Maybeboard

Gameplay Mission: Control threats on the board with cheap instants and sorceries as you ping your opponents with damage from Niv-Mizzet. Use Niv’s card draw ability to constantly replenish your hand while you make deals and use politics to decide who and what to target. Fill up your graveyard and hang onto wheels for big late-game effects.

Power Cards (>$10): None

Sleeper Cards: Clout of the Dominus, Teferi’s Ageless Insight, Mystic Reflection, Arcane Denial, Asinine Antics

During Game

Mizzix's Mastery: "Exile target card that's an instant or sorcery spell from your graveyard. For each card exiled this way, copy it, and you may cast the copy without paying its mana cost. Exile Mizzix's Mastery."

Look for opportunities to ping creatures with Niv when they take other sources of damage

Don't cast removal spells as soon as a threat enters the battlefield - opponents might choose to attack one another

Be careful not to make enemies, but be OK to respond when someone comes at you

Consider using Aetherize or Aetherspouts when other creatures attack an opponent -after- combat damage step

Use Step Through to tutor for H Prodigy, Veyran, or Vadrix

Stats

26 instants + 12 sorceries

Vadrix and Goblin Electromancer's ramp effects can help with 82% of the instants and sorceries (31 out of 38)

2:1 ratio of instants to sorceries (original deck had closer to 50/50)

Average mana value is slightly overstated since some cards can be cast for less than their stated cost (e.g. Step Through, Blasphemous Act, Wizard's Retort); a few will be played with their Overload or Kicker cost

3 lands that ETB tapped = 8% of total

1 colorless non-fetch land (3% of total)

Deck Notes

Focused primarily on instants vs. sorceries because of how much the game can change on each opponent's turn

Looked for spells that are cheaper (mana), better (value), or faster (instants) than original selections

Uses lots of ramp to help with Niv's casting cost and because available mana for spells will typically be more limited than the number of cards in hand

Currently running 36 lands instead of 37-40 since Niv's card draw helps with land drops in mid to late game

Commander's Quarters has lots of wheel effects, infinite loops, and deathtouch combos for Niv Mizzet that aren't included in this deck

Deck also doesn't include Reliquary Tower or similar cards to keep focus on cheaper 1-2 CMC spells; deck also has spells that benefit from discarding instants and sorceries into graveyard (e.g. Octavia, Rise from the Tides)

Doesn't currently use tutors for instants & sorceries since Niv's card draw can be used to cycle through cards to find the right answer in most cases

Some spells don't work with doublers (e.g. counterspells) but deck isn't heavily focused on doubling / copying

Card Notes

Niv's damage effect can also help with creature and planeswalker removal

Counterspells can be used for enchantments or commander protection

Damage spells and Niv can be used for addl creature or planeswalker removal; bounce spells are another version of removal

Mana Geyser used to enable multiple spells on a single turn or one large X spell

Mystic Reflection can be used to copy a good creature or to turn opponents' next creature(s) into bad ones

Aetherspouts can be used for a single attacker b/c it gets around hexproof (especially helpful against Voltron decks)
