Strixhaven update & thanks for all the support! —April 3, 2021

I don’t think I’ve made before that has gotten so many upvotes in such a short time frame. We’re now the top ranking Malcolm deck, as well as the top ranking Akiri Lineslinger deck! Thanks everyone for showing your support.

Strixhaven has been fully spoiled and there are a few interesting treasure-related ones. However, I don’t think I will be adding any of them. Here’s why:

  • Galazeth Prismari: For this deck I think this card is a trap. It does say “treasure” on it, but there are a lot of other creatures that give 1 treasure when they ETB and we don’t run them either. The main ability of Galazet might recall the one from Urza, Lord High Artificer, but I’d say it’s a way worse Inspiring Statuary here. Galazet hits about 20 cards in this deck, while the Statuary hits about 55. And I’m not so convinced the deck needs another such treasure payoff…
  • Culmination of Studies: I find it hard to gauge this card just by reading it. I might test it to see what it does for the deck, but I’m not terribly excited yet...
  • Prismari Command: a very good card! However, the treasure clause is probably the least interesting option. I’ll be adding it to another deck where it feels more at home.
  • Storm-Kiln Artist: this one might be the most tempting of the bunch, but even this one doesn’t convince me right away. I will test it to see if I like it first.

April 7 update: I spoke too soon ;). Commander 2021 had an ace in the hole: Monologue Tax. I will be adding this in stead of Breeches, Brazen Plunderer. I've also made some other tweaks:

  • IN Martyr's Bond OUT All That Glitters: I figured I'd rather test Martyr's Bond. All that glitters is a great flavor card, but we already have it in the command zone. While Martyr's bond in this deck is a recurring version of Vandalblast.
  • IN Idol of Oblivion OUT Rest in Peace: I added rest in peace because I thought I had no graveyard hate ;). But both Commit / Memory and Echo of Eons cleanse all graveyards. Adding the Idol to test it.
  • IN Treasure Map  Flip OUT Sword of the Animist: I can use the sword in another deck, and I'd like to try out the treasure map again as it a rampy card that's closer to what I want to do with this deck.
  • IN Commander's Insight OUT Rhystic Study: similar to treasure map, this card has more synergy in the deck and a refreshing departure from the staple Rhystic Study. Going to test it for a while.

This deck would be better with more syllables in the Deck Name. The slant rhyme is falling flat without those (syllables).

It needs to be: duh-duh da-duh Siren, duh-duh da-duh Flyin.

There ya go.

Thanks, milohenry13 I had not yet noticed that potential,

It’s going to be hard though pulling that off while still referring to the commander, the pirate theme (flying dutchman), the aim of the deck (being frugal with treasure), and the colors of the deck (America isn’t the only country with a WUR-colored flag). If you have a suggestion though, I’m all ears ;).

Im so absolutely on board with this, great deck! In my 3 years of playing pirates I have never been able to make Storm the Vault  Flip work. How has it been performing for you? To me it just never felt worth it, not before nor after flipping.

Hey NoopyNolife. Thanks for the upvote!

I haven't had Storm the Vault  Flip in play that often in real games, but in play-testing I really like it so far. With the emphasis on treasure, and the strategy not to spend them, I have little issues with getting it to flip. Then, combined with some of the mana sinks and blue instant spells there is usually a good way to spend that mana and one of the pay-offs for not spending those treasures.

What are your experiences with it? What has caused you to be doubtful about it?

Yes I can see the flip being very good with X spells and such. My decks have always focused on getting many pirates through (for example to trigger Admiral Beckett Brass or Coastal Piracy , and getting one treasure for all the attacking creatures just was never really worth the 4 mana investment, there have always been better cards to play in my experience.

That being said, since malcolm cares about hitting as many players as possible, I think Storm the Vault becomes a lot stronger. Coming to think of it, I don't think I ever registered that it could trigger of multiple opponents. I think it should be right at home in your deck :)

Yeah, it's a tricky wording, similar to Akiri, Fearless Voyager for example. Easy to misread. I can imagine when pirates are the primary focus, it's not worth it. I guess this list is more a treasure tribal deck than a pirate tribal one ;).

So, I'm actually working on a high-powered combo deck similar to this, although I paired Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator with Vial Smasher the Fierce , for a few reasons; Curiosity has a target in the command zone, making Vial Smasher a pirate can cause him to make treasure, and adding black can help me find my combo pieces.

I wanted to play combos from the beginning cuz I'm a Johnny at heart. Instead of using Arcane Adaptation (cuz I forgot about it) and Maskwood Nexus (the only copy I own is in another deck) I instead used Runed Stalactite and Captain's Hook . Will be switching over eventually, and adding black gives me access to not only Mayhem Devil as another combo piece, but there are a slew of add-black pirates that help disrupt the field.

Sounds like a nice direction thenewlollipopjam! Black certainly has a lot to offer. Let me know once you have a version up. Would like to have a look at it :).

I went for white because I really wanted access to Smothering Tithe and Anointed Procession . In Jeskai you could also make this deck more high-powered. For example through Intuition and Sevinne's Reclamation you can get any 2 combo pieces you want. I kept the deck a bit janky on purpose to not scare my playgroup too much (it's already a bit too competitive I'm afraid ;)...).

Thanks for dropping by!
