Power-Bottom Scrap

Grenzo, Dungeon Warden

7/10 - Optimized

Greetings, and welcome to my dungeon ! See these rusty tools, over there ?
... No ? Oh, right, sorry. _Pays ._ Now you see it ? Yes, I know that's an Iron Myr, but that's part of an infinite combo kill. Do I have your attention now ? Good.
I wanted to build a Grenzo deck for a long time, and by the time I found the card I also wanted to build an artifact deck. Both ideas collided, and there you have it !

So, why should you play Grenzo ? Welp, first of all you don't have the choice in that specific deck since it won't do anything without Grenzo on the board. You'll manipulate the bottom of your library, so you **need** Grenzo. And if you're not playing Grenzo because you don't have a deck for that, find someone who have one you can borrow, because it's awesome to play.
Pro :
  • Original, not everybody is using the bottom of their library.
  • Super fun to pilot.
  • Surprisingly strong by playing a ton of jank.
  • Looks like manadork tribal, so you'll be under the radar most part of the game.
Cons :
Like said previously, you need Grenzo on the board to start your engine, BUT that doesn't mean you have to play him on turn 2 ; if you have a manadork to play, play the manadork t2, so you can play Grenzo t3 and activate him with the extra mana.
**Play Grenzo with X = 0**, it makes the deck quicker, and you only have 2 creatures out of 39 which have 3+ power, so don't spend mana you can't afford to.

Once Grenzo is on the field, you want to snowball a ton of manas, so try to play manadorks and ramp pieces from your hand, but not anything else, just pump your extra mana into Grenzo to randomly fill your board and graveyard. You have one goal : to find Reito Lantern, Soldevi Digger, Epitaph Golem or The Cauldron of Eternity and put it on the battlefield.
Once it's done, things may get ugly, so brace yourself.
This is a combo deck, so your mid game will be terrifying both for you and your opponents ; they're on the verge of defeat and you have to pull it out or you'll have to rebuild important pieces and the game may slip right in front of you.

To prevent a slowdown, a huge graveyard is a plus, and having a ton of manas will help you recast Grenzo even if he died 2 or 3 times without being totally out of the game. Protecting Grenzo with Lightning Greaves or Cloak and Dagger is a way to save some manas, and with one of the previous cards allowing to stuff the bottom of your library with your graveyard, you can recur creatures if needed.

And once you're ready to survive whatever your opponents will throw you when they'll sense the danger, it's time to find a combo !
Your way to win is by combo kill the whole table, and fortunatly there's plenty of ways to do so. Oh, and when I said it was important that Grenzo sticks on the table, I really meant it since it's also the source of all the combos.

The principle is fairly simple : get a sacrifice outlet, get a way to put cards from your graveyard on the bottom of your library repeatedly, and don't be negative on mana by sacrificing a creature, putting it on the bottom of your library and getting it out with Grenzo. For instance, Epitaph Golem + Krark-Clan Ironworks + Palladium Myr is an infinite loop of sacrifice/ETB with Grenzo and a source of haste on the field. But Ashnod's Altar + Murderous Rider is already infinite with Grenzo and _without_ a source of haste.

If you're positive on mana (Priest of Gix, Pitiless Plunderer, and many, many more), you can generate infinite mana, and if you have infinite mana, you have infinite Grenzo activation, allowing you to get cards like Judith, the Scourge Diva and ping the whole table to death.
- No Teferi's Puzzle Box or Mindmoil : as strong as it looks in a Grenzo deck, it's just sloooow. At least, the Puzzle Box distrupts opponents hands and is and artifact, but meh.
- Crystal Ball is still in the deck, but this is **so good** ! It looks like nothing, but scry 2 is awesome, trust me on this one.
- The deck is pretty low on lands but still works well. Having few lands that comes out of Grenzo's abitlity is a good thing. Had on my mind to get out one more land and slot in a Crucible of Worlds.
- Cloak and Dagger, not a good card, but at least it protects Grenzo for free, and you get a bit more power too which allows you to get out Scrap Trawler and Epitaph Golem more easily.
- Few draw cards, because most of your mana will be pumped into Grenzo anyway.
