New School Mana Burn

Commander / EDH BRG (Jund)

drwombat

Just something I've been tinkering with. I love the idea of bringing back mana burn and the fact that Yurlok gives other players extra mana (at times they will be least able to use them, like when they could only cast instants) seemed like a totally fun 'new' way to do this. A number of creatures and artifacts are in there just to be able to untap and reuse Yurlok's ability. There are also a bunch of mana dorks and such to ramp up faster and get more out of his ability while keeping my own land use to a minimum. I included no infinite loops that I'm aware of (I just don't find them fun in casual play), but a number of ways to just add more mana during a turn - pay 1 to activate Yurlok of Scorch Thrash, untap him for free with Seeker of Skybreak while still carrying 3 mana. Activate him again so you have 5, untap him with Thousand-Year Elixir which costs one (net 4) and then activate him again (now you have 6 floating). Spend 3 on Jandor's Saddlebags (down to 3), activate him again, back up to 5 floating. Use the 5 on a Frenzied Tilling and you get a 2-land advantage - someone loses one and you gain one. Meanwhile all of your opponents are floating {b}{b}{b}{r}{r}{r}{g}{g}{g} and it's during your turn so they can pretty much only use it on Instants or abilities (or nothing if you have out City of Solitude. Burn! And even if all that results in 5 mana burn hitting each opponent, that's pretty cool. And cost you only the 1 mana you tapped to start all this.

If you're lucky enough to have Exquisite Blood out also, and it's a 4 person game, you just gained 15 life for your trouble as well!

In an ideal world :)

Haha.

Anyway. Meant to be fun and create all kinds of havoc at the table keeping track of everyone's unspent mana you gave them. Power Surge and Citadel of Pain further punish players for not using enough mana of their own in addition to what you give them. A handful of discard spells make it harder for opponents to have anything left to play when you load them up with mana.

Just make sure you spend yours, since the burn can hit you, too.

I also tried to use as many original (old old) frame cards as possible in homage to this being about an old mechanic: mana burn. But obviously, since even the commander himself isn't old frame, plenty of new frame cards were used.
