Dr. Jekyll and Mrs. Hyde (Phage EDH)

Commander / EDH* Mono-Black Theme/Gimmick

Sideboard

At first you may think this deck is a MEME. However, playing it you will see how far it is from the truth. This is a two sided deck. One side Relentless Rats, the second being a dooms day device with Phage the Untouchable controlling the detonator. The cards in your opening hand determine which is the correct side to choose.

Dr. Jekyll - (Relentless Rats) - Like most relentless rat decks you are trying to get Thrumming Stone into play as soon as possible to fill your board with rats. If you have at least one rat, a tutor/thrumming stone in your hand, and enough mana to cast both out quickly you should pick this side. Without an answer from your opponents you will win the game. This is how most rat decks work. So then, why Phage? Why her over a commander like Marrow-Gnawer? Well, relentless rat decks fall apart when your opponent has an answer to thrumming stone or blows up your field full of rats. When this happens a tribal commander does not help you win the game. Phage does. With all of the rats out of the deck you have a significantly smaller deck that is now optimized to utilize her as a win-con.

Mrs. Hyde - (Phage the Untouchable) - It is not as hard to get Phage onto the battlefield as players think. For this strategy all you need is a way to get Phage out of the command zone and enough mana to cast her. Command Beacon and Netherborn Altar are the easiest options to move her out of the command zone and into your hand. Once there, you can cast her worry free and return her from the grave with any number black spells to go back into your hand. Also, there are a few ways around her "You Lose The Game" effect. Torpor Orb and Sundial of the Infinite are among the lowest CMC cards that get you around her effect. But any "You Can't Lose the Game Card", like Platinum Angel, will work. Thrull Wizard is another way of doing this. This deck has since removed it because it is a lot of mana to use to do nothing on your turn. But it is an option worth mentioning if you want to double down on Phage.

Depending on the course of the game some cards have some explosive potential, like Crypt of Agadeem tapping for 25 mana when the rats are in the grave or getting Phage in for lethal after a board wipe. It's extremely interesting to use and fun to play. Let me know what you think and if there are any cards I should consider.
