Null-R Infectblade

Commander / EDH

DigiDylan

Right now, this list is limited to cards I own. Noble Hierarch would be very good in this list, but I don't actually own one on account of playing grixis in modern.

Welcome to Atraxa infectblade! Because I can't count to 21 on my fingers.

I've been playing stoneblade in commander in one form or another for about a year now, and it's become my favorite deck to play. Last summer, I tried to create a stoneblade list in these colors using General Tazri as the commander (as the only 5c commander I could cast without red). However, the power level wasn't quite there, and the deck really needed a strong commander. C16 was announced to be 4 color, and I decided I'd move the deck to the back burner in case the Null-R commander was good for the strategy.

It was.

Atraxa is an incredibly efficient creature; she passes the vanilla text AND has flying (evasion!), vigilance, deathtouch and lifelink. She's a lot like a bigger Jenara, Asura of War (the go-to stoneblade general in french), but she gives us access to black and incidentally lets us proliferate at each end step.

Here's the game plan: ramp on 2. Cast Atraxa. Suit her up, then give her infect with Grafted Exoskeleton, Corrupted Consciousness, or (most optimally) Phyresis for a surprise swing-for-10.

Interestingly, 9 poison is just as good as 10 in this deck, as we can kill a player with 9 poison on our end step with Atraxa's proliferate trigger. However, rather than giving Atraxa 5 more power, it's much easier to give her 1 extra power and double strike. Rafiq does that by himself.

Now let's talk about the elephant in the room; the lack of juicy proliferate targets. Ideally, you'd like to proliferate every permanent on your board to optimize the value from her trigger. In order to do that, you'd need to play a lot of sub-optimal permanents. So, as Atraxa players, we strive to create a balance between proliferate triggers and sub-optimal permanents.

Right now, we can hit the following:
Aether Hub's energy
Gemstone Mine's counters
Lux Cannon's charge counters
Pentad Prisms's charge counters
Coalition Relic's charge counters
Umezawa's Jitte's charge counters
Loyalty counters on our walkers (JTMS, JVP, Tezzeret, and Kaya)
Lore counters on Mind Unbound (surprisingly juicy)
+1/+1 counters on Fathom Mage
+1/+1 counters on any creature with Juniper Order Ranger and Micky

I've looked at the various storage lands/vivid lands/tap for 2 counter lands, but I thought coming into play tapped or producing colorless mana wasn't worth the upside. If you have experience of these, and I'm missing out on some sweet value, let me know.

I also included Meren and CybErzuri at first to proliferate experience counters, but Meren's just sort of meh in a deck that's not built around her, and Rafiq did what I wanted CybErzuri to do, but better.

Aether Hub is included but not Tendou Ice Brice because I'm still not sure that the downside of having a colorless land is worth the upside of having another command tower when our commander's out.

Lux Cannon may be too cute to function, but the upside of an artifact that vindicates every other turn is probably good? Especially when clearing away blockers for Atraxa's lethal swing.

Speaking of Atraxa in combat; lifelink is great. We can use Sylvan Library and Necropotence to turn lifegain into card draw. Necropotence is 4x as efficient at it than Sylvan Library, but also 3x harder to cast than the library. Luckily, we can usually support triple black with out mana fixing artifacts, but if we can't we also have Urborg.

Where there's Urborg, there's also Cabal Coffers. Expedition Map helps us find this combo (as well as any other utility land we need), but don't be afraid to tutor for one piece if you have the other with Vampiric or Demonic Tutor. As the deck has a large amounts of colorless cards, the combo lets us dump most of our hand.

I feel like everything else included is pretty standard for this strategy, but I'll always answer any questions about card choices, and I'd love any feedback you can give me!
