That'll do, Atarka. That'll do. —June 1, 2022

Welp, I'm finally switching it up. After 7 fun years of Atarka dragon tribal and combat trick shenans, I'll be retiring this deck in its current form. Why you ask? Because Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm, that's why. I can repurpose many/most pieces from this deck while enhancing the funsies double dragon flavour. Moving to Temur brings in a bunch of potent options that I'm excited to explore so watch this space for a complete Double Dragon overhaul!

In the meantime, let's all have a moment of silence for Atarka. She's slammed foes many a time, but she's just too big, dumb and obvious for 2022 tables. RIP Atarka, it's been fun!

I’ll leave the old deck description here for posterity:

Gruul double strike dragon fest? Yep! When Atarka reared her weird, antler-laden head in Fate Reforged I decided it was time to get busy brewin', dragon tribal style. The formula is simple; green ramp + red dragons + a few grand slam surprises sprinkled in = a gigantic Double Dragon knee to the face. I've been tinkering with this unabashed, swing for the fences Timmy deck since 2015 and it's still a fun one to throw down.

Yo! I am pretty new to TappedOut, but was putting in my own personal commander deck (currently private) which I named "Atarka World Render used Dragon Dance"...and I searched for other Atarka decks and found yours!!

Honestly, sick deck, and very similar to mine plus or minus a few personal favorites and such.

What I wanted to comment on though were two new additions from RNA: one which you have already put in the maybe board Rhythm of the Wild which I feel should be an auto include for sure , but also check out Skarrgan Hellkite ! Repeatable fork bolts + Riot could make him a pretty slick inclusion in this deck (they did into mine!).

In that same line, people had said in previous comments that card draw is one thing this deck is a little lite on. While Greater Good can obviously be really powerful, I personally have really enjoyed playing Elemental Bond since it applies to almost all of my creatures...and will probably be slotting in Guardian Project since it literally hits for every single creature.

Just some thoughts, overall awesome stuff and good luck scorching some noobs with those dragons!!

Those are some good suggestions DrJay33, cheers. I'm particularly looking at Elemental Bond because you're right, I'm pretty dang light on card draw in here. I had initially dismissed Skarrgan Hellkite but looking at it again, decent effects and I like the versatility. I may have to test that dragon out.

What do you think of cards like... warstorm surge Fatal frenzy Flame shadow conjuring Frontier siege Zendikar resurgent Somberwald sage Shaman of the forgotten ways

Also, I’m not so sure about into the web of war and crucible of fire. They are good together and it’s a little too expensive in cmc.

Hi MTGPower314, thanks for stopping by + all of the suggestions. Here's my thoughts on all those cards:

  • Warstorm Surge: Great card albeit expensive to cast. That said, I love the effect and will be slotting in the freshly spoiled dragon equivalent: Terror of the Peaks
  • Fatal Frenzy: I like this! A less efficient Berserk, but it's on theme with what this deck tries to do. Definitely up for consideration.
  • Flameshadow Conjuring: I just removed this card from the deck to make way for the superior Molten Echoes. Not that redundancy is a bad thing, but substitutions are getting tricky for me here.
  • Frontier Siege: Really like this card too and ran it in this deck previously. Although I like the options/versatility, I found that I was always using it for ramp (Khans) and ended up subbing it out for more efficient ramp.
  • Somberwald Sage: Decent mana dork but too narrow (creatures only) & too slow. I like my current ramp options and don't see an obvious trade for Somberwald.
  • Shaman of Forgotten Ways: Not running for the same reasons as Somberwald. Although his formidable ability is hilarious, I want my opponent(s) dead long before that 11 mana requirement.

  • I hear what you're saying re. Crucible of Fire & In the Web of War. They're kind of clunky and I may sub them out for more efficient options, good call.

Is this deck still relevant? I LOVE Atarka, but play testing this deck makes it feel a little too clunky. Is there a way to juice it up to contend with the OP commanders today?

    Forkbeard says... #6

Yeah, it's clunky. No getting around that with high CC dragons everywhere. I guess it all depends on what's relevant to you and your meta. If you enjoy playing a non-Tier 1/cEDH theme deck that can still hold it's own in your playgroup, sure it's still relevant. If it gets stomped every time because your friends are busting out turn 2 wins with Thrasios/Tymna or Urza LHA, probably irrelevant. I'm sure I could spruce this up with leaner options, more draw etc, but I still find it fun to play based on it's current state & I do win games with it, believe it or not!

I am not addressing dragon choices in this comment, but I think we should discuss them later

+1 Potential cuts include winmore cards such as....

