Marisi1 - President Goad

Commander / EDH RGW (Naya)

zamiero

Marisi, Breaker of the Coil and Goad. I imagine a Marisi deck can take several avenues:

  • Attack with smaller creatures that have low CMC and focus on utility so you can Goad early and often. This requires deck slots for evasion enchantments.
  • Attack with larger, quality creatures that don't need help evading the opponent's blockers. This requires less deck slots.
  • Play "Group Slug" to give one opponent many creatures, then attack with unblockable Marisi. Maybe that will force one player into an Archenemy situation? Will eventually backfire.
  • Cast things instant-speed to take advantage of the opponents being locked out of the Combat Step. Use of Instants, cards with Flash, and Sunforger. Probably supplemented with Grand Abolisher, Conqueror's Flail, and Dragonlord Dromoka
  • Play a "goodstuff" deck and just don't worry about opponents playing removal or combat tricks when attacking.
  • Cat Tribal
  • Warrior Tribal

This was originally a politically-inspired deck given the intensity of the American presidential election 2020. It's easy to say anything and get people riled up. I dropped that theme as soon as the gimmick wore off (before I even designed the deck). I previously made a deck for a different presidential candidate, but that deck wasn't worth posting to TappedOut. The deck is now visually associated with the popular series "Tiger King", however that happened. Should be funny.

Now some rules notes in case I forget:

701.38. Goad

701.38a Certain spells and abilities can goad a creature. Until the next turn of the controller of that spell or ability, that creature attacks each combat if able and attacks a player other than that player if able.
701.38b A static ability may state that a creature “is goaded.” That creature attacks each combat if able and attacks a player other than the controller of the permanent with that static ability if able.
701.38c Once a player has goaded a creature, the same player goading it again has no effect. It doesn’t create additional combat requirements.

MARISI RULING FROM GATHERER: 8/23/2019 Creatures that enter the battlefield after Marisi’s second ability resolves won’t be goaded.
MARISI RULING FROM GATHERER: 8/23/2019 The goaded creatures remain goaded even if Marisi leaves the battlefield before your next turn.
MARISI SUMMARY FROM GATHERER: There are many ways that GOAD can backfire. If I'm the last player left (it's one-on-one), the Goaded creatures attack me. Requiring a cost to attack the player does not force the Goaded creature to attack that player.

718. The Monarch

718.1. The monarch is a designation a player can have. There is no monarch in a game until an effect instructs a player to become the monarch.
718.2. There are two inherent triggered abilities associated with being the monarch. These triggered abilities have no source and are controlled by the player who was the monarch at the time the abilities triggered. This is an exception to rule 113.8. The full texts of these abilities are “At the beginning of the monarch’s end step, that player draws a card” and “Whenever a creature deals combat damage to the monarch, its controller becomes the monarch.”
718.3. Only one player can be the monarch at a time. As a player becomes the monarch, the current monarch ceases to be the monarch.
718.4. If the monarch leaves the game, the active player becomes the monarch at the same time as that player leaves the game. If the active player is leaving the game or if there is no active player, the next player in turn order becomes the monarch. If no player still in the game can become the monarch, the game continues with no monarch.
