I noticed Sol Ring and Nevinyrral's Disk are over $1. Black Sun's Zenith is only $0.75

Finally was able to play this deck IRL against an Arcum Dagsson deck that is super fast (I run the altars in your maybeboard in mine as alternate win cons):

Turn 1: Land, Altar of the Brood

Turn 2: Land, Spincrusher

Turn 3: Land, Phyrexian Ghoul

Turn 4: Land, Diabolic Tutor to get Sol Ring

Turn 5: Land, Sol Ring, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed...mill win since he had a chump blocker

Awesome deck man! If you have a minute, I'd love any advice you have on my decks The Wheels on the Bus, Beyond The Sea or I Put A Spell On You. They are all budget decks though obviously nowhere the budget of yours. Thanks again for the deck!

This deck is amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing.

hosshughes: Awesome. Don't expect them to let you do that again though. I can't cast diabolic tutor without the entire table focusing absolutely all their hate on me as they KNOW I have an infinite combo ready as a result. You need to take it slowly, pretend you are mana screwed / draw only one part of your combo until people tap out then blow them away. In 1v1 you just go gung-ho and drop all pretense.

toxicliam: Thanks!

So, what happens when someone steals Mikaeus? I love the idea for this deck, but how would you deal with someone taking control of Mikaeus? Or if he gets killed a couple of times, how do you win then?

pleasuresaurus says... #6

That's happened to me a few times, my group meta has a couple of players running blue stealing spells like Blatant Thievery. One way to deal with it is to kill it and get it back into the command zone. Another way to do it is to have Homeward Path on standby to get it back. These 2 are what I usually do. You could also Enslave him back.

The whole point of this in its current form deck is just that - going infinite with good guy Mikaeus. It's meant to demonstrate a point. Your opponents will know the deck well enough after a game or 2, so if you intend for this to be a anything more than a one trick pony, you need alternate wincons. One such alternative I use is Mephidross Vampire + Triskelion. Since Basalt Monolith is part of this deck, you could also stick in Rings of Brighthearth and abuse their for infinite mana.

bladedrummer: As pleasuresaurus says, this deck is the general guideline or "starting point" of the deck if you like. When you build a deck with a budget like this, you can't take into account every possible meta, so it's up to you to change it accordingly (Not that I mind helping).

That said, dealing with mind control effects is really easy. All you need to do is win the turn you play him (or at the very least, kill the guy with the mind control effects), as they are almost always sorcery speed. If that isn't enough then do as pleasuresaurus and add Homeward Path. Mephidross Vampire was also an awesome example, too bad it is $3.69 or I'd add it in a heartbeat, I'll have to add it to the "upgrade" section.

Diabolic Servitude has an interesting interaction with your commander - when the reanimated creature dies, you can stack the effects in the way, that the creature returns through undying, and servitude returns to your hand. It's not infinite, but it is quite strong & you can get one as cheap as 8 cents.

Heya, thanks for the replies/suggestions. It just came to mind because I've been wanting to build this deck for a while and I had just played a game against a friend who was playing all sorts of mind control/steal creature type cards. Homeward Path was already in my "to add" list.

Thanks for all the other pointers!

Sleazebag says... #10

JaaJa: That interaction is simply amazing. I kind of just assumed Diabolic Servitude was too expensive when looking through reanimation options, but I've been wrong so many times now I should have known better. It's going straight in!

Cut Dictate of Erebos as it was too expensive ($0.41) for the deck.

Today I found (Or well, someone showed it to me) a card I never knew existed: Jeweled Amulet. Shortening the wall of text, it reads "store one black mana for later". Which happens to be really good in this deck!

January 26, 2015 10:34 p.m.

This Diabolic Servitude looks very useful against trigger-happy opponents (read Marath hehehe), but how exactly does this work? I mean, when the creature dies, don't we choose to either let it be exiled (and trigger Diabolic Servitude) or trigger Undying, and not both?

January 27, 2015 3:36 a.m.

JaaJa says... #12

well, it triggers all of the abilities, but you can decide the order of the triggers on the stack, so exile is put on the stack first, undying second, (the return to hand trigger can go anywhere) then they are resolved in the reverse order, undying resolves, creature returns to the battlefield with the counter, exile has no legal target, therefore "fizzles", Diabolic Servitude returns to your hand.
I kinda accidentally discovered the combo while playing...

What do you think of Trailblazer's Boots. Also, Merciless Executioner is still in the Maybeboard.

January 29, 2015 4:19 p.m.

Sleazebag says... #14

Spencerbot15:

Trailblazer's Boots are good, but if you look at the equipment I already run they all do two out of three things. Evasion, Protection or Haste. Trailblazer only gives evasion (although really good evasion). The other equipment either gives evasion + haste, protection + evasion or haste + protection. It doesn't matter if your creature can't get blocked if it has to wait a full turn to attack, and is fully vulnerable to removal until that next turn. So yeah, good but not good enough is the verdict.

Removed Merciless Executioner from the maybeboard. Thanks for pointing it out.

I have Smokestack and Ob Nixilis, Unshackled. Should I include them? Also, what do you think of Everflowing Chalice?

January 29, 2015 5:17 p.m.

Spencerbot15 says... #16

You also still have Darksteel Ingot in the description when it was removed from the deck.

January 29, 2015 5:21 p.m.

Sleazebag says... #17

Spencerbot15: I wouldn't run Smokestack or Ob Nixilis, Unshackled in this deck. Great cards but this deck focuses on something else. Everflowing Chalice is a card I would run if it was just a few cents cheaper. I'd easily add one if I could!

I'll get to removing the Darksteel Ingot as well.

+1, great deck! ! You have inspired me! I have quite a few commander decks and since I'm addicted to commander, I'm always wanting to make more! I end up spending waaaay too much money or talking myself out of it to prevent crazy over spending of money and/or time. But, thanks to you I've decided to challenge myself to build decks that are extremely inexpensive similar to this one. I was only able to get it to $36 but that is still hundreds less than all of my other commander decks. This is my first attempt: Jarad, Extreme Sub $40 Budget EDH

Also I thought of some cards that may be useful in your deck, Mask of Avacyn is like a crappy Lightning Greaves and Devour in Shadow is a better Vendetta.

January 31, 2015 12:11 a.m.

Sleazebag says... #20

Squirrel_of_War: Mask of Avacyn doesn't give haste/evasion so it doesn't cut it. Devour in Shadow however is awesome. I'll just find a way to run both that and Vendetta.

I just found a very interesting card that lets us cheat all our creatures out for 2 mana. What do you think of Deathrender? Also, Sword of Vengeance sounds good, but is sadly too expensive.

January 31, 2015 8:57 a.m.

Sleazebag says... #22

Spencerbot15: Deathrender is definitely a good card in Mikaeus, and I'd run it in a more goodstuff oriented deck, but most of our creatures are too cheap for this to be broken, and it's still almost $1.

But yeah, a great card in Mikaeus if you run cards like Rune-Scarred Demon, Sheoldred and Kokusho .

Brilliant Deck, m8. Been following this for a few months now. Good to see FRF and Commander 2014 had some impact. I've been looking for a deck for my Ugin's Fate Grim Haruspex and putting this back together is perfect for it. Thanks for all your hard work on this one!!

I just played a four man EDH on cockatrice, and I made Fallen Angel and Flesh-Eater Imp infinite with Pith Driller, killed two of the players, other one conceded. +1

Sleazebag, I was thinking about how you have a bunch of cards you say only use if your playgroup plays x, y, and z. Maybe these should go in the sideboard. Also, the cards for upgrades should go in the aquireboard.
