Maybeboard

this deck is the pinnacle of my mtg-creations. why? because of this combo: Grand Abolisher + Chronomantic Escape + Lethal Vapors its such a great combo that wizards decided to push the deck a bit and print Teferi's Protection. :P

its a deck for johnnies. for those that like control and a challenge.

how to play

so as the goal to accomplish a combo that grants a win but doesnt end the game is a little complicated but thats part of the challenge in playing the deck.

basically there is lots of mana needed. thus every landdrop is important. the deck is built to mulligan to a tutor or a draw effect while having always access to enough lands.

Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim is a nice cheap deathtouch blocker in the earlygame and can give life over the long run to keep going.

as you have to react at some points in every game just going to draw a card each turn will make you fall behind if in midgame or lategame. thus early game will be looking out for more potent draw engines. Necropotence is the best but Land Tax + Scroll Rack is also good.

often you need to get better protection like Solitary Confinement going to use up your mana for proactive exiling intead of reacting with your control.

dont overuse control, save them for the most vital moments. this deck is best played conservative at most times to then suddenly make a mini-blowout once or twice a game. there are the sac lands, dark ritual and rain of filth that advance timing options for your spells without the need to run artifact ramp. shure it seems like carddisadvantage but the deck want to have a full grip at all times and that really doesnt hurt at all.

recursion is not much but potent: yawgwin as the big oneshot and Mistveil Plains. mistveil plains is so good! if you have land tax and confinement you can keep the confinement forever (there can be games where you dont need to go for the full combo. when you have confinement early and draw all your exilers it can be attractive to just exile all enchantment and graveyard removal to keep thee confinement and win).

mistveil plains also is potent with necropotence and scroll rack as you can get your spell back at eot. attrition games with utter end can be a quick seal in the endgame as just casting debt to the deathless every turn.

Ivory Tower can do all the things you can imagine along necro, reliqtower, mistveilplains, scrollrack and glacial chasm.

if your meta runs lots of winter orb, exchanging some tapped lands for untapped golden painlands is good. otherwise the tappedlands are doing very well as the deck is very passive.

if you cant proxy this - the deck can be played on a budget too. yawgmoth's will is a card i wouldnt miss but everything else will find budget alternatives. shure that takes away some synergy but doesnt make the deck bad. if there is money for a second money card its academy rector. i mean you want to play ayli without rector?

if you want a REAL challenge cut the finishers. these cards are in the deck for lifegain and protection but can kill opponents. it can be intriguing to go for them as wincons if you run them so it is important to know what you want from your deck. if these cards would not have the lifedrain part the flavor would be best. with the drain the deck transforms into a potential control monster.

depending on what you extract from opponents deck you can hide behind a large variety of cards. the deck was created with Chronomantic Escape's until next turn clause. but the deck is able to extract anything so its possible to hide behind Glacial Chasm, Teferi's Protection or Solitary Confinement forever. the difference between "the until next turn (teferi/escape)" and "the static but upkeep (confinement/chasm)" is: the first need skipping the turns(lethalV+abolisher) the later can but doesnt need to. if doing so the benefit is it "pays" for confinement and chasm forever (as you just skip the upkeeps). but there are other possibilities to skip drawing cards and prevent decking while holding protection too.
