Maybeboard


Another paper deck... this is my current favorite one, since it feels like I'm ten years old playing with toy robots.

It's a very simple concept.

  1. Creature police with thrown artifacts creatures (or artifacts, if absolutely necessary).
  2. Try to hit an opponent's creature with excess damage to trigger Megatron, Destructive Force  's conversion to robot form.
  3. From opponent loss of life, cast larger spells/summons in the postcombat main phase from Megatron, Tyrant  's own conversion trigger, which generates mana.

The deck makes use of Megatron's sacrifice mechanic, either working off of it, or dealing with it.

For funsies, I put in all the Decepticons that matched Megatron's colors (very unfortunate that Soundwave can't be included), and they all have some fun mechanics to really cause some chaos in a multiplayer game (like goad and monarch).

"SUCH HEROIC NONSENSE..."

You can sacrifice almost every nonland permanent in the deck. This is Megatron ordering his troops to attack without mercy, even at the cost of their own lives.

His own Decepticons are the most cost-efficent ones. Summon them for their "More Than Meets the Eye" cost, but sacrifice them for their actual mana value.

"I'LL HAVE YOU DISMANTLED FOR SCRAP, THEN I'LL LAUNCH WHAT'S LEFT OF YOU STRAIGHT INTO THE SUN."

The Brothers' War "Prototype" artifact creatures have their own uses, but can be thrown for massive damage if summoned properly or cheated into play via flicker or recursion.

These creatures have two forms, so you're not stuck holding them in your hand if you need a body on the battlefield. They still do their job even as smaller projectiles.

There are also artifacts that are aggressive for their cost, and can take advantage of recursion and sacrificing as well.

You can make something into an artifact for sacrificing too.

“PEACE THROUGH TYRANNY.”

There is one artifact in the deck that is a catalyst to victory.

This artifact deals 7 damage to a creature when sacrificed by Megatron, and goes back into your hand. If you can deal at least 7 damage to any number of opponents, you can convert him and recast it for free. This is a renewable source of targeted permanent destruction.

Otherwise, there are two other artifacts that serve a similar purpose, and work well if a source of recursion or flickering is present.

With enough mana, there is an instant-kill card.

“DECEPTICONS! TRANSFORM AND RISE UP!”

The key to taking advantage of many of the artifact creatures in the deck (whether it is their mana value for throwing, or their actual functions) is to cheat their true forms into play.

This can be accomplished with battlefield recursion of artifact creatures.

You can unearth an artifact as a last resort.

You can make something into an artifact for recursion or sacrificing, as needed.

In addition, there's an artifact creature from a land as a sacrifice target, as well as some artifact lands.

Alternatively, flickering works on the Decepticons, the Prototypes, and the destroyers (Chaos Defiler, Meteor Golem) in the deck, including Megatron.

"POWER FLOWS TO THE ONE WHO KNOWS HOW. DESIRE ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH."

Of course, you need ways to accelerate to your win condition, which in this case, is just a good ol' fashioned beatdown by keeping the coast clear of blockers.

Artifacts can be tutored in a few ways.

I like to get Scarecrone with Goblin Engineer

You can make something into an artifact for sacrificing as well.

You can copy creatures if you need something to sacrifice.

There's also an artifact creature from a land as a sacrifice target, and some artifact lands.

I only put one generic tutor in the deck in case of emergencies.

There's also one card that can be used for graveyard-hand shenanigans.

"IT'S A PITY YOU AUTOBOTS DIE SO EASILY, OR I MIGHT HAVE A SENSE OF SATISFACTION NOW."

No deck can go without spot and mass removal, even if Megatron can semi-reliably destroy the opponent(s) creatures. Some cards actually create weenies for the opponent, giving additional easy-kill targets for Megatron to ensure conversion triggers.

Spot removal can be found on a number of cards.

You can copy creatures with battlefield triggers.

This card can also be used for flickering or exerted for defense if absolutely necessary.

You can also put Deathtouch onto a creature.

While these aren't total board wipes, they work through hexproof and shroud for all of an opponent's creatures.

There's also a way to make sure the opponent doesn't use recursion of their own graveyard against you.

This isn't removal, but it does remove first strike (or swampwalk) from a creature.

This also isn't removal, but it works the same way. You can take control of an opponent's creature to use or sacrifice.

You can then make that stolen something into an artifact for Megatron to sacrifice, or to specifically target with Raze the Effigy.

"I'LL CRUSH YOU WITH MY BARE HANDS!"

Preferably, it'd be better if Megatron didn't risk getting himself killed while attacking.

Thus, sources of evasion can be found in the deck.

The Ebony Fly is expensive to use, but it doubles as a mana source. Meanwhile, the Zephyr Boots get unequipped on turns where Megatron is in Vehicle form, so has to be re-equipped to be used. It's included thanks to its looting ability and cheap cost.

"I WILL WIN BY ANY MEANS! AT ANY COST!"

Outside of evasion and recursion, there are some sources of actual protection.

These cards are used in a preventative manner.

You can make something into an artifact to take advantage of any protection effects.

As a bonus (or a hit; it's a double-edged sword), if it ever happens, there are several golems that can profit from Precursor Golem's static effect as a target for Raze the Effigy.

"I DO THIS ONLY FOR THE BENEFIT OF MY DECEPTICONS."

This is a casual deck, so it doesn't have a draw engine that runs like all those made-for-commander cards out there, or those uber-efficient commanders that really aren't to my taste.

Still, there's a need to have some card advantage or cycling here or there.

"EVERYTHING I TOUCH IS FOOD FOR MY HUNGER. MY HUNGER FOR POWER!"

Finally, a three-color deck without green means you need some good mana sources and fixing.

I'm of the opinion that 37 lands is perfect, after 20 years of playing EDH. Keep in mind, this is a number for non-efficient generals, not for cEDH or super-efficient Commanders designed for the format.

Though there's a distinct lack of dual or most of the fetch lands, the deck still works well enough and stays within a more palatable budget.

Mana rocks/dorks.

Ramp.

Acceleration.

Tokens can be used for Culling the Weak.

Alternate cost.

Fixing.
