Intro

This Deck is my personal take on a competitive build for Orvar, the All-Form, this deck seeks to control the board state through the use of counterspells and bounce spells while taking advantage of Orvar, the All-Form ability to draw cards and generate card and mana advantage to stay ahead of your opponents.

A little background behind the creation of this deck. I built this deck specifically to compete with an card:urza high lord artificer Stax deck as well as a Krark, the Thumbless // Sakashima of a Thousand Faces spell slinger deck both of which run loads of combos and counterspells. that being said this deck has naturally sped up as I have built it and has forgone most dead weight leaving only cads that serve a defined purpose towards winning in the 99.

this deck performs best against other combo and value-based decks that seek the generated value through key pieces while it struggles against creature decks that build large board states that swing wide. that being said if you can build cad advantage fast enough you can usually over come most go-wide decks by denying the early and mid game value.

Reasons you would like this deck

  • if you like decks that rely on their commander
  • if you like decks that run high interaction
  • if you like decks that can pull tons of different combos
  • if you like decks that can survive combo pieces being disrupted
  • if you like spending way too much time trying to find the line to victory

Reasons you won't like this deck

  • if you don't like decks that oppress your opponents
  • if you don't like decks that cause your commander to be killed on sight
  • if you don't like decks that are weak to creature heavy pods
  • if you don't like having to plan far ahead because one spell can make all the difference
  • if you don't like decks that will steamroll if ignored
You don’t need to read this section to play the deck, this is here to explain the purpose of each card so you can understand why I added it and also to help you decide how you may want to change the deck

When playing this deck getting out Orvar is the most important part, most of the deck relays on him to gain an advantage, with that in mind you often are looking for a hand that can get Orvar out on turn 4 at the latest, this means yea will want to either keep a hand that already has 3-4 mana sources of a hand with a good way to draw into lands early with cards like Mystic Remora or card:rystic studies other than that don't worry too much about good cantrips as you will easily draw into those.

As for your early plays once you get Orvar, the All-Form out your main goal is to play as many cantrips that let you draw in order to dig through your deck as well as cloning values pieces such as Cloudkin Seer or Idol of Oblivion to draw more and more.

Now that Orvar, the All-Form is out and you have been able to draw a few cards we move to the mid-game plan which is to keep drawing and keep your opponents under control.

While still using the draw engines you established in the early game you want to save cards such as Capsize,AEther Tradewinds and Venser, Shaper Savant in order to bounce board threats as well as holding up counter spells to slow down your opponents and protect your engines

The end game really start whenever you have drawn into one of the many combos in this deck, all you really need to do here is make sure you have some sort of protection prepared such as counterspells, one good thing about this deck is most of it is instant speed so you can often win or at least create an unstoppable board state at just the right moment not just during your turn.
This section will be very long as there are tons of combos as well as the fact that many combos pieces can be substituted with others I will try my best to keep everything organized and understandable, don't worry about learning all the combos, after a few games with this deck you will start to recognize the combos based of the major pieces

All combos bellow require either Orvar, the All-Form or Vesuvan Duplimancy to be present.

All the following combos work as long as your devotion is three greater than the cost of the spell + buyback. to perfomr the combo all you do is tap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx then cast a buyback spell targeting it and sacrifice the tapped land to the legend rule. then simply rinse and repeate until you have enough mana.

while it may seem like you need a lot of devotion because the copies you create contribute to devotion it is actuly super easy to get enough devotion

Because Peregrine Drake untaps 5 lands it can be comboed by copying it with a buyback Spell you do this by tapping 5 lands then target Peregrine Drake with any buyback spell thus untapping the 5 lands as well as leaving mana floating the combo Peregrine Drake + Capsize works when paired with two copies of the following
Because Cloud of Faeries untaps 2 lands it can be comboed by copying it with a buyback Spell you do this by tapping 2 lands then target Peregrine Drake with any buyback spell thus untapping the 2 lands as well as leaving mana floating this is much harder to pull off than using Peregrine Drake but is still possible

in the following combos when I mention mana reducer I am referring to the following cards Combos
this section will be a bit convoluted but essential for each buyback spell as long as you have at least one copy of Orvar, the All-Form for each blue pip in the cost + byback plus one along with at least one mana reducer or Orvar, the All-Form for each generic mana. in the cost + buyback the combo will work.

