Sideboard

Maybeboard

A Grixis-Colored () deck, built to a competitive meta. The deck aims to have access to a turn two win, and is led by Nekusar, the Mindrazer.

This deck was requested by NoobNoob275 so that I might have a more competitively tuned deck, in light of the fact that our playgroup has recently acquired much stronger archetypes.

I have previously built Nekusar with mill, discard, and damage trigger themes. It wasn't a very competitive deck and it was one of my earliest Commander decks. I featured stuff like Fraying Sanity, Glimpse the Unthinkable, and Shadow Kin.

This deck will be much different, and I aim to keep my core focus on Wheel & Deal mechanics.

I think at some point after filling up my maybeboard, that I'll have some sort of explanation for the plethora of synergies and tactics available to Nekusar.

Nekusar is a legs kicked up, hanging out kind of commander for me. So I will be using him for a good time that occasionally might win when the wheels (no pun intended) fall off.

(taken from the Fandom Wiki page)

'Nekusar, the Mindrazer is a legendary zombie wizard from an unknown plane..'

..who has long been theorized (albeit shoddily) to have been from the plane of Fiora.

If you accredit the fact that..

'Nekusar is a former king who schemed to retain his power even after death. In life, he was an unpopular ruler with many enemies and was obsessed with the machinations of his court and threats to his reign..'

..the description we're given by WoTC is that Fiora is a devious plane, resembling New Capenna among a royal setting.

'His enemies speculate that his brutal death and subsequent rebirth have been Nekusar's plan all along.'

And if this is the case, then it's a definitive flavor win if he's from the plane of Fiora.

(I guess a tinfoil hat could be considered a crown..)

While I don't normally create a deck with the express purpose of winning in these fashions, these are the ways that have been proven to hold up in the current landscape of Edh.

Infinite Wheel and with Nekusar on the field, damage.

The only true "mill" win, near-infinite mill.

This combo can be resolved on turn one if you're lucky and holding a Christmas hand, using Tainted Pact to exile your library, then casting Thassa's Oracle.

Further Panels may be added in the future, or I may opt to use Updates to detail further changes.

Updates Add

It's been a long while since I've touched this list, and even longer since I've seen a card printed that could impact how the overall deck would function. My close friend NoobNoob275 and I have been awaiting our lists to arrive so that we could test our decks out.

Since then, Murders at Karlov printed out what will be referred to from here as 'Surveil Lands'. In this list, the appropriate colors are Thundering Falls, Raucous Theater, and Undercity Sewers. While inherently they don't seem to provide much to the competitive realm of Magic, surveil has been exploited for reanimate effects from the 'yard, and these lands promise to promote those tactics within their respective wheelhouse (no pun intended) and I personally believe the strongest combo for this is going to come from the Grixis shard. ()

Vengeful Tracker is another card printed in Murders, and promises a candidate to punish your opponents who rely on fast cracking artifacts for mana. At 2 damage a pop, it's like a Treasure-focused Guttersnipe. I need to find a slot for this, so if anyone has a recommendation, leave a comment below.

Another card that's on my radar is going to be Long Goodbye because I find the inability to get around 'can't be countered' is amazing.

I've been using the maybeboard as a way to detail cutesy cards and relevant answers to common problems, kind of like a FAQ/Inb4 type list of cards to acknowledge whether or not it's been thought about, considered, discussed, etc.
