I run a Nekusar EDH deck. So I am always happy to help a fellow Nek player.

First thing, in your description, you mention that he deals commander damage with the draw effects... That is actually not true. If you plan of dealing draw damage, you have to do the whole 40 damage.

This is actually not hard if you dedicate the entire deck to doing just that. Take mine for example, One Fucked Up Carnie Game. Non-Budget cards aside, the deck aims to ramp into a couple pain permanents and a wheel. Inside the deck, there are a few REALLY broken combos to toy around with.

Another problem, Day's Undoing does not actually help you do ANY damage. I tried it out, and the clause at the end of the text on the card states that damage wears off, meaning nothing happens, you pretty much refill everyones hand and pass the turn. I changed it out for a copy of Dark Deal instead.

Have you tried running any "fork" Effects? Not only can you copy a wheel spell, but you can also hold them up as counters in the event someone tries to counter your stuff. You copy the counter and choose the original counter as the target.

As far as card quality improvements? I would have to know your budget. Then I can advise good spells and creatures.

Let me know.

gnarlicide - I actually did not know about the commander damage rule, but I did just look it up, you are correct... Also, good catch on Day's Undoing. Fork effects are probably going to hop in here now. Let me do a little editing. I can tag you again once I've put in the edits. As a guideline for budget, how about we say don't suggest stuff over about $10-15, and keep the number of cards in the price range as low as possible.

Alrighty, sounds good. I actually can send you a link later to the best Nekusar Primer on the planet.

It lists all good card for the deck, to include budget friendly ones.

I will post later. Also, I have some extra Nekusar things that you might be interested in. Since I have so many, I have no problem with just sending them to you.

That would be incredibly generous gnarlicide! List is updated with some quick edits. If you can link me that primer, that would be great! Thank you so much for the help!

here you go:

http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/commander-edh/multiplayer-commander-decklists/575956-nekusar-the-mindrazer-hail-to-the-king-baby

there are some convenient drop downs for the type of Nek build you want, or try to want, and then further down, there is a card choices menu. The drop downs will reveal every card for that section that is relevant, some are more budget friendly than others, so you may have to look them up. Example: Tainted Pact is more budget friendly than say, Imperial Seal. Just a thought.

My list started as a budget build, since I wasn't sure if I would like EDH, (I play a lot of modern and legacy). But after a while it grew on me, and through my MTG "allowance", aggressive trades and an extremely cutthroat EDH meta... my Nekusar deck has reaches its current form. Truth be told, I plan on adding Timetwister to the deck sometime within the year. It would also add to my goal of owning a P9 card AND be awesome for the deck.

gnarlicide - Thanks so much for that primer, I bookmarked it so I can get back to it as the deck develops. I think the style I'm looking to build is more combo-control. I don't mind if the set-up takes a little while as long as it means I can kill pretty quickly once I am ready. Added another tutor, cut down on creatures that don't help me achieve my objective as much, and added a little bit of extra draw power and pain. I will be heading off to college in about a month so I'll meet a bunch of new people to check out trades with, so that will probably benefit me since I have trade value, just can't spend a lot of money on the deck.

No problem, man. I used to be that way too, (inre: "I just can't spend that much money...") but Like I said, I can toss a few decent NEK cards your way. I have to go through what I have, If you don't mind sending me an Email address on my profile page, I can email you to get your address to send you some stuff.

I am not using them. When I find the cards I am looking for, I will comment here with a list of them to see if you would want them.

Okay, here is what I have that, if you would like them:

Rooftop Storm, to recast Nek for free!

Fact or Fiction, Helps dig for stuff.

Ponder, also helps dig.

Brainstorm, also for digging.

Nim Deathmantle, saves Nek in a pinch.

Dark Ritual, good for ramp.

Hinder, decent counter.

Whirlpool WarriorF, wheel on a dude.

Underground River, decent land.

Kederekt Parasite, Pain creature.

Leyline of Anticipation, its pretty good.

Dream Fracture, another good counter

Forbid, a recurrable counter.

Megrim, good for pain with discard.

Thran Dynamo, Solid Mana Rock.

Let me know if you would be interested in grabbing any of these. Don't worry about sending anything in return, these are all extras in my stash. Just send me a message on my page with your email, so I can get your address to mail these out sometime within the week.

If you're playing in a competitive meta, please don't underestimate the power of a well placed Corrupted Conscience or Grafted Exoskeleton. I used to run Glistening Oil as a removal spell.

My old list is still Nekusar's Craze. We weren't very competitive so the Infect isn't listed; instead, I put in the cards I wanted to run if we got more competitive.

Karns_Pyromancer - Our group frowns heavily upon infect in EDH. I will look at your list to see other possibilities though, so thank you for posting it!

Lol, I ran Tainted Strike and Phyresis for my infect package. My LGS's EDH crowd is literally a bunch of legacy/vintage spikes with degenerate commander decks. 5 player games usually last about 25 minutes before someone combos out. I had to make my Nekusar deck to be able to go infinite wheels or infect on turn 5 reliably.

It is possible to make a retarded fast and degenerate Nek deck, but once you go into that dark place... theres no turning back. As of a month ago, I am no longer welcome to play EDH on thursdays... apparently thats when the newer players duke it out of edh staples.

gnarlicide - Yeah, as much as my group all play to win, EDH is as much a social thing as a competitive game, so we like to run decks that won't end the game so quickly so we can sit around and just enjoy having some time to do whatever we want. It's laid back yet still competitive which is a ton of fun.

I noticed you're missing Time Spiral, Time Reversal and Diminishing Returns. These are almost mandatory in a Nekusar deck.

August 8, 2015 6:19 a.m.

gnarlicide says... #16

The "up to" clause on Diminishing Returns makes me feel like it would backfire.

August 8, 2015 9:28 a.m.

DarkRequiem says... #17

Up to them to enter top deck mode... Against Nekusar they can't keep an empty end if they want to win. Even if they draw just a few cards (3-4) they'll take damage and stay back in the game. Meanwhile you should be drawing into another wheel effect...

I'd go with Timetwister myself but that's one hell of an expensive card. For the low cmc, Returns does what's needed to be done. I'd give it a try if I were you. Besides, most of the time people don't even notice the "up to" close and just draw those 7 cards all the same. ;)

August 8, 2015 11:51 a.m.

Time Spiral is another good one to that effect.

August 8, 2015 1:44 p.m.

DarkRequiem says... #19

Already suggested it along with Time Reversal. ;)

August 8, 2015 2:16 p.m.

evncrbch says... #20

Time Spiral is a good effect, I am aware of it, but for now is excluded for the same reason as Wheel of Fortune. The other two seem decent, will shove them in the maybeboard until I figure out exactly where they will fit. Thanks guys!

One thing you can easily remove is Elixir of Immortality.

August 8, 2015 3:08 p.m.

evncrbch says... #22

Wasn't sure if it was worth it to recycle wheels and other resources that may get destroyed. Was testing it out. Not worth the slot?

August 8, 2015 4:42 p.m.

DarkRequiem says... #23

Nope. Returns and Reversal already do that recycle you need. And they hurt your opponent, making them the better option.

If you need life that much, Vampiric Link is way better.

August 8, 2015 7:24 p.m.

evncrbch says... #24

Yeah, life wasn't the reason for the include. Good point, thank you.

Welcome.

And if you feel like it, give it a look at my own Nekusar deck: Nekusar's Nightmares
