Rakdos the Showstopper, Stopper of Shows

Commander / EDH BR (Rakdos) Casual Control

Lord_Khaine

Welcome to my pet project, Rakdos the Showstopper!

Living up to Rakdos's accolade, the goal is stopping the show and focusing it on you. Imagine crashing a wedding, then starting your own wedding in front of the aghast audience to assert your dominance! This is the goal of constantly wiping the board, forcing players into topdeck mode through continuous discard, and recurring threats that you've discarded or lost to keep the pain train chugging along. Casual decks tend to have a large reliance on combat damage to win, and this deck likes to punish that dependency.

The Game Plan:

  1. Play draw engines and mana rocks.

  2. Wipe creatures off the board. Tell aggro and ramp/token players to not cry.

  3. Make combo and control players lose the cards they're holding in hand.

  4. Smash face, because our creatures can be played to help do #2 and #3.

  5. Repeat steps 1-4 until you win.

Simple as. If you want more depth and have to perform for a tough crowd, we have more tricks. The deck was built without infinite combos or tutors, but it does boast strong, repeatable synergies, and alternate commanders in the deck to adjust for what you're seeing at the table.

Cards that have a strong impact on the game when played together, and happen continuously or can be repeated.

Sire Of Insanity + Experimental Frenzy = create a one-sided topdeck war. No one can keep their hand, but you can play as many cards as you can pay the mana for.

Sire Of Insanity + Xantcha, Sleeper Agent = After Sire’s trigger resolves, a round of priority passes before the turn ends. Sink mana into Xantcha so that you have cards to play before your turn begins. Other players can do the same to make Xantcha’s controller cry.

Mogis, God of Slaughter + Pestilence/Last Laugh = heavy damage to life totals and creatures, keeping the board clean while burning away life totals.

The Scorpion God + Black Sun's Zenith = Kill a lot of creatures, and draw a lot of cards. Remember that you'll draw cards from The Scorpion God's triggered ability after you've shuffled Black Sun's Zenith into your library, so you might draw it again!

Geth's Grimoire + Words of Waste = Make opponents discard their hand, and draw a lot of cards! Paying for each opponent to discard a card while drawing up to three cards is powerful.

Rakdos, the Showstopper + Sanctum of Eternity = repeatable boardwipe! Cast, let the etb trigger resolve, swing on your next turn, and use Sanctum of Eternity to return Rakdos to your hand and cast him again.

Ilharg, the Raze-Boar + Rakdos the Defiler = Destroy half of an opponent's non-demon permanents, rounded up. Ilharg lets Rakdos avoid being declared as an attacker, so his first ability won't trigger.

Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger + Sanctum of Eternity/Volrath's Stronghold = repeating discard/life loss. Activate Sanctum to return Kroxa to hand in response to his etb trigger that will sacrifice him, or use Stronghold to put Kroxa back on top of the deck.

Different commanders for different pods. While casual decks tend to win through combat damage, not every deck likes to go wide, and being able to adapt is important.

Rakdos, the Showstopper = A fat 6/6 evasive beater who removes a lot of creatures in a fun way. Remember that you're the one flipping the coin, so an opponent with Krark's Thumb doesn't get to increase the odds of survival.

The Scorpion God = A draw engine and source of removal.

Mogis, God of Slaughter = Steady burn that's almost impossible to remove is good for long, grindy games. Probably my favorite, and a good choice if the table has mixed strategies, or you aren't sure what everyone's endgame is.

Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger = repeated discard is good for keeping combo and control decks in check.
