HOU UPDATE!!! 582 VOTES (Almost #3 Commander Deck) —July 22, 2017

HOUR OF DEVASTATION UPDATE!!!

After the last major update, there was an obvious loss in power with the inclusion of all the removal and the omission of the high CMC cards. The bottom line is that this deck does not care so much about high mana cost because of all the ramp, so the who cares about the AVG CMC of the deck!

After testing Blood Moon in this deck, it does more harm then good. Avenger just wins games.

Although Beast Within is a great removal spell, it was a real letdown in this deck. I drew that card a dozen times, but never cast it. The Hydra on the other hand is a card that I am always happy to cast to get a Utility land.

The Grip is on the same boat as Within. Mana Crypt is finally going in because I got my hands on a Judge Promo.

Lair was really really bad. After thinking long and hard about Hour of Promise, I realized that it really is a staple for every green deck, even with the EXTREME flavor fail ( card, with a God, that makes zombies... hurts my soul...)

Although Nissa's Ult is great, it was to slow. Ramunap is a godsend for this deck!

Just some extra ways to protect my wincons.

OK. got to do some play testing with Cream of the Crop. It's the synergy with Elemental Bond is INSANE.

(I had Ghirapur Orrery, Exploration, Ashnod's Altar and omnath in play also. and for context I played only one land this turn)

I had dropped a Boundless Realms (leaving 4 lands available) to net 13 basics, 13 elementals, and my choice of 13 cards tutored from my top five. grabbing all kinds of foolish combo pieces like: akromas memorial titania, scapeshift, splendid reclamation, e-wit, am-vigour, boseiju, and what ever else look fun!

The game ending play:Amulet of Vigor, Akroma's Memorial, Scapeshift, Splendid Reclamation (allowing my to grab all my remaining lands from my library, untapped), followed by Eternal Witness to grab Scapeshift, then the Titania, Protector of Argoth/Scapeshift combo for the overkill.

created a total of 88 5/5 elemental tokens in the process, without Doubling Seasons or Parallel Lives

IN SUMMARY: cream of the crop deserves a slot in this list. why? this deck has consistency issues if you fail to shuffle effectively. you get to choose Gas, removal, or that last combo piece you need to end the game or to shut someone down in a hurry

I'd keep that uvenwald hydra]handy on the side, it's a game ending beatstick on its own, and allows you to grab utility and counter countermagic lands to get around most blue control decks.

That said, Boseiju, Who Shelters All is EXTREMELY useful. Against inattentive players it can be used to bluff your way out of a counter spell, just have to be vocal about tapping boseiju and paying the life if you want to play one of your artifacts, enchantments, or planeswalkers. It's also relevant specifically to the end game since it prevents nasty nasty blue players from countering your big ramp spell

VexenX what are your thoughts on running City of Solitude?

Some interesting choices for the update. I have been feeling that Mina and Denn and Stalking Vengeance haven't really been pulling their weight in my list.

I will say, I think Blood Moon is a straight up bad choice. If the deck was primarily in red, then sure, but you're in green. A Blood Moon on the battlefield massively hurts your access to green mana, and makes all your fetches pointless, reducing how many landfall triggers you can get in a turn. Think about it this way, would you be okay if your lands were simply 14 forests and 29 mountains? Plus, blood moon does next to nothing against mono colour decks, meaning it can be a dead card a lot of the time. I agree with the idea of running more answers and removal, but I really think Blood Moon is a terrible fit for this deck.

Just to add onto that I do think you should be running Crop Rotation. Instant speed access to Yavimaya Hollow, Strip Mine, Gaea's Cradle, or even just a fetch land so you can get an extra couple landfall triggers is too good to pass up for just one mana.

I'm interested to hear how you like Kavu Lair in the deck. I playtested it for a while and found it gave some opponents too much gas. Mainly the Mayael the Anima and Kaalia of the Vast players in my meta.

Have you tried Vigor? Seems absolutely game breaking.

If you wanted to be fancy you could arguably sac a token and bolt your commander to add counters at instant speed for Commander damage.

I love this deck and own this exact same deck. Ill be making your suggested changes and testing it out too! thanks!

baddkaarma: Never thought about Greater Gargadon.. It is not bad, but a sac outlet limited to 10 uses is not very good for this deck most of the time. If you feel you could really use another sac-outlet, then I say go for it!

xEth0sx: Thank you for the support and upvote! It really does mean a lot! This deck is a ton of fun! I think the main Problem with Nissa's Renewal is it's high cmc...

thatguycrow: Thank you for clarifying the rule about the Horn! Made it that much easier not to include it in the deck.

Starsky2814: Dude, your deck looks VERY solid. It makes me happy that I was able to inspire another Om_rath player!!! There are a few cards in your list that I don't run, and it is mainly because of meta or just preference. Our decks are very similar. How does yours do in your meta?

feyn_do_alduin: That game sounded amazing! Om_rath has an amazing way of just going nuts out of nowhere! I am also giving Cream of the Crop a fair shot!

Spoosky and ROUROU: The great thing about Om_rath is that it is really hard to go wrong. Although I can't see myself running some of those cards in my list, does not mean that it would not work. A deck focused on land destruction and making your lands creatures could really be a thing though!

noctis366: Ill be honest, I think I might get City of Solitude... maybe next update. Seems good.

thatguycrow: I actually think Blood Moon is an All-Star. The only real downside is losing the use of fetchlands and Gaea's Cradle. It knocks more people out of the game, and because it is my card, I can chose when and if I want to cast it, depending on the situation at hand. It is in the mail, so I will let you know if it pans out. (The foil prices have never been this low, so it doesn't hurt to remove it later if I need to anyway).

