Maybeboard

This is a 100% Marath build designed for maximum performance in a competitive meta. It relies on resource disruption and compact, easily assembled, highly efficient combos to win. More information coming soon.

This build is quite similar to the popular Modern deck 'Kiki Chord' in some ways. Both its color, strategy, and primary win condition are the same. The deck is first and foremost a midrange build, though it incorporates many stax and combo elements in it. It's main goal in the early game is to ramp into a sizable board state while slowing opponents with efficient hate bears and lock pieces like Containment Priest and Blood Moon. The package is wide enough to slow or outright halt a variety of opposing strategies. After that, it's a matter of assembling one of two combos. The first is the classic Splinter Twin/Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Village Bell-Ringer or a similar creature. The second commonly used combo is Linvala, Keeper of Silence/Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite + Living Plane. This combo turns off opponent's lands or outright destroys them, depending on which creature is used. Both have numerous methods for assemblage. Fauna Shaman, Survival of the Fittest, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard, Imperial Recruiter, Birthing Pod, Tooth and Nail, and Defense of the Heart can all single-handedly assemble Kiki-bellringer or a similar infinite pair in a matter of a few turns.

If neither of the aforementioned combos can be assembled, traditional creature beats become the main line of victory. Often this line is accelerated, or outright negated, by Shaman of Forgotten Ways. The deck has little trouble reaching 11 mana in the late game, making him a surprisingly relevant win condition.

Marath provides useful utility to the deck's strategy. His veritable toolbox of abilities makes him a powerful asset in this highly reactive deck. His ability to spawn tokens creatures valuable fodder for blocking, sacking to Skullclamp and Birthing Pod, and creating massive ramp with Gaea's Cradle and Cryptolith Rite.

His damage ability can be utilized to kill off pesky enemy commanders and utility creatures. In addition, it combos quite well with Living Plane. It allows targeted land destruction for 1 mana; a useful tool for blowing up enemy Cradles and other powerful utility lands. Finally, it allows him to kill his own creatures when needed. Academy Rector is a powerful tutor for both of the deck's primary winning combos. Marath provides a reliable method for killing him as needed, as well as way to remove the deck's own Gaddock Teeg or other situational hate bears at a moment's notice.

His ability to place counters on creatures is rarely utilized, but on occasion it's useful for making favorable combat trades when opponents are not paying attention.
