Primer - KCI Teshar (English Version)

Translated from Portuguese by PehapXB Abaixo, versão em português. (Bellow, Portuguese version)

Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle is currently classified as a Mid-Power commander, because, a mono white commander cannot be considered competitive. The colour lacks card advantage, good ramps, recursive capabilities and have only bad combos, right? WRONG! I ask you to leave your own pre-conceptions aside and open your mind to the potential of Teshar.

Let’s take a moment to analyse: What this commander has to offer? A 2/2 body, flying for a 4 cmc creature, but the most important is it unique ability: the capability to return one creature with 3 or less cmc from the graveyard to the battlefield whenever we play a historic spell (artifacts, legends or saga enchantments). This is what makes this bird so dangerous, and we can build a whole deck based on this ability, granting us consistent victories on turns 3 and 4 with a dedicated combo approach. First of all, how the deck works? The deck works similar to the famous KCI (Krark-Clan Ironworks) combo, that abuses from artifact and creature recursion loop. The pieces required for the combo are:

Wrapping up: With the commander on the board (piece 1), sacrifice one piece 3, by using piece 2. Cast one artifact (preferably one piece 4), return piece 3, sacrifice or bounce a piece 4 and repeat the process. From this point, we can begin a sac loop recursion that generally ends the game by itself, according to the combination of pieces that are being used.

Another option to combo off is the famous Bomberman: a card like Auriok Salvagers and Lion's Eye Diamond (LED), where we can generate mana with the artifact and return it with the creature’s ability and finish the game with any mana sink or any artifact that can sacrifice itself for any useful effect (like Chromatic Star). But here comes another unique aspect of our deck. It is the only deck that is capable of performing the bomberman loop in 3 different ways (4 if we use the classic Auriok Salvagers)! Once that with our commander, we can have the same result as if we had the Salvagers, as long as we have a Salvage Scout (SS), Restoration Specialist (RS) or Salvager of Ruin (SR). Anyone of them, with our commander and the LED can combo us into infinite mana and artifact recursion.

  • Step 1: Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle, SS, ReS or RuS on the battlefield.
  • Step 2: Sacrifice the LED for white.
  • Step 3: Sacrifice SS, RS or SR and return LED to your hand.
  • Step 4: Cast LED and return SS/ RS/SR to the field once again.
  • Step 5: repeat steps 2-5 as much as necessary.
  • Step 6: recur artifacts, using the bomberman combo, as we used in the other loops of the deck (such as Chromatic Star to draw the whole deck). Keep in mind that Salvager of Ruin only brings back artifacts put in the graveyard this turn.

Interestingly, Myr Retriever, Junk Diver, Workshop Assistant and Scrap Trawler, along with a source of sacrifice, Teshar and LED also act as Bombermen. Skullclamp can work as sac outlet in conjunction with Myr Retriever and LED.

We can highlight one card from this deck: Ranger-Captain of Eos, a fantastic card that fulfills its role as tutor, protector or as a way to prevent proactive moves from opponents on their turns. With access to Lion's Eye Diamond in hand or graveyards for example, gives you the possibility to search directly for Salvage Scout, combining with infinite mana and with Ranger himself seeking a finisher such as Walking Ballista for example. In addition, Ranger-Captain of Eos opens a new combo line, as long as you have a way to sacrifice creatures and extract value from that process (for example, using Altar of Dementia for mill or generating infinite mana with Ashnod's Altar or Phyrexian Altar). With our Ranger and our Commander on the battlefield, we can fetch all our cost 0 creatures (Memnite, card:Ornitophter and Shield Sphere) using a sac outlet or activating the Ranger himself. With the last ETB, we seek Glint Hawk, who upon entering returns a cost 0 artifact. We sacrifice the Hawk, cast the cost 0, return the Hawk from the graveyard, return another cost 0 to the hand, and repeat the process.

But how do we have enough consistency to achieve any of these combos? In the end of the day, we are still playing mono W. We have a huge problem to tutor (in this list, only Recruiter of the Guard, Ranger-Captain of Eos, Inventors' Fair and Enlightened Tutor) and draw cards. We fix this problem with a enormous amount of redundant combo pieces, ways to fill up our grave (Mesmeric Orb, Altar of Dementia and Grinding Station), once our recursive capabilities are unreal! Cards that fit the "eggs" mechanic can help digging through the deck (Chromatic Sphere, Chromatic Star, Conjurer's Bauble, Mind Stone, Mishra's Bauble, Urza's Bauble and Scarecrone). We can even use more direct draw engines, even though most of them are conditional (Skullclamp, Mentor of the Meek, Skyscanner, Filigree Familiar, Oblation, Geier Reach Sanitarium, Mikokoro, Center of the Sea and Bazaar of Baghdad. The last is really fantastic.).

Even though the combo requires a great number of pieces, it can be easily assembled until turn 4 (70%) and sometimes turn 5 (92%), as you can see from these tests https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vXcMdM1XaQguYkPciBvoV2NQIj1NkutJ-E4-Y6iZmtw/edit?usp=sharing. It is worth noting that most of the the pieces are recoverable from the grave, which makes this general mostly fear grave hates (Rest in Peace, Leyline of the Void, etc), cards that shut down artifacts (Stony Silence/Null Rod and Collector Ouphe), or stax pieces that may increase the artifacts’ cost, impeding the loops to occur. The deck has tools to deal with those threats (Generous Gift, Oblation, Path to Exile, Unexpectedly Absent, Walking Ballista e Leonin Relic-Warder), but they are not many. Note that many of these responses can be used proactively in our own cards. The best solution is combo off before the hate comes. This list is relatively complex to be piloted and wrong choices may brick your deck. With this in mind it is necessary a good amount of training to absorb all the perceptions and notions required to play this deck.

That’s it. I hope this deck have interested you, or at least won the respect it deserves. Give Teshar a chance and it will surprise you. And remember: all feedback is welcome! Tested the list? Did it work as expected? Great, tell me! Not? Tell me, too! I wish you good games!

Aqui entra outro grande diferencial do nosso deck.

  • Passo 2: Sacrifique a LED, gerando 3 manas brancas.

Sacrificamos o Hawk, conjuramos o custo 0, devolvemos o Hawk do cemitério, devolvemos outro custo 0 para a mão e repetimos o processo.

Temos um grave problema para tutorar (nessa lista apenas com Recruiter of the Guard, Ranger-Captain of Eos, Inventors' Fair e Enlightened Tutor e comprar cartas.

Testou a lista? Funcionou como o esperado? Ótimo, me diga! Não? Me diga também! Te desejo bons jogos!
