1st major update —Sept. 24, 2018

After some play I noticed the deck is pretty fast and can swing for a lot of damage quickly, but due to that 2 problems emerge.

  • 1st - I run out of hand pretty quickly, most times after playing Isao and pumping him up I would be playing top deck until I got some draw, but took too long usually;

  • 2nd - Due to how fast I can do a lot of damage I also become a targeted quickly and I was lacking blockers/protection so I would usually die after killing 1 opponent, sometimes even before I could do it.

Due to these 2 problems I had to include fog effects and more card draw in the deck, in order to do that I had to cut in some of the pump cards, I tried to cut on the weakest ones the deck seems to look better now, but again only after some playtesting I can find out.

+1! Love your list a ton!

How about trying out Fireshrieker? It doubles you damage and sword triggers!

SynergyBuild Thank you :)

Yes I thought about adding Fireshrieker but instead I put Grappling Hook which does the same but for a bit more mana I can also select which creature I wanna kill in combat, and since green doesn't have much creature removal this equipment can be used as such if needed.

Fair point, I respect the decision!

SynergyBuild No worries :)

Any other suggestion in your mind?

Grafted Exoskeleton is insane damage output, but I don't know if you are into infect.

SynergyBuild I don't mind infect, but in my playgroup we have infect killing at 20 counters, so it is basicly the same as commander damage. So I usually don't find it worth to focus on, unless the whole deck is about it.

Oathkeeper, Takeno's Daisho could be pretty great and on flavor

August 4, 2018 3:46 p.m.

Tarzunga says... #10

Rogue_Toaster Yes it could but Isao doesn't really need it, he already regenerates so he doesn't need the first ability provided by Oathkeeper, and the second ability will only help my opponents to remove Isao from the game by destroying the equipment while one of the reasons that I have him as a commander is how hard it is to remove him from the game due to the regenerate. So despite being good in flavor there are better options for the deck. Like Tatsumasa, the Dragon's Fang that gives more stats, can create 1 blocker if needed (2 if Doubling Season is in play), and is still good for flavor.

But thank you for the suggestion nonetheless :)

Hey man, I just want to say I love this deck idea. This will probably be my next brew so major thanks for that.

I might have more suggestions later, but first you might want to consider Increasing Savagery. The Flashback value is huge for if Isao gets exiled/bounced from the first cast.

It looks like you're leaning heavily into Trample vs. Unblockable, but check out Suspicious Bookcase. It's one of my favorite new cards.

Hello BjarneAlmighty. Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it and wanna try it out. Regarding Increasing Savagery it is already in the deck. However I didn't know about Suspicious Bookcase, I'll consider it for the deck, thank you. :)

Holy cow, I can't believe I missed that.

A couple more cards I liked in my most recent mono-G counters deck. Llanowar Reborn, Primal Vigor if you don't mind the global effect, Opal Palace, Tajuru Preserver, and Beast Within.

BjarneAlmighty thanks again. I don't know how the hell did I forget about Opal Palace... I have some of those at home and didn't put on the deck for some reason... The other suggestions are quite nice too, I'll try to find a place for them.

Wintermoon, no worries haha. I figured you had considered most of the things I suggested, but I often forget some of the simple inclusions too :)

+1 for the Vagabond reference as well as a unique and interesting commander choice for a Voltron strategy. My Toshiro Umezawa deck is also thematically very inspired by Vagabond for the flavor wins. Well done!

I'd like to see what concept you have in mind for Fumiko the Lowblood. I'd be more than happy to collaborate and help out with your deck building. It looks like you're well on your way to having a samurai commander in every color, so don't give up on it just yet! If only there was a blue samurai too haha!

Hello DangoDaikazoku, thank you for your comment. Yeah I am trying to make one of each color, each with a different playstyle but Fumiko proves to be the hardest challenge so far. But I think I have figured out what to do, once it is finished I'll let you know if you want. :)

Regarding the blue samurai, yes sadly we don't have one BUT there is Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive. She is not a samurai but she is a descendant of the two most badass samurai in Mtg lore, so she will make do. It's the closest we have and I already have in mind a theme for the deck.

Glad to know you also built a Toshiro deck, I'll check it out! My Toshiro deck, as explained above, is becoming a reanimator deck, and altho it isn't what one expects when looking at Toshiro, I think it works quite well and I like to play it that way.

I can't wait to see what you have in store for Fumiko! I just took a look at your other samurai decks and I must say I have to put together a rendition of my own for these commanders! I've been looking into building an Aikido style deck for quite some time and Opal-Eye looks like a lot of fun for that role.

I've played Toshiro Umezawa in Voltron, Reanimator, and Spellslinger archetypes, and they're all viable playstyles. Right now my Toshi deck is spellslinger with heavy removal and a reanimator subtheme and I really enjoy how it plays even though it's not nearly as powerful or competitive as it could be. I just love how versatile he is, and it's not like he is incredibly vital to have on the board to achieve your gameplan either. There are lots of ways to play him and he will always be one of my favorite commanders because he was the first commander I ever built around!

DangoDaikazoku well I can tell you the Fumiko deck will be chaotic, will be all about constant fighting, double damage and stuff like that. Yeah Aikido is a fun playstyle, you just chill in your seat and when someone comes at you, you say no and slap them in the face. The most satisfying thing is someone swinging at you with 21 or more commander damage and redirecting the damage for that player, making him kill himself.

And I agree about Toshiro, I even said something similar yesterday, he might not be a top tier commander but he can be built in different ways, which is a good thing. Mine started as voltron with removal to protect myself, but it felt "empty", like it could be more interesting, that's when I realized the synergy between Toshiro's ability with removal and reanimaton and decided to take that route, so now I am changing it slowly, soon I will have all the voltron stuff removed from the deck, and focus it on reanimation. The only voltron card I will be Hatred, it is one of my favourite cards and can be used twice (if I have enough life to pay).

And I know what you mean, my first deck was with Talrand, Sky Summoner but Toshiro was built soon after, being my second build.