Also... I REALLY want a foil Crop Rotation before I include it in the list... But the price jumps from $1.50 to $70!!! I am hoping there is a reprint in Iconic Masters that way there is another foil out there, which will drop the price of the original one!

alavaster: Ya, Kavu Lair is coming out... didn't read the card well enough... Not sure what is filling the void quite yet.

Dankey: The whole commander damage at instant speed seems pretty sweet! However, I am going to be hard pressed to add something above 4-5 cmc unless it is stand-alone bonkers. It is something I might have to tray out though. Ill keep my eyes open for a copy!

zaytsevi: Good to hear man! How is the deck treating you? Any cool stories???

BIG NEWS!!!

I am actually from Vegas (well, I live there now because of my assignment in the Air Force) and I am going to be at GRAND PRIX LAS VEGAS NEXT WEEK!!! I will not be doing any of the main events, because I will be spending most of my time trading and playing COMMANDER. If you wanted to meet up and play a few games, let me know! I will be hanging out with a few other friend that play commander, so the more the merrier!

yeah, after play testing, I have to agree with your earlier statement of Horn of Greed. it offers your opponents too much of an advantage in the early game.

VexenX,
Looks like you'll need to find room for Ramunap Excavator (aka Magus of the Crucible)

I actually have a fairly similar deck to what you had before your latest update. I don't run much in the way of mana dorks, but I was pretty entertained to see how similar our builds are. My deck has gotten to the point where people at my LGS actually refer people to me, when they're thinking of making an Omnath deck. Of your latest changes, I can agree with a couple of them, but I disagree with a few of them as well. I've been considering adding Blood Moon to my build for a while, and I'm curious how it'll work for you. Cream of the Crop is just as great as everyone's been saying. The card selection it provides is incredibly powerful. I've been Cyclonic Rifted, then come back to win the game the following turn, just because my position was so strong.

Stalking Vengeance has been on my chopping block several times, and keeps pulling itself off by winning games for me. Still might take it out at some point, though. I've been debating cutting World Breaker too, but it's a creature, so it can be tutored, and it can't be countered, so it's definitely come in very handy. It's an excellent way to deal with a control deck's Humility, regardless of their counterspells, which won me a tournament. As for Ulvenwald Hydra, it's been pretty great so far. Pulling out Gaea's Cradle, Yavimaya Hollow, or even just a Reliquary Tower or fetchland is a great benefit to a usually giant creature. It's also got reach, which can be relevant.

Avenger of Zendikar + Purphoros, God of the Forge is a combo that has won me a LOT of games. I run Tooth and Nail and Defense of the Heart almost solely to pull those out. Just recently, I managed to turn the tables on an Eldrazi player with a turn 4 Kozilek, Butcher of Truth by dropping Tooth and Nail entwined and winning the next turn. It's expensive, but generally affording it is not a problem, and it'll be game winning when you can. I advise the combo to basically every deck I see running , and people tend to agree after seeing what it can do.

I actually cut my Sol Ring a while ago, to try out a Null Rod, as artifact mana is far too prevalent in my playgroup. It also tended to be a dead draw late in the game, when I'd much prefer something like Nature's Lore. I cut Lightning Greaves a while back and added Steely Resolve, which I've found to be pretty successful. With the Greaves, instant speed removal can still remove Omnath, but Resolve gets rid of that window. And I rarely made use of the haste. The protection on Titania and my tokens is also welcome. Every so often, someone will play an elemental which also benefits from Resolve, but it rarely seems to happen, unless I'm playing against another elemental deck.

Figured that I'd just share some tidbits of my experience with an Omnath deck, and this post got way too long. Either way, your deck is awesome. If I had my decklist on here, I'd link it, but it's late and I don't. I'll be going to Vegas with some friends as well, so maybe I'll see you there.

Maybe since Kavu Lair isn't the best since it helps your opponent, you can bring back Ulvenwald Hydra since you stated it might return. If not, maybe now's the time to put in Mana Crypt since you planned on including it at some point. Another interesting shout I think would be Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury, her removal and draw abilities would support your new inclusions, and her first ability accelerates your mana while giving you chump blockers if needed.

the new nissa is alright, the extra two lands untapping in the lategame-- even the mid-game is a pretty substantial advantage.

Hey everyone! Some changes are coming soon! I played a couple dozen games during GP Vegas, an I think the power level of the deck was hurt a ton by the changes I made recently. Not every choice was bad of course, but I will go though it all.

Also, I was wondering if you guys could help me with another list (this is the first time I have asked this before). I am excited about The Scarab God , and have posted my prototype decklist on Tappedout. Read the deck description for more info. Also, please Upvote so that others can see my list. Thank you guys!

The new Crucible of Worlds on a stick Ramunap Excavator seems pretty good, you can tutor for it with either chord or green sun.

Love the update! Added a few of the new cards to my version of this deck, keep it up! This playstyle does very well!

VexenX, I was looking to update my list after it has being stagnate for over a year. I saw where you did not like the majority of changes you made. Is there a chance an update could be done just listing the returning cards and what they would be replacing?
