This deck is inspired by the popular standard-format Gyruda decks which used cloning mechanics, during the time of Ikoria. Despite the companion restriction, the deck is fast, interactive, and resiliant, and actually seems to translate well into EDH.

At first, this deck was generally more focused on mill strategies, with cards like Mesmeric Orb, Mindcrank, Dimir Guildmage, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, etc. But most of these turned out to be too weak, as they either don't actually do enough to matter, or by the time they do matter, Gyruda is already chaining off to win, and they just become repetitive and unnecessary. These kind of mill support cards were ultimately replaced with ramp, cards which are more synergistic with Gyruda in other ways, or cards which present more of an immediate threat in general.

Gyruda's ability is often enough to mill out decks on it's own. Failing this, it also enables a large board presence by recurring threats, and can also just win by attacking.

Overview Show

The main goal here is to cast Gyruda as soon as possible, then chain together clones from your library via Gyruda's ETB, copy Gyruda, and repeat. This can result in totally milling out opponents on your turn so that they lose on their draw. There are several ways to get extra value during this process, which will be addressed below.

Muldrotha actually plays more of a support for Gyruda, who plays more of the commander roll. Muldrotha can restart the clone chain by playing clones from the graveyard, as well as recover other important synergy cards that get milled with Gyruda, and can also recur Gyruda, should it go to the graveyard.

The ramp in this deck consists mainly of 2 CMC creatures, with only the most effective artifacts. The reason for this is to decrease to odds of a Gyruda trigger wiffing and hitting no creatures. The lands consist of shock, fetch, pain, and rainbow lands, as well as some basics - nothing special...

This deck is kind of a glass cannon, in that if Gyruda gets exiled or otherwise disabled, the main strategy - cloning Gyruda - is not really valid anymore. In this case, clones can be used to copy your own creatures, or opponents creatures, and continue on with a more grindy and stompy game plan, relying on Muldrotha to outlast opponents, and/or continue to mill in other ways.

Key Cards and Interactions Show

Thassa's Oracle serves as a win condition if we are milled out, and can be recurred from the graveyard via Muldrotha.

Mortuary will mill out everyone's deck once a Gyruda trigger has resolved, as long as Sakashima of a Thousand Faces in not on the battlefield. When a clone enters the battlefield as Gyruda, Gyruda's trigger is put on the stack and the Legendary Rule is applied. This results in one of the Gyrudas needing to be sacrificed, which will then trigger Mortuary while Gyruda's trigger is still on the stack. Mortuary will resolve first, putting the sacrificed Gyruda on top of library, then Gyruda's trigger will resolve, putting the sacrificed Gyruda into play again, creating a loop, and milling out every deck if you want. At this point either just pass turn and watch opponents lose on their draw, or recur Thassa's Oracle for the win. This process can be stopped at any time by simply not recurring a clone, thereby stopping Gyruda's trigger.

Effects that copy Gyruda's ability are very strong, and can often result in total mill off just one trigger. These cards include Panharmonicon, Nightmare Shepherd, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, and Dual Nature.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed double up on ETB clone effects with persist. Also Triskelion combos with Triskelion

Titans' Nest is very powerful in this deck as it can provide tons of mana, provided there are lots of cards in the graveyard.

Kodama of the East Tree and Soul of the Harvest are both great to have on the battlefield while chaining clones, and are explosive together.

Animate Dead and Dance of the Dead serve as a way to efficiently recur large creatures or combo pieces. Kederekt Leviathan can also be continuously be recurred from the graveyard with these enchantments by bouncing them to hand when the Leviathan ETBs, thus returning the Leviathan to the graveyard, ready to repeat over and over. Combined with Gyruda and 8 mana, this can result in a bounce and mill lock.

Altar of Dementia can help to mill opponents libraries. It can also save important creatures like Gyruda from being exiled. Zombies created with Undead Alchemist can be sacrificed to the altar, and can lead to long mill-chains. Creatures with ETB effects can be sacrificed, and then re-animated to re-trigger ETBs as well.
