When I drafted Gatecrash Pre-release and got Nightveil Sprecter, I really wanted to build a deck around him. I decided to pursue that dream and built a deck that I wanted to do 1 thing: be able to play the cards stolen with Nightveil Sprecter. Qucikly I learned that the deck needed to do something else effectively: hit an oppoenet with Nightveil Sprecter. Over the years, more and more removal has worked its way into the main deck. I also have added better and better lands, extort has been a main stay for utility I could count on when I can't count on my opponent doing anything. Among my friend group it is known as "The Original EDH Deck." Lots and lots of multiplayer wins, uber fun. I typically don't buy singles for decks but most of the shocklands were 1 mass purchase, otherwise its gifts, limited, drafting, buying boxes, and trading.
