Maelstrom Wanderer - Landfall Armies

Commander / EDH Cascade Landfall RUG (Temur) Tokens

MrGonzo

Starting as always with a description of my playgroup, I would call it the highest tier of casual EDH, while still below CEDH. Combo and fast mana are common, with generals such as Animar, Soul of Elements , Zur the Enchanter , and Azusa, Lost but Seeking being some of the most dangerous. Games can finish turn 4 or 5 and rarely make it past turn 10.

This is definitely not at the top end of the power level, but it's designed to indulge the inner Timmy while still being competitive. I want armies that do so much damage a calculator is required to work it out, and I want it in the time frames outlined above. And the deck I think delivers - albeit with the inconsistency inherent in Cascade.

This is a landfall matters deck that uses cards like Omnath, Locus of Rage , Avenger of Zendikar and Scute Swarm to generate huge armies with cards such as Azusa, Lost but Seeking to get extra land drops and Ancient Greenwarden for double triggers and extra use out of fetchlands. Then Pathbreaker Ibex or Moraug, Fury of Akoum can scale up the damage even further. Scute Swarm is particularly fun in this deck, it is perfectly possible to put 1000s into play in one turn, then swing as they all have haste from Maelstrom Wanderer .

Probably the most questionable cards are the semi-interactive cards. This is a fairly all-in deck, and I wonder if cards like Balefire Dragon and Hellkite Tyrant should be cut. That said, they offer substantial power and give the deck some flexibility against troublesome strategies for a few slots. Spelljack as the only counterspell is more there as it gives a free cascade by letting you recast Maelstrom Wanderer for free, and is not really intended to interact with opponents.

The manabase has been one of the biggest deckbuilding challenges I've had in a while and I am not convinced it's right. Balancing the number of basic and otherwise fetchable lands against the number of fetchlands needed and utility lands is a delicate job, and it may be correct to cut the Rootbound Crag Cycle for the remaining two fetchlands and another basic land. I am also not entirely convinced 46 is the right number, but in goldfishing it seems to balance the need to hit land drops (and accelerate them with Exploration and actions spells.

This deck is mad, and a lot of fun. Would be eager to hear any suggestions if people have them.
