Modern Mono-Green Stompy. Updated. Imo, the best budget deck for the format. $50 maindeck, under $100 for the full 75, and can actually give you a chance to win small/mid-sized tournaments.
The Mono-Green Stompy list is pretty tight (although it just loosened-up a bit with Eldraine). The number of Experiment One/Pelt Collectors can be anywhere from 4-8 (usually 4 or 6 at any ratio you prefer as they both have advantages/disadvantages over the other), and the number of Geists and Scavenging Oozes can vary (some people use Ooze only in the board or even not at all). Acceptable swaps for some number of these cards are
Rhonas the Indomitable
,
Ghalta, Primal Hunger
,
Leatherback Baloth
,
Dungrove Elder
,
Garruk's Companion
,
Groundbreaker
, and now
Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig
- just keep in mind that all of the 3-drops will slow the deck down (except Groundbreaker, but it raises other issues). You do not want to go over 3 mana, though. Lately, some stompy players are swapping some number of Militants out for
Hexdrinker
. I considered this silly until the Looting ban, but it could be okay now. Personally, I'm keeping all 4 Militants in for now, though, as I see their effect as more beneficial than the rare moments I'd get time/mana to level a Hexdrinker. Depending on your preference/meta, you can include removal in the maindeck or the sideboard (primarily Dismember, but sometimes an additional
Prey Upon
or similar card is added if need be). There are too many great cards for the sideboard for me to list them all here, but I think I have included a solid example.
EDIT: Updated for Eldraine.
Syr Faren, the Hengehammer
has worked out very well in Pioneer so I've added him here, too. I've also added a couple utility lands to go along with him. The added pain lands, in addition to the prevalence of Burn lately, pushed me to add 2
Life Goes On
to the sideboard. I generally prefer to avoid using dedicated lifegain cards in linear aggro decks such as this (over something like Finks or Baloth - or any number of non-lifegain cards like Veil of Summer, Damping Sphere, or Pithing Needle), but for reasons previously mentioned I believe this configuration may be for the best at this time.
I am not completely sold on
Once Upon a Time
yet for this deck, as the list is already very tight and I am not sure what I would want to drop for it. First guess would be Geist, Scooze, maybe a land or two, but for now I'm not running it just due to it being really crappy past turn 1 in this deck (and I rarely have much of a problem with opening hands here). It also raises the deck's cost significantly, although that wouldn't matter to me IF I thought it was for the best. But I am keeping it in mind.
