No Hand? No Problem! —Jan. 9, 2019

Thanks to KayneMarco's suggestion, I put in Shrieking Affliction since I had one lying around.

Took out Mercurial Pretender

Put in Shrieking Affliction

Just cruirous about your mana base are you intentionally not running Fetches and shock lands like steam vents and friendly lands like sulfur falls. id recommend those to you because it will make lands enter untapped with an option of having them enter untapped.

Deathholme, I am running those lands for two reasons:

  • I can't afford the deck with shock lands and fetch lands

  • When I build my mana base, I mostly just use the lands I have lying around

Over time, I will graudally replace the taplands with better lands, but that depends on what cards I pull/trade for

I would avoid using Rakdos Carnarium with so many other tapped lands. Also, you should increase your mana rock count, stufff like Fellwar Stone, Talisman of Dominance, Talisman of Indulgence, Charcoal Diamond, etc. as well as running cards like Dark Ritual will help you run out your army faster.

enpc yeah, I was thinking of cutting the carnarium for something like MindStone. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey, to expand on what others have commented on about the manabase here's some budget playable lands to consider adding. All my suggestions will be $4 or less (most are $2 or less).

Other cards for the discard theme to consider adding:

Budget staples in Grixis colors to consider adding:

I offer more help. If you like some of these suggestions I can help you to make cuts.

Good luck with your deck.

multimedia Thanks for all the great suggestions! Among the lands, I plan on using Command Tower, Tainted Peak, Tainted Isle, and Crumbling Necropolis because I can trade for them with my play group. As for the nonland cards, I'm still in the process of buying the current cards, but Fellwar Stone, Waste Not, and Dark Deal sound super solid esp. for the deck. What would you cut to include these three cards?

Again, thanks so much for the suggestions!

Hey, you're welcome.

Possible adds > cuts:

  1. Fellwar Stone > Pillar of Origins
  2. Waste Not > Specter's Wail
  3. Dark Deal > Dread Specter
  4. Command Tower > Izzet Guildgate
  5. Crumbling Necropolis > Cinder Barrens
  6. Tainted Peak > Rakdos Guildgate
  7. Tainted Isle > Dimir Guildgate

Hmmm, I can't take out Dread Specter or Specter's Wail just because they are on theme with the deck. I'll definitely replace the lands when I can get my hands on them. Maybe taking out Mercurial Pretender and Bad Moon? I've also started to notice that Lazav, the Multifarious doesn't do that much in game. Maybe I should just cut him?

Dread and Wail are on theme, but so is Waste Not and Dark Deal :) Even though Dread and Wail are on theme they are honestly not very good cards. Wail only makes one player discard one card for two mana; that's not worth a card as a one time play in multiplayer Commander. Dread is a Specter, but it's a four mana 2/2 who doesn't have flying and doesn't makes your opponent discard when it attacks or does combat damage (not sure why it's even a Specter). There are a lot of other four drop Specters here, they're all better than Dread.

I wouldn't cut Lazav as he can become a dead Specter in your graveyard. Bad Moon is a fine cut, in fact I don't think you need any of the anthem effects. They are nice to give a boost to ground creatures, but Specters are flying therefore they really don't need the power boost. Mercurial Pretender is five mana making it one of the more mana expensive clones for what you get, it's a good cut.

I've been brewing Spector's tribal on tapped out for a long time and abandoned the idea and tried it again and abandoned it again. I just can get spector tribal to work. It's really hard to do. The tempo is slow the damage is slow. And the discard effect is slow. And I couldn't find any finishers

griffstick Thanks for the feedback! I've found that cards like Shared Animosity and Kindred Charge are very nice finishers. I too have had some difficulty since there are only 22 specters and only 2/3 of them are playable. However, Wizards has printed 3 specters in the last three sets so I'm holding out hope for more playables in the future.

Damage to opponents from discard effects is good but what bout when they have no cards left to discard? Got a few ideas for ya to check out that will damage them for having an empty hand:

KayneMarco thanks for the suggestions, I really like Shrieking Affliction because it's a one-drop. It looks like it functions well too. When I get home I'll put it in and take out Mercurial Pretender.
