Just making it smaller

MagicalHacker says... #1

Hey there! Sorry about the wait, bla bla bla graduating, bla bla bla holidays, you get the idea.

So unfortunately, I can't point you in the direction of a rakdos group slug deck that I've built, however, I can offer some hopefully helpful advice.

First of all, since you said you want some ways to hurt yourself less, I thought I would make some suggestions towards gaining life as a way to live longer. Being able to gain life based off of dealing damage or loss of life seems the best here:

Since Havoc Festival and other cards prevent life gain, maybe you should be looking to preventing damage instead:

Next, I want to address the commander. I can see how this deck could have started out as a Mogis deck and over time switched to the more impactful Kaervek, but let me make my arguments FOR switching it (back):

  1. Mogis costs four mana total. At half the cost, he's worth it imo for a group slug deck.
  2. He's indestructible and sometimes not a creature. Extremely difficult to get rid of. Whereas, a Murder is all it takes for Kaervek to go poof.
  3. Mogis gets around creatures with Hexproof or protection. You can't say no to sacrifice when you're too low to lose life.
  4. He's my least favorite god, and I'm recommending him. That's how much I think Kaervek is blehh.

At least test it out (again).

Lastly, here are some potentially new/crazy cards you might like:

Hope I helped and happy deck tweaking!

@MagicalHacker Thanks for the CnC. I actually started and have continued this deck as a Kaervek deck. He isn't a very practical commander, but he is also very fun when he does work. I typically will not play him unless I have a good board state, or my opponents are having counterspell wars/storming off/etc. Mogis is strong, but his effect is very linear and overall pretty meh. I'll probably stick with Kaervek, and hope that a more fun Rakdos general is printed. Just to note, I would probably swap out Kaervek for Olivia Voldaren before Mogis.

Just as a side note, Kaervek is also better than Mogis due to the ability to hit creatures. You may notice I have very few ways to deal with large amounts of creatures, and he is a great way to slowly eat away at their field. It keeps the Edric, Spymaster of Trest and Derevi, Empyrial Tactician decks in check sometimes.

Mourner's Shield is exactly what I would be looking for. Loxodon Warhammer will likely also make an appearance in here, but only after I decide on what to cut.

After looking through the searches you did, only Thought Prison and Bloodchief Ascension jumped out at me. I'll have to find them in the future.

Thanks for your help!

Mogis also gets to commander damage pretty easily. You'd be surprised how much damage he can deal to non-token players over the course of a single game. I heavily recommend it, at least for multiplayer. When you're playing multiplayer he really does 6 damage every upkeep ha.

Price of Glory to get rid of those pesky counters and other instants?

@Zimmers_0 I've decided that this would be my entirely casual deck, so I'm trying to keep the land destruction to a minimum. It is a great card though! Thanks for the suggestion!

Rain of Gore is a wonderful card to fight against lifegain.

@abihoooo It is a pretty great card, however most people don't run a lot of lifegain in their decks. It would be a dead card more often than not, so I won't bother adding it in.

@Siccdecks91 Group slug is a very fun archetype to play, although not terribly competitive. Anyways, I looked at your deck and I really like the inclusion of Citadel of Pain. Might have to use it in here.

@Izzetdimir Worldfire is 100% banned in EDH. It basically just makes the game into "who can topdeck a Lightning Bolt first?"

Fair enough, my mistake for not looking that up.

@Izzetdimir I am happy it is banned, otherwise it would make games really boring and actually allow red decks to win games with burn and weenies.

This is more so a question about Mana Barbs. I'm thinking of running it in a Rakdos, Lord of Riots deck and was thinking of a way to counteract the damage done to me. Would Urza's Armor do the trick?

September 13, 2015 11:31 a.m.

Siccdecks91 says... #16

Yes urza's armor will prevent manabarbs and burning earth damage if you play Mogis, God of Slaughter use Pariah's Shield since mogis is indestructible you'll never take damage if he's a creature

That Mogis thing sounds pretty tempting. Thanks for the help/advice!

The King of Group Slug this is my logos build its group slug that uses enchantments to pump mogis into a creature and slowly kill my opponents and controls creatures instants and sorceries kill creatures and hit my opponents

September 13, 2015 1:16 p.m.

lemmingllama says... #19

@Schmooperton You are correct, Urza's Armor would do that. You can also run more mana rocks to help out with both ramp and stopping the damage.

Also I'd be wary about using Pariah's Shield since you need the devotion to have Mogis online, and that makes him vulnerable to removal. It can still work, but it can sometimes be a little troublesome.

Siccdecks91 says... #20

Yeah it's definitely risky but then again so is logos group slug

September 13, 2015 1:44 p.m.

lemmingllama says... #21

@Siccdecks91 Group slug is far less risky as long as you can deal more damage to others than to yourself. That's why cards like Wound Reflection are so great, they ensure that your opponents take more damage than you.
