(Note: trice testing taigam in place of snapcaster mage It’s hammer time.

Currently testing survival, defense of the heart, and brisela combo in place of emrakul, lighthouse, search for azcanta, RIP

This is my most recent, and arguably most successful, version of Rafiq. The aim is to play the control game w/ 1 sided stax effects until you get your hammers rolling with Cold-Eyed Selkie or the like, legacy viable equipment, and rafiq. The deck runs enough interaction to survive until turn 3-5, in which you start to pave a path to victory. There are 2 primary lines of play to win, in order of priority to resolve:

  1. Seasons Past loops for infinite turns: using Personal Tutor or Mystical Tutor , a Time Warp variation, and Seasons Past . Takes 12 mana to pull off, but possible as early as turn 4/5 via using time walks to keep hitting land drops, big mana dorks like Priest of Titania , or Sword of Feast and Famine with 6 lands.

  2. Sovereigns of Lost Alara + Eldrazi Conscription . Voltron in cEDH!?? =O!!! This is a line of play that speeds up the clock and can be used successfully in conjunction with time warp variations to one shot our opponents one at a time. Functions similarly to how control zur and GAAIV run the RIP+helm combo. Another variation is to use Cephalid Constable with rafiq to return your opponent’s permanents to hand (including lands).

Current recorded record in 4 player, discord/cEDH cockatrice games: 5-3

Currently testing Parallax Wave and Submerge

Updates Add

  • meddling mage, - muddle the mixture - tangle wire

  • scavenging ooze + finest hour + cephalid constable

On watch list to add: survival package with elesh norn and loyal retainers

Meddling mage proved too difficult to play against 3 opponents, even if I know what their decks are doing. Muddle is ok but double blue can be difficult to leave open often when we want to be proactive with our creatures during our turn. The transmute targets in this deck are suboptimal; you really dont want to be paying 5 mana to hate on one player. Will reconsider adding if we bring back null rod or RIP. Tangle wire scales horribly late game, where we want to be. Its an underplayed card in cEDH in my opinion, but we cant abuse it well enough. If we could get a reliable combo that we are trying to stall into, it would warrant a spot.

Scooze for additional grave hate that is asymmetrical. Life gain/beater minority relevant, GSZable and other creature tutorable is hugely relevant. Finest hour as a flex spot. We really lack an “I win” card, whether its a combo or not. Just something that swings the game heavily in our favor and makes it difficult to lose. This criteria also applies to cephalid constable. These 2 have come in and out countless times and I still consider them extremely meta dependent. They are terrible in creature heavy metas, but solid if creature light (I should add, VERY creature light, a la jelvala/kess storm).