this combo works by taping the lands required to cast the reduced cost of the buyback spell and target a land with its effect, then if If you had enough mana reducers + orvars you will create more untaped land copies than you originally started with.

in the following combos when I mention mana reducer I am referring to the following cards Combos
note the original Orvar, the All-Form is still required
this combo produces infinite mana by juggling certain instances in order to keep re-casting them.

inorder for this combo to work you need 2 of the following 3 spells, one of which is in your graveyard, along with this you will need Mystic Sanctuary and second copy of Orvar, the All-Form in play as well as 2 copies of the folowing cards in play to perform this combo simply cast one of the spells targeting Mystic Sanctuary when the Orvars make the copies have one return the other spell fom the graveyard to the top of you library and dont target any spell with the other trigger, then once the spell resolves you will draw the card you just put on top and can cast it with the copies of Mystic Sanctuary created.
this combo works by infinitely copying a draw spell over and over again as many times as you want to draw that many cards the one downside is due to how the stack works you have to decide how much you want to draw before you start the combo.

The way this combo works is while Naru Meha, Master Wizard is on the field you want to target it with one of the following cards this will trigger orvar and create a token copy of Naru Meha, Master Wizard. with that copy target the original spell and retarget Naru Meha, Master Wizard, this can then be repeated as many times as you want. in order to end the combo simply have the copied spell target something else

Targeting Naru Meha, Master Wizard with the following spell will make this combo work Targeting Naru Meha, Master Wizard with the following spell will also make this combo work but you won't draw till later in the turn order
Because the average CMC of clone spells in this deck is less than 3 CMC allows you to almost guardedly win as soon as you play Coveted Jewel everytime you copy it you will almost always hit at least one more spell to clone it and keep the chain going. ultimately the way this combo plays out is you play Coveted Jewel and keep copying it till you hit Thassa's Oracle, respond to the trigger by continuing to copy Coveted Jewel until you hit the end of your deck and let Thassa's Oracle resolve.
Now that you have infinite mana either from one of the combos above or another convoluted way from a combo not listed here are a few ways to turn it into a win

if you have a Aetherflux Reservoir you simply gain enough life through the mana creation in order to shoot everyone

with any of the Buyback spells you can make infinite creatures on the end step before your turn and just swing out and kill everyone

using one of the buyback spells you can keep cloning the following cards in order to draw your entire deck and win with Thassa's Oracle
while this is not exactly a wincon you can infinitely clone Venser, Shaper Savant to bounce all permanents and counter all spells
  • Don't be afraid to use your buyback spells early there are many different ways to get them back and sometimes it's more important to get the value now instead of holding on to it later.
  • PLAY AT INSTANT SPEED except for a few spells everything is instant speed, this means your standard turn is spent playing a value-generating permanent and then passing, this lets you keep up mana for counterspells, and if you don't have to use any use all you clone spells on the end step before your turn
  • play orvar off the curve, often if you are playing people who know what this deck can do it is safer to wait a turn to get the extra mana so you can play Orvar and keep up a protection spell as well
  • think ahead, lot of this deck is based on what you can get away with based on what your opponents do, in order to speed up the game try to plan for as much as possible
  • don't hold back wincons, due to most roads leading to Thassa's Oracle as your win you may be tempted to not play cards that let you draw infinity, that is a mistake due to the sheer amount of redundancy as well as win through lifegain, combat and Thassa's Oracle its better to play these draw pieces and get the value from them asap.
  • you can play Thassa's Oracle on turn two, building of of last point, a great way to build up devotion and card selection is to just cast Thassa's Oracle and clone it whenever you need to dig fo cards, even if you lose all your copies you can always just win another way.
