[Mid] Reaper King: Pumpkin Spice Latte

Commander / EDH Changeling Clone Scarecrow

[Mid]: This deck is designed for mid-power games as defined by PlayEDH--very expensive cards and highly-efficient wincons are deliberately excluded.

Retired: I no longer have this deck sleeved, and I don't plan to update it anytime soon.

Seasonal Decks: Every new season, I make a new deck with a top-down design intended to represent that season. This deck is part of that series.

We should clone each other's pumpkins.

With Halloween coming up, I wanted to try something a little different and, of course, Halloween-themed. When your favorite identity is , though, it takes some doing to get both of those at once. Halloween is basically about creatures, so we're looking at tribal... Horrors? Everyone who plays with me knows my Horror deck already. Zombies? I've done that at least twice before, not counting the crummy old Legacy decks I built when I was new to the game. Vampires? Tempting, but I'd either have to give up counterspells or settle for Evelyn. Scarecrows?

Oh, I'd be the first kid on my block with a Scarecrow deck! It'd finally give me something to do with all those cards I bought back in Shadowmoor, too! This is the second-best idea that I've ever had.

Very quickly, I ran into a glaring problem: Scarecrows are a bad tribe. I don't mean fun bad; I mean bad bad. Forget using all my Shadowmoor cards; this deck is going to be hard-pressed to use Scarecrows that aren't the Reaper King himself. I didn't come all this way just to run a basic-Becky Changeling tribal deck, so I'm going to do my best to make copies of the Reaper King and to take advantage of having five colors. When life gives you pumpkins, you make a pumpkin spice latte.

The gameplan:

  • Gaslight: Five colors means blue, and blue means control.
  • Gatekeep: The Reaper King's ability allows targeted destruction through casting creature spells, which should hopefully be enough to deal with any threats the counterspells didn't catch.
  • Girlboss: By turning off the legend rule and making copies of the Reaper King, we can stack anthem effects and win through an army of pumped-up pumpkins. (The Reaper King isn't exactly a girl boss, but since he's an artifact creature, I'm thinking maybe he isn't exactly a guy boss, either.)

I've got more deck ideas right now than I have a budget for sleeves, so I've unsleeved this deck for the time being. I might bring it back in the future, but I have other things I want to do for now. Until some more cards come out, I think the Reaper King is a little too limited to go up against my friends' decks at mid-power with a reasonable chance of success. I'm leaving this deck up in case someone else is interested and so I can pick up where I left off later if I feel like playing Reaper King again.
