New Commander variant idea:

Boss Battle

  1. Pick two commanders in the same colors that have similar, yet different abilities such as Judith, the Scourge Diva and Lyzolda, the Blood Witch or Rhys the Redeemed and Trostani, Selesnya's Voice .

  2. A deck is 100 to 120 non-land cards that complement or directly synergize with the commanders.

  3. Each player has 10 lands in their command zone, alongside their commander. Once per turn, a player can play one of these lands as if it were in their hand. I like to do at least two of each basic in my commanders' colors and the remainder in taplands that produce the appropriate colors.

  4. No land destruction, it defeats the purpose of perfect mana access. Players may only have 10 mana, but that covers every spell in the game except for about two dozen and several of those have cost reduction abilities.

  5. Players have 30 life and no commander damage clause.

  6. Randomly decide who plays first and that player gets first pick of their commander.

  7. Take the card pool and split it into two decks.

  8. Each player draws 4 cards and there are no mulligans because you always have enough mana.

  9. The commander tax can never increase the total mana you pay for your commander beyond 10 since this is the maximum amount of lands you can have.

  10. Kill each other in the flashiest way possible.

I have played several games with friends and they love it. I introduced it to an opponent at my FLGS during FNM and he had a blast. Because everything is contained to one larger deck box, it's easy to pick up and play with anyone. It's good for new players because it takes the work out of mulligans and removes mana screw/mana flood. It is also pretty high variance because you have two somewhat different commanders, and 100 to 120 nonland cards compared to the 36 in Modern and 64 in regular EDH. This lets you see interactions that would have never naturally occurred.

This Judith vs Lyzolda Boss Battle is awesome because there are so many little synergies that pop up, like using a Wrangle to take a creature, giving it deathtouch with Onyx Mage and then shooting it into another creature with Mortarpod for a double-kill.

Give the format a try, I guarantee you'll have a fun, if extremely janky, time.
