PDH(WR) - Lorehold Apprentice

Pauper EDH* RW (Boros)

Alkadron

Maybeboard

Lorehold Apprentice does some very cool stuff with our spirits. When you cast an instant/sorcery, each spirit you've got taps to deal a damage to E A C H opponent. The obvious plan here is: play a lot of spirits, then play some instants/sorceries. And that's most of what this deck is about.

...but there's few very cool things to mention on the side as well.

Cards like Call to Glory and Gleam of Resistance are spectacular because when you cast them, the Apprentice's trigger goes on the stack ABOVE the spell. So you can let that trigger resolve, tap all your spirits for massive damage to your opponents, then let the Call to Glory resolve and untap all your spirits to do it again. For bonus points, you can block in the meantime.

Thermo-Alchemist is obviously a powerhouse in a deck that wants to cast a lot of instant/sorceries. Lobber Crew and Brimstone Trebuchet don't untap as often, but the Call to Glory's and the Gleam of Resistance's will untap them as well, and they're defensive, and they do good damage on turns when your commander gets removed.

The spells we want to use to trigger the Apprentice are primarily:

  • cheap
  • instants
  • cantrips

We want to be able to hit them at the end of a turn cycle, right before our next turn starts, so that our creatures are all always untapped to discourage folks attacking into us. A lot of them are defensive cards to make sure that if someone does attack into us, we can block profitably (first strike, protection, and indestructible help with this). And we want as many of these spells as possible to cantrip for us to keep our hand relatively full, which can be a challenge in Red/White.
