrery
  • Winding Canyons
  • Yeva, Nature's Herald - Bonus points for tribal symmetry
  • Topdeck Tricks!
As for topdeck manipulation/visibility, there's no shortage of maneuvering in here:

  • Elvish Harbinger
  • Mirri's Guile
  • Momir Vig, Simic Visionary - Absurdly good symmetry with Rashmi's abilities.
  • Mystical Tutor
  • Oracle of Mul Daya
  • Realmwalker
  • Scroll Rack
  • Sensei's Divining Top
  • Sylvan Library
  • Worldly Tutor
  • Elf Friends!
A couple of non-elves that I haven't already mentioned that simply had to join Rashmi's cause:

  • Craterhoof Behemoth - aka Craterwin.
  • Seedborn Muse - No explanation needed! Flash value gone wild.
  • And then you have the rest of the deck. The elves do what they always do - They ramp hard, synergize extremely well and quickly spiral out of control before your opponents know what hit them. Their biggest weakness is an ill-fated board wipe so be sure to hold those counterspells back and use them strategically.

As for win conditions, it's pretty straight forward - Go forth and smash face with thine elf army:

  • The aforementioned Craterwin will take you to victory.
  • Ezuri, Renegade Leader will provide pseudo-Overrun.
  • Allosaurus Shepherd or Joraga Warcaller will suddenly turn your tiny feeble elves into formidable powerhouse elves.
  • Triumph of the Hordes will infuriate everyone.
  • Beastmaster Ascension will also induce opponent salt.
  • Aluren + Cloudstone Curio has all kinds of combo potential (e.g. Coiling Oracle, Elvish Harbinger, Elvish Visionary & Eternal Witness).
  • Secret infinite elves tech (ok, not that secret...Imperious Perfect + Intruder Alarm + any mana dork = elves) + Akroma's Memorial or Concordant Crossroads is definitely a problem for the rest of the table.
  • Last but not least, a good old fashioned well timed Coat of Arms slap down.

  • One card that deserves a special mention is Mind's Dilation. It's an ominous threat without Rashmi on the table, but if you do have her in play, that free cast counts as the 'first spell of each turn' and because it's based on converted mana cost, she'll trigger. Nice.

If you've read this far, you've got the idea - Excellent tribal symmetry, overwhelming Rashmi value and general Simic goodness. Fun times!

And the results are not good. I tried to make this deck work as an 'elfball' tribal brew but it just never worked as well as I wanted it to. The value engine had explosive potential when the stars aligned, but it tended to fizzle more times than not which is not what 'simicvalue.dec' is all about. There's way stronger generals and ways to build an elf deck but I'm steering away from oldschool tribal lately - I'm just never that excited to play this deck which is an indicator that I should rip it apart and find better homes for all the great cards in here. Ok bye Rashmi!