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker - Most people just remove him in response. How often do you get a real benefit out him. How often do they just leave a dragon for you to copy?

Sarkhan's Triumph - Nice as an instant, but how often do you find yourself tutoring for dragons under 6 cmc? Fierce Empath as a body on the ground might be worth considering.

Gratuitous Violence - BEST case, you cast haste enable with ramp early on. Cast this, then commander. Worst case, you spend a turn to cast it get beat in the face. You play your dragon, they remove it. Cutting high CMC cards like this and the others below with lower the CMC avg of your deck and not making you as reliant upon cards like Purphorous or Sneak attack or massive mana acceleration such as Mana reflection in order to produce continuous threats.

    Fiery Emancipation - See above

Asceticism - I actually like this card a lot, not even sure if should be cut. But it faces a similar problem to the above cards, these are all expensive enchantments.

Reflecting pool - Only gives you mana you already have, better to swap with Bonders' Enclave

Given I only see about 5 sources of card draw, potential inclusions are as follows.....

Harmonize - Simple standard draw, nothing too flashy.

The Great Henge - Draw and ramp that beefy dragons help pay for

    Ancient Tomb - Ramp

Selvala, Heart of the Wilds - Ramp and draw

    Castle Garenbrig - Ramp

Rishkar's Expertise - Very powerful if it goes off. A bit of a gamble and while I usually ignore gambles, the upside is too powerful to ignore

Momentous Fall - Draw and lifegain, saved me many games. Be wary of blue players as sac is additional cost to cast

Life's Legacy - Similar to above but no lifegain and sorcerry speed. Best used when you know your opponents have removal but you still have priority. Its also easier to cast a dragon and then this as opposed to holding mana for momentous (or any card draw spell that matter). Again, beware of blue.

Overall, I really like this deck (and your name). If you were to add some ramp and card draw, I feel the deck would function more smoothly.

Be sure to let us know in your description (and here) your budget per card, your playgroup power level, etc....

Well that's an amazing deck comment, thank you Profet93. I don't disagree with anything you've said here - I've been fine tuning/tweaking this deck a bit lately, and each card you've suggested is definitely getting my wheels spinning and I'd like to swap some stuff to make room for a few of them (I've never seen Bonders' Enclave before and that's totally finding a home here).

My playgroup sits around the 6-7 power level range. Everyone is aware of cEDH and a couple have dabbled here and there, but after a few swift & boring Lab Man style wins they usually 'downgrade' to be more in line with the greater MO of the group. We're not against infinite combos, but we typically don't make it the goal of each match. If I were to classify it, I'd go with 'high powered kitchen table.' As for card budget, we're oldschool players so we've got decent existing collections, thank the dang lort because prices for EDH singles/staples are getting CRAZY (have you looked at reserved list card prices in the last month alone? Insanity). For example, the only thing prohibiting me running The Great Henge in every green deck is it's $50 price tag. I'm not averse to the occasional $20 single here and there, but I only treat myself to a mega money card (anything $50+) once a year or so.

So back to a couple of your comments around cards that are in the deck and my logic as to why I've included them:

  • Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker - honestly just in here for the 'double dragon' theme alongside Feldon of the Third Path . I'm not married to keeping either of them in here and I totally hear what you're saying, but once in a while they do some work and the must sac tokens pair really well with Greater Good . Janky, I know.
  • Gratuitous Violence / Fiery Emancipation - yeah, you're not wrong. They're expensive and aren't exactly subtle. That said, this is very much a 'swing for the fences' deck and centres around haste + expensive Atarka 1-shot value so these cards do merit homes. The good stuff/dragon tribal is thematic smoke & mirrors which can lead to some wins, but the primary win condition = Atarka smacks.

  • Thanks again for taking the time to check out my deck & leave your 2 cents. I know I'm running mostly win-more dragons in here but that's what kitchen table EDH is all about, especially for a Timmy like me. I am definitely curious to read your comments about the dragon choices though so if you're up for it, feel free to drop some opinions here.

Regarding Great Henge - I never realized it was so expensive, time flies and its only been so long!

Regarding double dragons - its nice to have, jank with GG is fun, but its a trade off between fun/jank and efficiency. You have to determine which you value more, I say efficiency is key IMO.

Regarding damage modifiers - Think of it as putting all of your eggs in 1 basket (winmore). If the situation is right to be able to capitalize on those effects, then those effects are dramatically more effective. In contrast, when the situation is not right (you pick up the wrong basket), you're left with little to nothing.

The assumption is that your playgroup will recognize what you're doing and will make it their priority to stop you, because putting all of your eggs in 1 basket really means win or lose

Other potential dragons to consider are as follows...

