Maybeboard

First things first, I'd like to thank TNTmage7 and petr23g4 for helping with the deckbuilding process. This is my first homebrew cEDH deck and their input was greatly appreciated. Petr23g4 helped refine the deck after I'd already put out a basis and the original deck plan was created by myself and TNTMage7.

Another shoutout goes to ShaperSavant, it's their Opus Thief decklist that I'm taking the general idea for the cEDH primer for, so that's a huge help.

This deck focuses on two combo lines, with a backup third line in case our first two get shut down. It's an adaptive combo deck that uses powerful enablers such as Hermit Druid and Protean Hulk to be able to quickly win the game, while also having some stax pieces to push the opponents farther away from their wins.

Since our deck runs a lot of creatures, we're able to consistently use creature-based stax pieces that hurt different things our opponents can do. Something like an Aven Mindcensor or a Linvala, Keeper of Silence can shut opponents out of the game very quickly and easily.

The commander, of course, is Nethroi, Apex of Death. Nethroi is not necessarily the greatest commander, seeing as he costs 7 mana to mutate. However, he's a great backup plan because he can pull basically all of the combo pieces needed out of the graveyard if certain stuff gets shut down.

Generally, what you want to do in a game goes as follows:

  • Ramp using our elf package and the few mana rocks

  • Tutor Protean Hulk into the graveyard

  • Use Necromancy, Apprentice Necromancer, or Wake the Dead to reanimate hulk and sacrifice it, tutoring the Hulk line for the win.

  • If that fails, tutor Hermit Druid and activate to put the druid line into the graveyard. Make sure you have disruption for opponents' grave hate if you try this.

  • Set up stax pieces if all else fails and try to wait for the final backup combo.

  • Combo Line #1: The Protean Hulk Line

  • Tutor Protean Hulk into the graveyard. Then, using Necromancy, Apprentice Necromancer, or Wake the Dead to recur and then sac the Hulk, fetch up Karmic Guide and Viscera Seer/Carrion Feeder. The Karmic Guide ETB trigger brings back Protean Hulk, which you then sacrifice to tutor for Saffi Eriksdotter, Blood Artist, and another value creature, usually Grand Abolisher. This allows you to loop sacrifices of Karmic Guide, activating Saffi Eriksdotter every time Karmic Guide is sacrificed, which then allows you to recur Saffi. Each time, Blood Artist will trigger, which ends up killing your opponents.

Quick Disclaimer: This line is VERY volatile. If someone disrupts the plan after the Hermit Druid has already triggered, you will likely deck yourself. Only play it if you've got the necessary protection for the combo.

This line involves activating Hermit Druid's ability and milling the entire deck into your graveyard. After this, the plan is activating the flashback ability of Dread Return, sacrificing the druid and 2 mana dorks you're likely to have out. Dread Return should target Reveillark. Then, cast Cabal Therapy, also for its flashback cost, sacrificing Reveillark which recurs Karmic Guide and Viscera Seer/Carrion Feeder. The Karmic Guide trigger brings back Reveillark. You then sacrifice the Karmic Guide and Reveillark, the latter recurring Karmic Guide and Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat. Then you can infinitely sacrifice and bring back Karmic Guide and Reveillark, dealing infinite damage to your opponents.

This combo is our last resort, backup combo if our first two combos get destroyed. It's tough to tutor because it can't be fetched with Hulk or recursion spells. It involves Heliod, Sun-Crowned and Walking Ballista. Heliod gives Walking Ballista lifelink, and it gains a counter whenever it deals damage, making it deal infinite damage with lifelink just by removing counters from Walking Ballista.
