I'm Only Human, Don't Put A Type On Me

Pavel the Mighty, Grand Champion of Righteous Chaos, Revoker of the Mandate of Heaven, Bearer of the Hand of Doom! Bound to do evil and spread chaos in exchange for ultimate power, Pavel corrupted the deal such that he could atone, manipulating chaos to do good in the world and ceasing his evil ways. Pavel is a famed firebrand and outlaw, for his self-appointed burden is to challenge the authority of the corrupt, using the power of evil to do 'good', all in the name of maximum Chaos! Pavel is famed for traveling to areas with unfit leaders and publicly challenging their authority, giving them a time of reckoning if they don't abdicate. When the time of reckoning arrives, so does Pavel, and neither man nor barrier can keep him from meting out justice to the unworthy. With (potentially) infinite power at the tips of his fingers, it's no surprise when incredible things are written by the bards, tales of the brush Pavel's smallest finger slaying stalwart foes, of Pavel laughing in the face of certain death, even coming out unscathed standing against whole armies due to his unholy Gift. The power of Doom courses through his very being, and all unworthy leaders cower in fear at Pavel's name. Pavel's path is unique, he's firmly on the anarchy side of Libertarianism (Pavel is perhaps a Radical Egalitarian, if such a thing exists), and though his ends are always for the betterment of all (overall), his methods are sometimes suspect, so maybe have a Rule Zero talk before playing a deck like this!

Pavel may not look like much at first glance, but I loved the art, and the flavor text seemed to have more substance than many, so I thought it was a good pick for a Vorthos-leaning deck. Pavel represents a figure that brings absolute Chaos where he goes, much like many of my favorite characters from Russian novels, characters like Pechorin or Stavrogin. Both of those character would have to be a bit different today to work, and Pavel reflects this. Both represent a sort of extreme freedom, and are very 'larger than life', things this deck aims for. The Custom Headings can be switched to Type if that's more helpful, I think most of the headings are clear enough.

So, seeing as most of my land hate can't hit Basics, maybe I should look into Orcish Settlers? The thought of dumping 15 mana off of a pair of Storage lands (after being mocked all game for how bad Storage lands are) and just wiping out the Archenemy's lands is pretty sweet, and the art is an all time favorite of mine. I've used it in a Gruul deck that used Orcish Lumberjack to generate huge clumps of mana, this deck can't use Lumberjack unfortunately, but that doesn't mean I can't diesel big stuff out.

Edit: More of a someday thing, but I think I need to sell something to try and get a Word of Command, such a huge flavor win, and such a weird old card. In the mean time maybe I should look at the Orcs as placeholders? I'd probably pull Too Greedily, Too Deep, it's a situationally great card, but this deck can't really count on it having anything of it's own in the bin that's big enough to matter, so it can play very poorly. I feel like 7 mana into Settlers would eat 3 lands, that's pretty good, right, and it's almost always a good ability I'd argue, people play really good lands.

Edit: I ended up throwing in one of my all time favorite cards instead, I might switch things up in the future, but I'm VERY happy to include Phyrexian Totem! It's got great synergy with this list, the various removal and wipes can clear the field of attackers, at which point 3 mana for a 5/5 is technically a clock (and one that people find exciting because they can cross their fingers and pray to topdeck a bolt!). I am unsure Rakdos Keyrune will quite make the cut, but it's a MUCH better blocker fwiw, and 3 damage for 2 mana is hardly bad. I'd probably pull a mana rock for Keyrune if I do add it, unless I feel like I want even more mana. I am still interested in Orcish Settlers, that art is precious.

Edit: Because the ceiling is MUCH higher I pulled Humble Defector (again!) for Winds of Changefoil. I'm sure I'll sneak Defector back in (again again), it's a flavorful card in it's own right.

Edit: Switched out Worn Powerstone for Faithless Looting, this deck really loves early turn draw to turn bad hands into keeps, and Worn Powerstone's mana isn't always good, access to better cards is always good in contrast. It also lets me use some Graveyard synergies a little more easily, so it might be worth looking at this area further.

Edit: Snuck an Unstoppable Slasher in to replace Dream Devourer, at least for now. I like the idea of a relatively aggressive clock that's not super tall, it's also a way to force people to throw their Commander under the bus to avoid losing half their life, and fwiw I can play it after a Damnation or Blasphemous Act, which would be pretty terrifying. It's funny how the counter thing makes it a non-bo with a few cards, but it's got great synergy with Berserkers' Onslaught!