Thunderbreak Regent - It's cute, if you're beating face and they are at a low life total, he could put in work. MAYBE

Dragon Mage - Given your lack of card draw, this can help, also works as politics. Embraces red's nature

Glorybringer - Dragon with removal, not bad

Chameleon Colossus - "Dragon" that can pump itself and has built in protection

Those are some spicy dragon suggestions Profet93, I'm looking at Glorybringer in particular. Not sure how/why I dismissed him at first, definitely seems like efficient removal + those are some aggressive stats for cost as far as dragons go.

You've given me a bunch to think about and I'm going to be making some changes based on all of this feedback, cheers!

Going to try the following additions + cuts:

  • In: Thought Vessel ; Out: Skyshroud Claim - SC is decent ramp, but this swap makes sense due to minimal forest targets + a general effort to reduce the average CMC. The no max hand size redundancy is just gravy.
  • In: Bonders' Enclave + Castle Garenbrig ; Out: Copperline Gorge + Detection Tower - The probability of Copperline being an ETB tapped land is too great & I've still got Arcane Lighthouse in here if need be. Making room for these 2 superior utility lands feels like a good trade.
  • In: Bala Ged Recovery ; Out: Forest - A bit controversial as this takes my land count down to 35, but I've got a woeful lack of recursion in here and I suspect this will come in handy more often than not. Worst case, I have to use it as an ETB tapped Forest. Best case, a mega threat gets a 2nd shot at life.
  • In: Glorybringer ; Out: Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker - A tough cut to make as good 'ol KJ has been in here since day 1, but as pointed out, he's a big target and not pivotal the game plan. Glorybringer joins the dragon crew and the additional removal option is a welcomed bonus.
  • In: Harmonize + Rishkar's Expertise ; Out: Feldon of the Third Path + Surge of Strength - A few have pointed out the lack of card draw in here and it's a compeltely valid point. These 2 additional options should add value, even if they are a little on the casting cost steep side. Feldon was a cute idea as a recursion engine, but he's also fragile, conditional and Bala Ged Recovery is going to be preferable in most cases anyway. Surge is a sneaky combat trick, but the discard downside was sometimes annoying.

  • Those are my trades for now. I'll need to give it a few plays to see how it feels, but I'm hopeful these card swap choices are fun ones and help to smooth things out a little.

I agree with most swaps except for...

    1. Adding in Thought Vessel over Skyshroud - Skyshroud thins the deck, provides tempo. I agree, the lack of forests is harmful, thats why you should add "dual lands" that are both forests and mountains, which promotes colorfixing as well and thins the deck. Thought vessel is nice to have, lower CMC is great too, but I wouldn't cut skyshroud, because if you were to cut some non basics like reflecting pool and/or mossfire valley. While I think you should cut one of the discussed enchantments, I respect your decision. If not one of the enchantments, then perhaps mirage mirror or better yet Sarkhon Vol. His "act of treason" effect is cool, +1 is meh, and ultimate is not reliable enough, nor impactful enough. Mirage mirror is fun, cool, jank utility. But doesn't immediately improve the deck. Ramp does!

    2. Bala Ged is cool, I personally never been a fan. I think there is better recursion from best to worst IMO.....

Eternal Witness - Simple recursion on a body

Seasons Past - Recursion with a twist that recurs itself

Road of Return - Might be best fit for you, although I like the above 2 better. Limited recursion with utility for reducing cost of expensive commander is something to be considered

Praetor's Counsel - Super recursion, but expensive, great late game, horrible early game unless filled with ramp and even then

Compelling rationale all round Profet93. I'm going to give the changes a try for a bit, but I like the ideas you're throwing down here and will likely revisit this thread if the clunk factor remains. The average CMC actually went up with the recent changes (lol), but I'm hopeful the additional draw adds further gas/options to the mix. We'll see how it goes!

Hello, I really like your decklist. But I've got a question - do you really need Thought Vessel 's effect of 'no maximum hand size'? If not, then I'd suggest replacing it with Talisman of Impulse as it provides colored mana in a pinch :)

Also a bit more flavourfully there's a card called Hunter's Insight , which considering the nature of this deck might be an amazing way to draw tons of cards when one of your dragons is unblocked (especially with power doublers and/or General on board). EDIT: Oh, and there's a quite new dragon Leyline Tyrant if you'd like to add some more of them with decent abilities.

Sorry for the double post but I've just remembered about a land: Cinder Glade . Since you have a 2-color deck this might prove to be very easy to activate it's 'enters untapped' clause.

And what could I change to make room for it? To be honest I don't like Reliquary Tower in this particular deck.
